Press fittings for data centre cooling systems
fitting system, there is no need to shut down the entire system in order to make repairs or expansions, and the data centre can continue to function without costly interruptions. A steel system is more resistant than those made with other materials such as plastic. Data centres are subject to constant technical maintenance. With plastic pipes, there is a possibility that instruments and maintenance carts could hit the pipes, creating hazardous obstructions in the system or possible leaks. Press fittings are installed using an electrohydraulic press. There is no need for open flames, as with welding. This means the system can be installed without having to take major precautions against the risk of fire. The chilled water systems must be perfectly insulated with suitable closed- cell material. Carbon steel may be used for this application, but is not recommended. A valid and economical alternative is the combination of 316L press fittings with 304 steel pipes. Eurotubi Europa Srl – Italy
to control the temperature, data centres need much greater cooling power, and so use a cooling system that utilises chilled water. Many of the characteristics that a data centre cooling system requires are found in the Eurotubi Pressfitting System. Significantly, the system is designed to prevent potential leaks that could be catastrophic in a location full of expensive electronic equipment. The Eurotubi Pressfitting technology has a double safety system: with the double safety sleeve and leaking O-ring, any un-pressed fittings are quickly distinguishable using the visual sleeve indicator, which tears during pressing and drops. The special structure of the Eurotubi patented trickle O-ring means any un-pressed fittings “trickle” conspicuously during the system pressure test. Data systems are often installations in progress. Units are moved and systems are updated, requiring more cooling power. With all this “traffic”, the cooling system must always be ready for changes and expansions. The installation time for a system with press fittings is on average 50 per cent less than normal plumbing systems. Thanks to the modularity of the press
The amount of computer data that we create and use is continuously growing, and is stored in increasingly large data centres. These computer complexes and archiving systems create massive amounts of heat that must be dissipated using efficient cooling systems. Eurotubi states that its stainless steel press fittings are suitable for this application. AISI 316L press fittings combined with AISI 304 pipes is one solution for creating plumbing systems for data centre cooling systems. Reliability, quality and quick installation are some of the claimed benefits of the Eurotubi press fitting system. Since these are industrial applications and not for potable water, there is no need to use AISI 316L (DVGW certified) pipes. Instead, more economical AISI 304 pipes can be used, provided by partner company Vimoter and designed to have performance that is practically equivalent to the 316. In data centres, the many rooms where computers and data storage units are located in racks must be kept within certain temperatures, and so are constantly cooled. In addition to fans
