The September issue
2018
6-8 June Guangzhou (Guangzhou, China) International exhibition www.julang.com.cn
Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. This issue we have a feature on tube welding technology and an extended article by Erika Hedblom from Sandvik on the advantages of using integrated sensors in stainless steel tube production, which you can read on page 61. This issue will be distributed at Tube China 2018 in Shanghai and also at EuroBLECH, which is being held in Hanover, Germany. If you are at either of these trade shows do come and say hello as members of our team will be manning stands at both events promoting the magazine – and of course your tube-related products within its pages. This summer oil prices have reached a two-year high, which has been good news for the tube industry, with prices rising to $77 per barrel. Steel tube production in the US, for example, has risen 34 per cent due to political trade barriers and the growth of shale gas exploration. Similar figures for growth have been reported in Europe for makers of welded tubes, according to an article by VOSCO GmbH looking at the global pipe and tube market. The article, published in ITAtubeJournal, suggests there has been a shift in pipe and tube production capacity back to Europe and the US, and away from China, partly due to a move to the manufacture of products with higher technical requirements and investment in advanced technology, and partly due to trade barriers in the US. In the next issue of Tube Products INTERNATIONAL we have features on valves, fittings, flanges and connectors and tube inspection and testing technology. The magazine will be distributed at FABTECH 2018 in Atlanta, USA, Tube India 2018, which is taking place in Mumbai, India, and Valve World 2018 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Bystronic acquires tube machining equipment manufacturer
In the months since the partnership agreement was instigated, positive feedback from customers has shown that there is a strong demand in many markets for even closer collaboration between the companies. For the time being, TTM Laser will continue as a brand and will be known as a member of Bystronic. Fiorenzo Castellini, the current CEO of TTM Laser, will retire and hand over responsibility to the remaining management team. Bystronic CEO Alex Waser commented, “With the fusion of Bystronic and TTM Laser, our customers are gaining access to a unique range of technologies and innovations for their sheet metal processing requirements from a single source. TTM Laser’s know-how and technology portfolio ideally comple- ment Bystronic’s existing products with world-class systems for tube and profile processing. The goals of the takeover are to jointly push forward innovative, versatile manufacturing solutions and to provide an enhanced range of services.”
The takeover will enhance Bystronic’s existing range of technologies with the addition of 2D and 3D laser systems for cutting profiles and tubes from 12 to 815mm in diameter, as well as with equipment for welding large-format metal sheets. Active in the market since 2001, TTM Laser achieved a turnover of approximately €14mn in 2017.
Swiss sheet metal equipment manu- facturer Bystronic, which produces fibre laser cutting machines, automation solutions and press brakes for processing flat material, announced at the beginning of April that it is to take over TTM Laser SpA, an Italian manufacturer of laser-based tube and profile cutting machines, following the strategic partnership jointly agreed by the two companies last November.
Bystronic is taking over TTM Laser, opening up a wider range of technologies and innovations in sheet metal processing

Welding consumables selected for crossing
steel grades selected, but also suit the welding environment, including weather conditions. After welding trials to establish the ‘best fit’ for the project, Mr Ishibashi and FCBC welding engineer Dave Godfrey of Godfrey Welding Engineering settled on four ESAB welding consumables for the task. For most welded joints on the Queensferry Crossing bridge decking, a single flux-cored wire was specified, namely ESAB OK Tubrod 15.14 (T46 2 P C 1 H5). This versatile wire is suitable for all-positional welding on the S355 grade structural steel used in this exposed application. OK Tubrod 15.14 is universally approved to grade 3 by all major authorities. Welding procedures were undertaken in the vertical and horizontal positions. Impact testing at -20°C resulted in values well in excess of those required by the specification. In some areas where high-tensile S460 grade structural steel was employed, ESAB Filarc PZ6138 (T50 6 1Ni P M H5) was used. This wire, which is commonly specified in the offshore sector, contains 0.9%Ni to ensure reliable Charpy impact properties down to -60°C and good CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) performance to -10°C. Filarc PZ6138 also exhibits a smooth, stable arc with virtually no spatter. ESAB Group (UK) Ltd – UK

scheme has cost approximately £1.35bn and is Scotland’s largest transport infrastructure project in a generation. Built to motorway standards, the bridge has two lanes and a hard shoulder running in each direction, with the roadway supported by three composite steel/concrete towers. To cover all required disciplines for the project, a multinational consortium of four main contractors was required: Hochtief, Germany; Dragados, Spain; Morrison Construction, UK; and American Bridge International, USA. American Bridge was charged with overseeing the production and installation of 121 road sections. This task was coordinated by American Bridge International senior engineer Joshua Ishibashi, who supervised production of the road sections in China, through to final site assembly at Queensferry. A particular challenge for the American Bridge engineers was to find a combination of welding processes and consumables that would not only meet the mechanical properties of the

Polypipe supplies water management components to new children’s hospital
Polypipe, a UK manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management solutions, has supplied more than 300,000 Permavoid and Polystorm-R components for water attenuation systems at the new £150mn Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh. Working with primary contractor Multiplex, Polypipe has supplied 11 shallow attenuation tanks that will hold a combined volume of up to 2,020m 3 , installed at key points across the site. The tanks have been installed under parking bays and beneath crucial entrances, including the hospital’s Accident and Emergency departments, by civil engineer and groundwork specialist Crummock. An intelligent sub-base replacement design was needed to store the appropriate level of water, above the high water table, that gathers on the site during heavy rainfall. Following discussions with Polypipe’s technical team, the Permavoid geocellular system was chosen by the project consultant engineer as the primary engineered solution. Polypipe also supplied the additional attenuation tank using components from its Polystorm range, which included Polystorm R, Polystorm Inspect and Polystorm Access. The Permavoid tanks are being used beneath permeable and non-permeable paving, wrapped in geomembrane to make the tanks watertight for
attenuation. Permatex, a polypropylene geotextile, has been installed between the Permavoid layers to ensure passive water infiltration into the tanks. The strength of Polypipe geocellular solutions makes them suitable for heavily trafficked areas, and the 95 per cent void fill ratio of the Permavoid system enhances ground attenuation by storing excess water below ground level, mitigating the risk of localised flooding. Ten of the tanks installed used Permavoid 150mm, to hold a volume of up to 1780m 3 , with one tank using a combination of Polystorm-R with Polystorm Access, and Polystorm Inspect, supplying a further 240m 3 volume tank. With adjoining hospital departments needing to remain open and accessible
during construction, a carefully coordinated delivery schedule for the products on site needed to be devised between Polypipe, the selected merchant, PDM, and the on-site project managers, to minimise disruption to patients and medical staff. PDM worked with Crummock to manage the order and delivery of all components from Polypipe to the site, demonstrating the benefits of a collaborative approach across the project. Jonathon Mays, procurement manager at Multiplex, said, “Polypipe was a clear choice for this project as its technical experts were able to assess on-site requirements, and define the right products and quantities needed. By working with merchant partner PDM, the easy-to-install Permavoid and Polystorm-R systems could be delivered to site on a timely basis and quickly put into position. Using a geocellular system also reduced the amount of land that needed to be excavated from the site.” Rosie Cheetham, marketing manager at Polypipe Civils, added, “There were a number of interesting challenges on this project, including the contractor’s need to keep the site open to hospital traffic, and the high water table on-site posing a technical problem to solve. The on-site teams were able to coordinate deliveries to meet strict installation schedules.” Polypipe – UK www.polypipe.com

Using gas grid to store excess electricity According to a new report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), government and industry should boost investment in technology to promote the use of hydrogen as a way of storing energy. One of the barriers to increasing renewable capacity in the UK is the inability to store excess electricity – if, for example, it is very windy but demand levels are low. The proposed technology would allow the gas grid to be used to store excess electricity, in the form of hydrogen, and support an expansion of renewable power in the UK. The recommendation is made in the report ‘Energy from Gas: Taking a Whole System Approach’, which outlines key ways that gas could be used to make the UK energy system greener, cheaper and more efficient.
Power-to-gas technology uses excess electricity on the National Grid – from either high levels of renewable generation or low demand – to create hydrogen through electrolysis. This can be used locally or injected into the gas grid at a low hydrogen concentration. Apart from producing ‘green’ gas, it can also be used to balance the electricity grid. The UK gas grid has the potential to store excess electricity in the form of hydrogen for a greater amount of time than some other forms of energy storage, such as batteries. The report makes three recommenda- tions for how power-to-gas technology could be used to transform the UK energy system: 1. UK Government must commit to creating an industrial forum that brings together the nuclear, renewable power and gas sectors to promote the generation and storage of hydrogen for use across the UK energy system in heat, transport, power generation and heavy industry. Investment now in the future hydrogen economy will begin to encourage further innovation. 2. UK Government must work with the gas industry to promote the use of up to 20 per cent hydrogen in the gas distribution network, including changes in pipes and materials by 2023. Fund- ing programmes and demonstration sites are crucial to decarbonising gas. Government has the power to finance research, development and demonstra- tion and support deployment through programmes such as Innovate UK, as well as bespoke programmes designed to deliver future UK infrastructure. 3. UK Government should commission a comprehensive comparative study of the long-term sustainability of materials used to create lithium ion EV batteries versus power-to-gas/gas systems and fuel cells, to identify appropriate technology and life cycle approach. By understanding this more clearly, UK Government can make evidence-based investment decisions that meet the requirements of sustainable development in the transport and heat sectors.
