Actioning the committee’s recommendations are the first major changes to indicate the company’s response to the grounding of its 737 Max aircraft. Mr Muilenburg confirmed that the changes will “be rolled out over the next couple of months, pending [any] further review and modifications,” which could come as a result of external accident investigations. Call for greater transparency Changes already in place include the method of reporting and considering of potential safety issues. Boeing engineers already meet for weekly safety review boards. The committee recommends “elevating” the meetings to include higher ranking officials, including the CEO, to add more “transparency and visibility”. Mr Muilenburg confirmed: “I’m now getting weekly reports that are very valuable.” The internal review is just one among many examinations currently underway, by regulators, lawmakers and the US Department of Justice, into Boeing’s development of the 737 Max. Boeing is also facing over a hundred individual lawsuits from victims’ families, who claim the company designed and built a flawed airplane. Boeing has apologised for the lives lost and is upgrading the flight control software alleged to be at the centre of the accidents, but as yet there has been no admission of fault in its development of either the aircraft or the software. “We have been very thorough in looking at every step of the design process, certification process, going all the way back to the original requirements,” said Mr Muilenburg. “We feel very confident in how that was done. But that doesn’t mean we stop learning.”

depending on the country, region, road environment, energy situation and other factors,” he added. Mr Viswanathan said that, despite the Indian government favouring EVs, the com- pany will continue to support hybrid vehicles, adding that if the government encouraged hybrids or self-charging EVs it would also benefit the EV sector, “given the commonality of parts.” Aerospace Lessons are learned and change is likely to follow – grounding the 737 Max An internal review of the Boeing Company has concluded that its engineering reporting protocols need tightening, in order to deliver faster feedback to its chief executive officer and the wider board about potential safety issues. Further recommendations include the creation of a permanent com- mittee to review Boeing’s aircraft design and development. The moves would be intended to strengthen the transparency of Boeing’s engineering decisions and speed efforts to share safety information across the company’s global businesses and factories. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, commenting on the review that followed the recent fatal crashes of Lion Air flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines flight 302, said: “Our job is to make sure accidents don’t happen. Whatever the cause is, we are going to learn, we are going to understand, and we are going to make improvements.”
