Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. This issue we have features on steel & stainless steel tubes (page 36) and valves, fittings & flanges (starting on page 40). The technical article (page 45) discusses the welding of stainless steel tubes and is written by the experts at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques, which is based here in the UK. Sadly a number of usually busy tube-related trade shows have been postponed over the past few months, but the good news is that we have details of the rearranged dates within our pages. Of course in the majority of cases the organisers are making it as easy as possible for attendees by transferring over all tickets and stands to the new dates, so I hope that the disruption has been kept to a minimum for you. The big event of the year is of course Tube Düsseldorf and that is set to go ahead from 7-11 December. It will be good to see many of you there as the world gradually gets back to business. Other big news this issue includes a number of huge tube deals sealed between the likes of Sandvik and Tenaris (page 6); a multi-million deal by TMK as it closes the sale of Ipsco Tubular Inc – again involving Tenaris (page 13); and last but not least Tata Steel has secured three separate tube contracts from TechnicFMC for work to be carried out in the UK North Sea (page 38), which will see Sandvik add to the more than a million tonnes of steel pipes it has already built for projects in the region over the past 20 years. Next up we have the September issue. It will have features on OCTG, gas & pipeline products and also water, drainage & underground tubes. The magazine is set to be distributed as a number of big international trade shows – FABTECH 2020 in Las Vegas, USA; Tube China 2020 in Shanghai; and at EuroBLECH 2020 in Hanover, Germany.

Sandvik enters into five-year agreement with Tenaris to supply OCTG
which will be supplied by Sandvik as part of the Sandvik-Tenaris Alliance Agreement. In many parts of Abu Dhabi, the well environ- ments are extremely corrosive, making require- ments for CRA materials necessary. For this award, Sandvik will be supplying primarily Sanicro ® 28 (UNS N08028)
Sandvik, a developer and producer of advanced stainless steels, special alloys, titanium and other high-performance materials, has entered into a long-term agreement with Tenaris to supply oil country tubular goods following its award from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) last year.
ADNOC awarded Tenaris a long-term contract for the provision of tubulars and Rig Direct ® services over the next five years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Per Olsson-Artberger, global product manager OCTG, Sandvik, said: “Being involved in this award, which is one of the world’s largest in this category, further showcases our expertise and ability to produce high-quality products that meet various challenges around the world. “We are very excited to be working once again with Tenaris to support ADNOC’s activities in the UAE and look forward to
delivering materials that contribute to high productivity and cost-efficiency in this ever-evolving industry.” The award forms part of an initiative by ADNOC to secure smart procurement solutions that add value to its upstream oil and gas drilling business and promote in-country investment and service provision. It includes the supply of a full array of steel grades and connections, including Dopeless ® technology, to support ADNOC’s onshore and offshore E&P expansion projects. The award includes a relevant portion of Corrosion Resistant Alloy materials,
in dimensions from 3½" to 7" outer diameter, which is a high-alloy multi- purpose austenitic stainless steel for service in highly corrosive conditions. According to Sandvik, it has seen an increase in the demand for high corrosion resistant alloys from customers globally, as operators look to improve lifetime cycles and safety in both existing and new systems. Tata Steel outlines sustainability strategy for the future of the automotive sector
are built with steel. Steel is forever recyclable, and so can be the most sustainable material for cars, vans and trucks today and in the future.” project towards a future that Tata Steel predicts will be an automotive market based on mobility services using shared autonomous vehicles, with the majority These plans
Tata Steel has outlined a future-facing strategy that aims to move the company into the next era for manufacturing in the automotive industry. Outlining short-, medium- and long- term ambitions, the plan, developed by Tata Steel, addresses three key areas: electrification, autonomous driving and shared use; digitalisation and service offering; and sustainability. Basjan Berkhout, marketing manager, automotive, at Tata Steel Europe, said: “We are committed to pioneering the next generation of steel products for car manufacturers, allowing them to further lightweight vehicles and reduce vehicle emissions as well as improving their manufacturing efficiencies. “We have plans to create the steel plant of the future as we set out our commitment to sustainability. “In different ways, steel is expected to play an increasingly important role in the vehicle structure in the future as in our vision the most sustainable vehicles Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has recent- ly celebrated the grand opening of its new flagship 50,000ft 2 ServicePLUS Centre in Wisconsin, USA. The company also plans to expand the ServicePLUS Centre model globally, with the next centre opening in Portland, Oregon. Will Bacon, ServicePLUS segment manager, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, said: “Trelleborg acquired the previous site in September 2016. Since then, we’ve steadily expanded the business to include advanced delivery and other value-added ServicePLUS services. “In doing this, we outgrew the original space, necessitating the move to the
of vehicle sales being on a business- to-business basis as fewer consumers own cars. Tata Steel predicts that by 2050, these will primarily be propelled by an electrified powertrain though other technologies, such as H2 fuel cells, will also increase in popularity until then. The plans will support vehicle manufacturers today and in the future as they develop the next generation of hybrid and electric vehicles. The short- term strategy outlines how Tata Steel deploys a range of lightweight steels for reducing weight and cost of crash components in vehicles that are more efficient by using less energy to move. In addition, deployment of reliable steel solutions for energy storage and E-motors will help to improve driving range and cost of the vehicles in the medium term while a longer-term strategy invests in the development of new solutions for a further optimisation in future generations. SSAB has announced that it is taking the next step for a completely fossil- free steel value chain by initiating an Energy4HYBRIT pre-feasibility study supported by Business Finland to investigate the use of fossil-free energy sources, primarily biomaterial side- streams, to replace fossil fuels in certain steelmaking processes such as rolling processes. The HYBRIT initiative, owned by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, aims to replace the coke used in iron ore-based steelmaking with hydrogen. Ironmaking accounts for around 90 per cent of SSAB’s carbon dioxide emissions. The aim of the initiative is to potentially reduce Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent and Finland’s by 7 per cent. New cutting technology solves nuclear reactor drain blockages
According to EDF energy the stainless steel 75mm diameter drains were installed when the power station was built in the 1970s and are encased in concrete, which has made them difficult to keep clean. Simon Nickalls, operations manager at Lanes Preston, which carried out the work, said: “Both pipe cleaning devices were needed to achieve the required results. “As the Picote cleaner is new, this solution has only just become available. We’re very glad it was so effective. We can certainly see how it could be applied to other hard-to-reach pipe systems.” The drains are located within the radiologically controlled area (RCA) of the Heysham 1 reactor hall meaning that
Drainage engineers from Lanes Group plc have used new pipe cleaning technology to solve persistent drain blockage problems at a nuclear power station. Using two machines, a new Picote mini cleaner and an electro-mechanical cutter, the engineers cleared the drains in one of the two reactor halls at Heysham power station in Lancashire. Steve Hackett, a systems improvement engineer at the nuclear power station operated by EDF Energy, said: “Having an effective system for cleaning these effluent pipes is a big benefit for us. Persistent blockages had been adding to the operational burden for our engineering teams. We have been impressed with the drain cleaning solution and the way Lanes has implemented it.”

with a rotating steel cutting head on the end for scouring the inside of pipes. Then, the Picote mini cleaner was used to break up the blockage debris and push it into waste sumps, leaving the pipes clear. The device can be fitted with different rotating heads. In this case a flail was used. More than 100m of pipework were cleaned, along with surface water gullies and sink outlets, in three key areas: the reactor basement area, the gas circulation maintenance facility and the radiation effluent treatment plant. Lanes’ operatives had to wear specialist protective clothing and follow strict radiation protection procedures. The drains, which were contaminated with nuclear radiation, were cleaned in two stages. First, a Spartan electro-mechanical cutter was used to break through blockage material. The device has a flexible cable

LinerBridge is an alternative to conventional corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) connectors and creates a robust and fully integrated polymer barrier within the pipeline. One of the key components of a poly- mer integrated lining system is the connector technology. Connectors are required to join sections of polymer- lined pipeline together to form the overall pipeline length and to terminate the pipeline. Manufactured from the

New EPA rule points to more lead water pipeline replacement work in future
like to help and provide the resources they need to evaluate the HDPE pipe alternative. HDPE is lead-free, meets or exceeds environmental and health effects standards, and contains no additives that can be transferred to the water to affect taste or odour.” HDPE pipe has heat-fused joints and service saddles, tees and other connections and is also corrosion resistant, does not promote tuberculation, and can be installed using cut-and-cover and trenchless methods. The pipe has high flexibility, a tight bending radius, high impact resistance, high ductility, long fatigue life, self- restrained joints that do not require thrust blocks. According to PPI, this makes HDPE the preferred material for the major trenchless installation methods such as slip lining, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), Swagelining ™ and pipe bursting. The PPI Municipal & Industrial Division has a webpage devoted to lead challenges and solutions: https:// plasticpipe.org/municipal_pipe/mid-
“The impact of this change to a 10 parts-per-billion (ppb) trigger level would increase and accelerate the number of water supply lines that need to be replaced,” said Camille George Rubeiz, PE, F ASCE, senior director of engineering of PPI’s Municipal and Industrial Division. “According to the EPA, water systems above 15ppb would be required to annually replace a minimum of three percent of the number of known or potential lead service lines in the inventory when the level is detected.
As a result of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcing a new proposal that would change how communities test for lead in drinking water, the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc (PPI) has issued an overview for dealing with deteriorating pipes. As the proposed EPA update would lower the permissible lead limit and require utilities to map all service lines containing lead, the PPI document has been published to help enable communities to implement a program to eliminate the problem.
The EPA established the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) to protect public health and reduce exposure to lead and copper in drinking water. “Cost and time are certainly paramount in any community’s plan. Both can be addressed with the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe per AWWA C901 and the PPI document – Polyethylene Piping Systems Field Manual for Municipal Water. Unfortunately, certain utilities have outdated information and incorrectly select traditional materials that created this problem. We’d
