Mitchell rejuvenates draw bench exper tise THE George A Mitchell Company and its founder, George Mitchell, have always been associated with the tube drawing industry. Prior to producing over 700 push pointers and special cold forming machines, the company sold and produced draw benches of various capacities for steel, copper and aluminium.
Realising the experience Mitchell has in this field, and being familiar with the machines the company has produced over the past 55 years, prompted a copper tube producer in North America to approach Mitchell to engineer and manufacture a 50,000 lb three-tube draw bench. The bench is capable of developing well over its rated 50,000 lb capacity utilising a 350 Hp reversing motor and drive system. Incorporating a pull stroke in excess of 130 ft and a triple die head with spherical die pockets for accurate die adjustment enables this bench to produce very straight tubes. Much of the technology used in the 50,000 lb-rated bench was from original patented features George Mitchell developed over his 55 years of experience in the design and manufacture of equipment for the tube

shaft tubes that are subsequently formed in a Mitchell four-station drive shaft tube forming machine. The other produces superconductor rod prior to drawing, which is further processed into wire to be used in MRI machines for the health care industry, particle accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider, and other high-tech applications. Variable wall drawn tubing is another area in which Mitchell has been involved. Developed in 1985, Mitchell holds a patent on this process. The ‘tailored drawn tubes’ can be used for a variety of applications to service the automotive, sporting goods and energy industries. drawing and forming industries, as well as innovations included by the customer, who also has extensive experience in drawing copper tubing. Prior to this tube draw bench project, Mitchell delivered two 150,000 lb rotary hydraulic push pointers that utilise servo head drive systems. One, for the automotive industry, points aluminium tubes used in the manufacture of drive
