Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. This issue we have a feature on OCTG, gas & pipeline products and we take a look at BORU 2019 in Istanbul, Turkey, and TOLexpo 2019 in Lyon, France, where the January issue of the magazine will be distributed. The TPi team will of course be present at both events. Please do come and say hello if you are in Turkey or France for these fantastic trade shows. We also have a technical article from Bentley Systems, starting on page 52, taking a look at how engineers can learn to trust stress analysis results by utilising trusted engineering theories and benchmarks. In this first issue of 2019 it is clear that the general trend for the industry of 2018 will continue – investment in improving the efficiency of tube production, storage and delivery. A huge upsurge in investment in these areas was noticable last year and a story from SSAB Europe (page 7), which is investing SEK 300mn in tube production efficiency improvements, as well centralising its operations, underlines this will continue. Huge advances in technology, AI and Industry 4.0 have all helped this push and had additional benefits in terms of worker safety. One of the main problems many successful companies face is recruiting enough skilled workers to fill the roles at their production bases and factories, so it appears technology is now replacing the need for big teams of engineers. Many systems now need a single person rather than 20 to be operated, or are fully automated and can run through the night with a minimal need for human intervention. The advertising deadline for the March issue of Tube Products INTERNATIONAL is 23 January. SSAB Europe investing in tube production and improving efficiency
investment will be used to modernise the production lines at the Hämeenlinna Tube Mill. A development programme will be drawn up for the other mills, and the investments regarding this will be dealt with separately at a later date. SSAB AB – Sweden
and the mill will be closed by the end of 2020. The company will offer all Lappohja employees jobs at other SSAB Europe locations in Finland. SSAB Europe aims to increase the sales volumes of premium products, which are more profitable than standard products. One part of this strategy is to increase tube sales volumes. The SEK 300mn
SSAB Europe is to invest SEK 300mn over a two-year period to improve the efficiency of its tube production. In the same context, the tube business will be centralised to secure long-term competitiveness. Worker consultations initiated at the Lappohja Tube Mill have been completed. The event included the Youth Scientific Practical Conference, which consisted of 27 sections focused on various aspects of the company’s work, as well as training courses, master classes, competitions and lectures. The lectures featured TMK and Sinara Group boards chairman Dmitry Pumpyanskiy, Higher School of Economics rector Yaroslav Kuzminov, Boeing chairman in Russia and the CIS Sergei Kravchenko, and Russia 2018 World Cup organising committee general director Alexei Sorokin. The main part of the scientific practical events was prepared by TMK’s corporate university, TMK2U. “The Horizons International Corporate Forum occupies a special place at TMK and Sinara Group. It showcases our talent pool of future company leaders,” said TMK deputy general director Andrey Kaplunov. “It’s also an opportunity to show one’s skills and take one more step up the career ladder towards future professional and personal development.” The Horizons forum is an annual international corporate event organised

within the tube. That means a greater range of measurements can be taken and averaged out for an accurate overall reading. Therefore, a key aspect of the test rig is to better understand the velocity profile of low flow. We’re looking at designing transducers so the beam covers a bigger area, without being affected by false data – for example, by reflections of the wall of the flow tube. “The investment gives us the ability to fine-tune transducers, so customers can achieve more and minimise errors in measurement. Dynamic flow measure- ment is a big step for the industry, and the investment puts Ceramtec in the best place to advise customers on their water flow measurement.” Ceramtec says that a range of companies will see real benefits, citing more accurate billing in utility meters, precise measurement in medical equipment and improved fuel flow monitoring in automotive, industrial or oil and gas applications. The findings from the dynamic flow test rig enable Ceramtec to manufacture more precise water-coupled ultrasonic sensors. By controlling all manufacturing aspects of the piezoceramic, Ceramtec tunes its transducers to exhibit superior temperature stability, customised beam profiles and increased coupling and sensitivity. A particular benefit of the investment is the enhanced ability to examine the difference between laminar and turbulent flow – a significant factor in achieving accurate water flow readings, as Ceramtec’s business development manager, Charles Dowling, explained: “The design of flow tubes can actually affect the accuracy of flow measurement, as friction slows the velocity at the edges of the tube. In laminar flow – which is low flow and consistent – it is hard to measure the variations at the edges because the acoustic beam can’t reach them. “That isn’t a problem at higher flow, because turbulence is created and flow isn’t localised to any particular point

Made in Steel conference and exhibition In 2018, the steel industry gained the possibility to look at the future with moderate positivity. In this context, the Made in Steel trade show for the steel industry will return in 2019, from 14 to 16 May. For the first time in its more than decade-long history, Made in Steel will have a midweek schedule, opening on a Tuesday and closing on a Thursday. The location, however, will remain unchanged. In pavilions 22 and 24 of fieramilano Rho (Milan, Italy), the same as the last edition, the major players of the steel industry will gather to do business and discuss the main issues facing the sector.

Kasto builds distribution centre for steel stockholder
To streamline and speed deliveries of long stock to customers, a Unicompact high-performance storage and distri- bution system from Kasto has been installed in a new, purpose-built unit operated by Friedrich Kicherer GmbH, one of the largest steel stockholders in Germany. Three KASTOwin F bandsaws have been integrated into the system. Eberhard Frick, managing partner of Kicherer, commented, “We had a great range of materials but it was taking far too long to load the lorries. We needed something that was significantly faster than our existing stacking cradle system. To optimise material flow as well as increase storage capacity we decided to build a second steel centre, and approached two potential suppliers of bar storage warehouses, one being Kasto with which we have had a successful relationship for more than 20 years.” Kicherer ships 210,000 tonnes of steel per year. Six existing automatic storage systems from Kasto and 44 cranes in the original steel centre optimise the operation. The first Kasto store was installed in 1995, which over the years was supplemented by racking systems for tubes, stacking cradles for structural steel profiles, angles and boiler tubes, and a Uniline 3.0 sheet metal store with 610 cassettes. These investments

with central loading station linked to the stockholder’s IT system. The solution is based on a 115m-long, 15m-high automatic honeycomb storage system with space for more than 10,000 cassettes. Each can accommodate material up to 6m in length and can carry 3.4 tonnes. Fast storage and retrieval of stock is achieved with five cranes travelling at up to 180m/min along three aisles of racking. To automatically transport picked materials to the loading station, Kasto has installed two manipulators on separate rails. From these, the bar stock travels to one of 25 loading stations via a conveyor. A station with a packaging machine is provided for stretch film wrapping. The IT departments at Kicherer and Kasto have jointly modelled all components of the new logistics system in unified software within the KASTOlogic warehouse management system. Kicherer tracks its steel profiles through the store using QR codes. Every bundle that has been picked is scanned again on loading, and its status is automatically entered into the material requirements planning software for full traceability. French welding magazine welcomes new chief editor Soudage et Techniques Connexes (STC), a French magazine specialising in welding and related technologies, will have a new chief editor from the beginning of 2019. Andrea Husson’s long experience in global industries, and in particular in the worldwide welding industry, will facilitate her new task. Ms Husson, who is fluent in French, German and English, has been in contact with STC for 13 years, and her former experience as chief editor of the French stainless steel magazine Actualités Inox is an additional benefit. The French market is interesting, and in a permanent state of development. Various high-tech industries are well represented, including oil and gas, the nuclear and aerospace industry, composite materials, and additive manufacturing. Hannover Messe 2019 Hannover Messe is a trade show for industrial technology. It serves as a glob- al platform for the digital transformation of production and energy systems.

TACTIC has been in the ultrasonic inspection busi- ness since 1962, developing and selling a product line of immer- sion ultrasonic inspection systems and accessories, providing parts, repairs and training, and perform- ing independent ultrasonic testing (UT) services. The combination of LTI’s long-term experience performing ultrasonic testing and working with the TACTIC equipment makes the companies an ideal match for this acquisition. The majority of TACTIC’s standard products are designed to inspect cylindrical materials, such as tube, pipe, bar and billet. The company has also provided UT equipment to inspect hexagonal and square billet. LTI currently runs seven TACTIC immer- sion UT inspection systems under one roof on two work shifts, and is one of the company’s largest customers. The systems provide high-speed inspection of round materials to locate internal and external defects and inconsistencies in the wall thickness of tubular products. Ultrasonic testing is classified as a non-destructive test (NDT) method because it does not damage the tested materials.
“TACTIC is a perfect fit for our growing business and our companies have a long history together,” said Mike McVaugh, LTI president and CEO. “LTI was started as a non-destructive testing lab in 1984 and we have been using TACTIC equipment to perform ultrasonic testing since the beginning. They were the leader in the industry back then and still are.” TACTIC will stay at its current location and will operate as a subsidiary of LTI. TechnipFMC wins contract for Vietnam’s largest olefins plant
TechnipFMC has been awarded by Long Son Petrochemicals (LSP) a contract for the licensing, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and start- up of Vietnam’s first olefins plant on Long Son Island, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. Designed as a flexible feed cracker, the olefins plant can utilise both naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) feeds to produce olefins of up to 1.6mn tons per year, depending on the feedstock mix. The olefins will help meet Vietnam’s rising demand for petrochemical products. The plant will also include proprietary licensed units and will be based on TechnipFMC’s proprietary ethylene technology. TechnipFMC will execute the project in a consortium with SK Engineering &
proprietary ethylene technology and proven engineering, procurement and construction capabilities were key factors in this important, highly competitive award, and confirms our leadership in this market. Advisory issued for substandard plastic pipe The Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc (PPI) has issued a warning about substandard plastic pipe.
PPI is a major North American plastic pipe trade association, with many of its member companies producing resins, pipe, fittings and components. PPI and its member companies have participated in the ANSI consensus processes that led to the development of several national standards, including ASTM D2513, ASTM F2619 and API 15LE. These standards prescribe rigorous materials qualification and testing requirements for HDPE pipe to ensure that plastic piping materials meet the performance requirements of demanding applications in oil and gas field operations. “Unfortunately, due to the quickly rising demand for HDPE pipe, we’re seeing an influx of imported and even some domestic products that do not abide by our industry standards,” added Mr Radoszewski. “There is a cost for quality because of the steps required from the manufacturing of the plastic resin to the extrusion of the pipe in order to produce a product that meets industry standards and regulations. But the benefits definitely outweigh the extra cost. There are other end-user validation points such as certificates of quality from the manufacturer, on-site inspections of the plant, and an array of short-term physical property and mechanical tests and measurements on produced pipe to verify pipe quality. “Pipe manufacturers can participate in the quality systems established in the industry to ensure pipe performs as expected. This starts with a TR-4 listing in the Plastics Pipe Institute Hydrostatic Stress Board Program plus unannounced random audits conducted by an applicable certifying body.” Mr Radoszewski continued, “Accept- ance of any pipe that does not comply with these standards could cause unin- tended consequences that jeopardise the safety of employees, the affected public and the environment. We encour- age operators to inspect the piping products upon delivery to ensure it meets not only the appropriate prod- uct standards but also those within the operator’s specifications. “This is especially critical for projects in demanding oil and gas field operations, and is also important for pipe used in other pressure applications such as water, sewer, industrial and mining applications.”
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe that does not comply with the relevant product industry standards has been found in the oil and gas gathering operations of the Permian and Delaware basins in Texas and New Mexico, according to the association. These pipelines are not marked in accordance with the relevant product standard requirements, and therefore may not comply with those product standards. Pipe that is not properly marked or certified provides no assurance of product quality and may not perform as intended for the application. The notice extends to other areas where HDPE pipe is widely used, such as potable water, forced main sewers, and industrial and mining applications. “We’re issuing this advisory because we are seeing HDPE pipes that have significant quality issues,” stated Tony Radoszewski, CAE, president of PPI. “In some cases neither the manufacturer nor the origin of the pipe could be identified. A properly marked HDPE pipe includes relevant standards on the pipe’s printline to identify piping materials that meet specific standards, and to help confirm that the pipe is suitable for its intended purpose.
