Improving small and large tube results with efficient forming, bending and cutting

solutions that are tool-independent. The t form REB 632 axial forming machine, with different equipment options and either hydraulic or electric brushless motor drives, can quickly and accurately produce various forms. The special features are incremental or stepwise forming and high-speed forming, which opens up new opportunities. With new materials, the products are both lighter and stronger. transfluid’s rollforming technology also creates the potential for tool-independent forming. Before bending or forming, a tube has to be the right length. The various transfluid cutting options take care of that. The t cut range of machines offer methods such as blade cutting on a bending machine and chipless cutting. The advanced blade cutting technology delivers almost perfectly circular results when cutting. With the machines for chipless cutting for tubes up to 28/50mm, quick, clean cutting becomes possible for a high output of 1,600 units/hour, both from bars and coils. The t cut RTO 628 improves the cutting lengths to minimise any scrap while delivering clean cutting results. In order to connect processing steps effectively, transfluid customises its automation system for individual clients. This can be at any level: from simple handling to full automation with robots. All automation systems have different inspection systems available: offering either optical measuring tools or mechanical controls, they all deliver products of a high quality. In order to include the bending machine in the production process in an efficient way, transfluid has further developed its t project software. The familiar options such as calculating the cutting lengths and recording tube data are still available. There are also innovative changes to the use of the machine controls and tools to calculate isometries, and the collision test is now simpler and more user-friendly. “Our goal was to give the user the option to make clear improvements to the manufacturing processes. And to do this in a very simple and efficient way,” said Benedikt Hümmler, managing director of engineering/production at transfluid. The experts at transfluid are always seeking to develop new processing methods to meet the challenges of forming technology, sometimes with

Walsin Lihwa places order with Kocks for China rolling mill project manufacturer Walsin Lihwa Corporation has placed an order with Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co KG, based Germany, for a Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB ® 5.0) 370++/4. After the successful start-up of the latest three-roll block at Tainan works in 2018 it is in total the third Kocks block that Walsin Lihwa is ordering from the German company. The Kocks RSB ® in 5.0 design will be installed in a new SBQ rolling mill, located in Yantai, China. The rolling mill will focus on the production of special steel grades. The Kocks RSB ® 370++/4 will finish roll all round dimensions from 18 to 100mm and hexagon dimensions from 18 to 80mm, as well as pre-rounds for the wire rod outlet. Included in the scope is, apart from the RSB ® , the Size Control System (SCS ® ), which allows real-time adjustments of the operating parameters of the rolling block, as well as the profile measuring gauge 4D Eagle ® . The planned measures ensure the high automation degree of the finishing mill with process monitoring capabilities and fast adjustments, if required. The results will be one of the most advanced SBQ rolling mills available with high productivity and quality repeatability. Measuring, control, inspection and analysis at Chinaplas 2019 trade show

pellets, optical cameras identify yellow discoloration and “black specks” inside transparent and opaque pellets, while colour deviations are detected by colour cameras. Contaminated pellets are sorted out automatically. For sample testing or incoming goods inspection and analysis of plastic material, Sikora presented the Purity Concept V at Chinaplas. Material samples, placed on a sample tray, are moved through the inspection area. Within seconds, a colour camera automatically inspects the material and a projector marks the contaminated material directly on the sample tray. By analysing the recorded images, contamination on the surface of transparent, diffuse and coloured material is automatically detected, visualised and evaluated. A clear allocation of the contamination and follow-up inspection are possible at any time. The system is claimed to be accurate and more reliable than the human eye and manual light table, determining the size of contamination and contributing significantly to quality control and process optimisation. Sikora also offers systems for offline inspection and analysis based on X-ray technology that detect and analyse metallic contamination inside plastic materials.

THE focus of Sikora’s appearance at this year’s Chinaplas was on innovative measuring, control, inspection, analysis and sorting devices. At the company’s stand, visitors saw a portfolio of systems for quality control, process optimisation and cost savings in the pipe, hose, tube and plastics industries. For online inspection and sorting of plastic material, Sikora showcased the Purity Scanner Advanced, which combines X-ray and optical technology to detect contamination inside plastic pellets as well as on their surface. Detection is enhanced by the adaptive camera concept, where up to three optical cameras are used, depending on the expected contamination and application. For example, an X-ray camera detects metallic contamination inside

QUAKER Chemical Corporation and Houghton International have combined to create Quaker Houghton, a global leader in industrial process fluids to the primary metals and metalworking markets. Along with the new name, the company has revealed a new logo and brand representing the combined companies. The combined $1.6bn revenue company employs 4,000 associates serving 15,000 customers worldwide. In this way, the powder atomisation system, powder and printer are perfectly coordinated to produce optimal end products. The joint venture Boxbay, founded together with DP World, a port operator in Dubai, also stems from the New Horizon strategy. This project involves a new interpretation of the storage and transport technology from SMS subsidiary Amova for handling metal coils that weigh up to 50 tons. industry and encourages education and partnerships,” he said. “It is a thrill for me to have been offered the position.” Looking to the future, he believes, will always be vital and he is determined to facilitate this by bringing his extensive experience of the industry past and present to the role. “The depth of understanding that my time in the business has generated is a firm basis going forward,” he added. “And I am always keen to make this background and knowledge available to everyone in the industry. Now, through this generous acknowledgement by the AWD, I have the perfect vehicle to do so.” It is a stance that will be widely endorsed by the association, which honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award two years ago. “Training, continuous innovation and enthusiasm – they are all building blocks for the future of the welding industry,” he concludes, “and if I can continue to help move these factors forward then I will be very happy.” At 83 years of age – and with a determination to still be involved in the industry by the time he reaches 90 – you would not bet against this one-time fireman on the Flying Scotsman who, today, is an example and an inspiration to everyone he meets. Now, as he prepares to take on the role of president of the AWD – an honour of which he is extremely proud – he is just as keen to draw attention to the future. As enthusiastic today as when he took on his first welding equipment sales role some 55 years ago, Mr Westerman is quick to stress two key factors, which will continue to be at the heart of his work and approach: “Firstly, the role played by welding activities across industry, both at home and overseas, cannot be overstated and will continue to grow,” he said. “The technology can be seen everywhere – from aerospace, automotive and heavy engineering to domestic products, white goods and recreational equipment – so its quality and ongoing innovation will always be fundamental. Fives selected for major revamping project MA’ANSHAN Iron & Steel Co Ltd (Masteel) in China, which has been investing in upgrading production facilities, has awarded Fives a turnkey contract to revamp a continuous galvanising line (CGL) to produce new coated products. the new furnace with a heat recovery system into the existing line, and design of the specific equipment to meet new coating requirements. Fives possesses the technical expertise and operations practice to overcome these challenges, which is why it was selected for this project.

Fives will use a modular concept furnace to minimise the production stoppage and will provide a dedicated team for start-up and production ramp- up to rapidly reach high-quality grades of new coated products. The project will also be supervised by Fives’ subsidiary in Shanghai, China, which will be responsible for manufacturing the local furnace portion and supply of its electrical and automation parts. The first coil is scheduled to be produced by the end of 2020. Fives and Masteel have enjoyed a long-lasting cooperation over the last 15 years: three continuous galvanising lines and a continuous annealing line have been equipped with Fives furnaces.

The existing CGL No 1 at the Ma’anshan-I site in the Anhui province of China is capable of producing 350,000 tonnes of zinc coated products per year. Once revamped, the line will be able to deliver the corrosion-resistant ZnAlMg (Zinc - Aluminium – Magnesium) coated steel sheets required in the home appliances and construction industries. Fives will be responsible for coordinating and project managing the revamping project. Fives’ scope also includes the design and supply of a Stein horizontal furnace, as well as modifications of the after-pot cooling tower and a post-treatment section, which will be equipped with a new hot air dryer and air coolers. The project faces a double challenge: integration of

50 years of pipe fusion machines from McElroy MCELROY, a 65-year-old company with small beginnings as a contract job shop, is marking its 50 th year as a manufacturer of thermoplastic pipe fusion machines. “If you look at the industries that have already embraced this technology, they believe in it,” said Chip McElroy, president of McElroy. “Those people are already believers and are challenging us to make our equipment more efficient, even easier to operate and to create the tools that let pipeline owners know joints were done per specification.” Company founder Art McElroy shakes hands with Jean Louthan, a chemical engineer from Phillips Driscopipe, at Phillips’s facility in Perryton, Texas, USA

Its sales team gave demonstrations, trained customers, rented machines, sold parts and made repairs. In 1981, Art McElroy created McElroy University, a formal training facility to ensure that operators and inspectors develop best fusion practices. The company also moved towards a distribution network in 1984 to sell equipment on a broader scale. In the 1990s, McElroy was encouraged by the mining industry to create a self-propelled fusion machine. The prototype was a self-contained, track-mounted 500mm fusion machine. That line of equipment is now known as the TracStar ® , and has become the flagship of McElroy’s machine lines. The TracStar is available in a full range of sizes from 28" to 48" OD. Its benefits includemobility and hydraulic assistance on key functions. “I think what they really have delivered is they have made our one machine/one operator concept of butt fusion more effective,” said Chip McElroy. Sparked by the increasing use of pipe up to 2,000mm, McElroy set out on a completely new design to meet the challenge. The Talon 2000 is a self- propelled machine with a jaw design that self-loads pipe from the ground, positions it to be fused and moves from joint to joint down the pipeline. The new method for handling pipe known as pipelining provides a safer, more efficient way to fuse large pipe. in outdoor, underground construction, McElroy took its products inside in 2014 with equipment to fuse polypropylene pipe for plumbing and mechanical systems.
