Pay-offs, take-ups & winding systems

Pay-offs for aluminium wire rod

Full range of take-ups and pay-offs

Queins, Germany, is a leading manufacturer of heavy duty pay-offs and take-ups. Queins’ product range covers column-type, cantilever-type, bridge-type, self-traversing portal-type, heavy rotating take-ups and pay- offs for power and telecommunication cables, as well as for several steel wire ropes. Also offered are fork type rotating take-ups for direct pull applications. Standard sizes for take-ups and pay-offs are manufactured in a range from 3 to 300 tons of drum weight and for reel flange diameters between 1,600mm (63") and 5,000mm (197").

Niehoff has developed a large range of pay-offs for different kinds of wires and cables. Because aluminium coils are wound layer-by-layer, a different pay-off technique than copper is required.

Increased safety and cut in costs Boxy, in co-operation with one of its customers, contributed to increased automation of a new machine by supplying steel reels and lifting beams especially developed for that project. Reels are equipped with a system that automatically clamps the wire end, while lifting units allow reels to be automatically handled – they can clamp and release the reel without any operator intervention.

Niehoff offers two pay-off systems for aluminium rod with diameters of 9.52mm. Using the AAH 1800 type pay-off, the coils are placed in a chart with horizontal axis and rod is paid out from the inside of the coil. As the end of one coil is welded to the beginning of the next one, the rod can be be processed continuously without stopping the drawing line. The other pay-off has the designation ATV1800. It consists of a rotating table on which the coil is placed. The wire is paid off tangentially. The process is not continuous so the rod breakdown machine must be stopped at coil changeover. Thanks to that system, reel removal from the machine and its transport inside the plant are speeded up, resulting in increased safety and reduced labour costs.
