Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. In this issue we have a feature on fittings, valves, flanges & connectors and an extended article from EWM AG in Germany looking at technology that can be used while degaussing pipelines. It offers a fascinating insight into the latest techniques. Following the recent attacks against the oil fields in Saudi Arabia there has been a lot of speculation about dramatic rises in the oil price. Full repairs to the facilities are expected to take months to complete as specialist equipment is required to be custom made to carry out the repairs. However, according to the Financial Times in the UK there has been a much faster return to full production than expected, which has calmed the oil markets. Oil prices have become more stable, faster than expected, which is great news for the tube industry in the region as well as other related industries in such an important worldwide market. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region in general have become huge export markets for countries such as the USA, so a return to stability is very important. Let’s hope that this is just an isolated incident and that the area can continue to thrive. Next issue we have features on OCTG, gas & pipeline products, tube welding technology, and tube inspection & testing. The January issue will also have a Tube Düsseldorf preview, so if you would like to give readers and those attending Tube Düsseldorf 2020 an advance look at what you will be exhibiting at the show – and the location of your stand – then please submit your editorial as soon as possible. It is, of course, not long until Tube Düsseldorf happens and we will be starting to plan this issue of the magazine soon, so please do start thinking about your editorial submissions and marketing plans in order to guarantee inclusion in this important issue, which will help showcase your products to all of the most important buyers and decision makers in the tube and pipe industry.

50 years of fusion innovation McElroy, a 65-year-old company with small beginnings as a contract job shop, is marking its 50 th year as a manufacturer of thermoplastic pipe fusion machines. key functions. “I think what they really have delivered is they have made our one machine/one operator concept of butt fusion more effective,” said Chip McElroy.

“If you look at the industries that have already embraced this technology, they believe in it,” said Chip McElroy, president of McElroy. “Those people are already believers and are challenging us to make our equipment more efficient, even easier to operate and to create the tools that let pipeline owners know joints were done per specification.” McElroy found its niche in the thermoplastics world in 1969, when Phillips Driscopipe asked company founder Art McElroy to design a 2" prototype machine for its high-density polyethylene (PE) pipe product. This led to the 4" Hand Pump, and more sizes developed rapidly after that, along with stationary and wheeled models and eventually tracked vehicles. Art McElroy accurately predicted a sustainable future in fusion and adopted a philosophy to stay ahead of the game by investing in engineering and product development. The company’s equipment was relied on heavily in the construction of natural gas distribution systems, and today thermoplastics are gaining ground in nearly every industry, as heat-fused, leak-free joints are accepted as a reliable piping solution. McElroy sold direct initially. Its sales team gave demonstrations, trained customers, rented machines, sold parts and made repairs. In 1981, Art McElroy created McElroy University, a formal training facility to ensure that operators and inspectors develop best fusion practices. The company also moved towards a distribution network in 1984 to sell equipment on a broader scale. In the 1990s, McElroy was encouraged by the mining industry to create a self-propelled fusion machine. The prototype was a self-contained, track- mounted 500mm fusion machine. That line of equipment is now known as the TracStar ® , and has become the flagship of McElroy’s machine lines. The TracStar is available in a full range of sizes from 28" to 48" OD. Its benefits include mobility and hydraulic assistance on

Sparked by the increasing use of pipe up to 2,000mm, McElroy set out on a completely new design to meet the challenge. The Talon 2000 is a self- propelled machine with a jaw design that self-loads pipe from the ground, positions it to be fused and moves from joint to joint down the pipeline. The new method for handling pipe known as pipelining provides a safer, more efficient way to fuse large pipe. After spending the majority of time in outdoor, underground construction,

McElroy took its products inside in 2014 with equipment to fuse polypropylene pipe for plumbing and mechanical systems. By 2018, the company offered socket tools as small as 16mm and butt fusion machines up to 630mm for polypropylene pipe, and believes its polypropylene tools are a key part of the future. 75 th anniversary of D-Day and the first subsea flowline

Martin Jones, Magma Global CEO, said, “Today we commemorate the 75 th anniversary of D-Day, along with our local community, and pay respect to all those who lost their lives in the conflict. We pay particular tribute to the engineers for whom we have the greatest empathy and appreciation; the pioneering team behind the first subsea oil pipe. “We feel a real affinity with the PLUTO project, a subsea pipe linking our home county of Hampshire to Normandy in France – geographies that are again united in flexible subsea engineering through our work with TechnipFMC’s engineering team in Le Trait in Normandy. PLUTO was a huge feat of military engineering and provided fuel to facilitate the movement of front- line troops. Furthermore, it marked the beginning of a new industry delivering fuel around the world and from subsea reserves. This 75 th anniversary is

Magma Global paid tribute to the pioneers of the first spooled subsea pipe deployment as part of the commemorations of the 75 th anniversary of D-Day, which took place in June in the company’s home city of Portsmouth, UK. The pioneer spirit demonstrated by the military engineers who deployed ‘PLUTO’ under the English Channel resonates with today’s oil and gas industry as it tackles exploration and production in the harshest environments on the planet. During World War II, PLUTO (Pipe Line Under The Ocean) delivered 5mn barrels of fuel to front line troops between D-Day on 6 June 1944 and VE Day on 8 May 1945. It was considered one of history’s greatest feats of military engineering and is recognised for its contribution to the resolution of the conflict.

Tube connection system certified for gas and hydrogen applications

Absolute micro-tightness against the hydrogen medium: this is the confirmation given by TÜV Rheinland to the Voss Lok 40 tube connection system from Voss Fluid. This is also confirmed by recent certifications by the DVGW (German Association for Gas and Water) and the international shipbuilding classification society DNV-GL. With the TÜV Rheinland certification, Voss Lok 40 has received certificates from the most important national and international certification companies. The certification in the field of hydrogen was particularly notable for the Voss Fluid developers. Hydrogen is considered an extremely sensitive hazardous substance due to its high flammability, and therefore the demands placed on

Voss Lok 40 are correspondingly high. The purely metal- sealing tube connection system is based on the principle of tube forming established in hydraulics, and represents an alternative to clamping ring systems due to its high micro-tightness. It reliably seals hydrogen applications up to 70 MPa (700 bar) operating pressure and temperatures from -40°C to +120°C. The TÜV Rheinland inspectors subjected the product to a series of demanding tests in accordance with EC 79. In addition, the tube forming solution meets the tightness requirements of the European regulation ECE R110. It is therefore approved for special components used in motor vehicles with CNG drive. The DVGW also tested vibration, tensile strength and pressure pulse strength. Thanks to certification in the hydrogen sector, Voss Lok 40 is also suited to use in alternative drive systems. The international shipbuilding classification society DNV-GL carried out a repeat assembly, as well as tests for tightness, vacuum, pull-out test, combined pressure pulsation and vibration. Voss Lok 40 passed all tests and showed maximum leakage reliability and pressure resistance. The certifications apply to the operation of high-pressure and low-pressure tube systems on seagoing vessels. Voss Lok 40 is also certified by the DVGW for the transport of compressed air, gas and liquid gas in Germany. The maximum operating pressure (MOP) allowed here according to the DVGW certificate is up to 250 bars. The operating temperature is stated for a range between -20°C and 60°C. The Voss Fluid product range covers pre-assembled tube geometries, prefabricated hose lines, tube and flange couplings, hose fittings, and accessories for stationary and mobile hydraulics. As a development and system partner in international mechanical engineering, the focus is on application-specific system solutions.

Norma to equip vehicles with leak-proof connectors

connectors, which are manufactured at the company’s plants in Mexico, China and France. Norma Group SE – Germany

Engineered joining technology company Norma Group will supply connectors for fuel lines to an American automotive manufacturer, starting this year. By 2026, around 4.6mn vehicles in China, Korea, the USA and Mexico will each be equipped with several Safe-Lock connectors.

info@normagroup.com www.normagroup.com

“Safety is of the utmost importance in the original equipment industry, and our connecting products, as mission-critical parts, make a decisive contribution to the safe transport of fluids,” said Bernd Kleinhens, CEO of Norma Group. “This is why we are continuously developing our product solutions and making strategic acquisitions to ensure that we can offer our customers the best and safest connection technology.” The Safe-Lock connector has a double-latch mechanism and is used for the reliable connection of fuel lines. The safety requirements for fuel transport in vehicles are very high – if fuel leaks from the tank or engine, vehicle performance as well as passenger safety can be compromised. The connector also ensures reliable and proper assembly: it can only be locked if the spigot is

Tata Steel wins high frequency pipe contract for North Sea project

Barry Rust, marketing manager, energy and sustainability, said, “This latest contract award builds on our success in the North Sea, where we have secured eight projects in just over a year, and we look forward to further success as activity in the region improves. The stringent dimensional controls offered by our HFI process provides superior shape and ‘weldability’ for faster offshore welding, and our supply chain control ensures we can comply with even the tightest project schedules.” With steelmaking in the Netherlands and the UK, and manufacturing plants across Europe, Tata Steel supplies steel products to demanding markets, including construction and infrastructure, automotive, packaging and engineering.

The scope of work involves five different wall thicknesses and five different diameters, and the contract duration is 28 weeks. Tata Steel has supplied more than one million tonnes of pipeline for oil and gas projects in the North Sea over 24 years, including in excess of 500,000m of reel-installed pipe, and more than £250mn invested in subcontracts for North Sea projects.

Tata Steel has secured a contract to provide high frequency induction (HFI) line pipe for an oil and gas project northeast of Shetland in the UK North Sea. The company will manufacture more than 10km of HFI line pipe from its 20" mill in Hartlepool, UK, for ‘sleeve pipe application’ – housing smaller, critical pipelines – as part of a bundle system for the project.

Sandvik opens coiled tubing line Sandvik has opened a coiled tubing line for premium grades of seamless stainless steel products in smaller dimensions at its Zhenjiang tube mill near Shanghai, China. The commitment to produce longer weld-free coiled tubing locally will enable customers in the Asia Pacific region to receive deliveries within 28 days, instead of waiting four to six months for longer length reels to arrive from abroad. “The new coiled tube offering is a further step in our commitment to boost the competitiveness of customers in China and throughout the Asia Pacific region,” said Satish Sharath, business unit president, Sandvik Tube APAC. “We’ve seen a rising demand on projects within chemical processing, oil and gas, alternative energy and other industries for urgent local supplies of coiled tubing. The compact reels, ease of transport and ability to precisely cut lengths in challenging situations allow customers to work fast and efficiently, with fewer connectors and zero risk of system leakage.” Initially, the focus will be on Sandvik 3R60 (ASTM TP 316/316L) tubing – an austenitic chromium-nickel steel with a minimum of 2.6 per cent molybdenum and low carbon content – in outer diameters from 6 to 14mm. The coiled tube is supplied as level-wound on plastic-wrapped wooden reels in standard (55 to 260m) or longer lengths (135 to 611m), or as bulk coil, strapped into boxes. The new range complements Sandvik’s offering of 6m straight lengths of hydraulic and instrumentation tubing, which are already available in a wide range of sizes and grades. In addition to Sandvik 3R60, the company will supply other grades of high-alloy and duplex tube products in a wide range of dimensions. However, they will be handled on a case-by-case basis, by country. Sandvik Materials Technology – Sweden materials.sandvik
