was somewhat heartened to read reports that indicate the beginning of 2021 saw a sharp increase in steel demand as factories and infrastructure projects started up again. While of course metallurgical plants are still recovering from the operational downtime incurred during the lockdowns – and some countries are facing further waves of Covid-19 – the recovery of the automotive sector and other downstream industries has occurred at a faster pace than expected, generating the conditions for strong steel demand. This shows how industries like tube & pipe can never be kept down for long. They are too important to how our planet operates. The editorial deadline for the July issue is 27 May. It will have four main features: straightening technology & equipment; finishing & end finishing; plastic & composite tube production; and software for design, production & management. HYPERTHERM, a manufacturer of industrial cutting systems and software, has announced the release of Rotary Tube Pro™ 3, a major version update of its tube and pipe cutting software for machines with a rotary axis. This new release contains numerous additional features and enhancements making it easier to design and cut tube parts. The features include common line cutting, which allows operators to cut two or more parts so that they share at least one common line with one another, which provides greater material utilisation and better consumable life; costing for parts, nests, and jobs to include factors such as consumable wear, machine operating cost, labour costs and electricity; and auto-select of material so operators

Tube bender makes light work of life-saving Halo system and other titanium structures

UK-BASED SST Technology has invested in a Unison Breeze all-electric CNC tube bending machine. This investment has not only assisted the company in becoming the only British- based precision fabricator authorised to produce the life-saving Halo titanium driver protection system, as used in Formula One, but it has also equipped the business to complete numerous complex structural projects involving titanium tube – including roll-cage structures for military vehicles and aerospace components. The machine, a Unison Breeze 130mm large diameter multi-stack tube bender, was purchased to help SST produce high-performance optimal-flow exhaust systems for Formula 1, IndyCar and other motorsport sectors. With a pedigree in motorsport components and a powerful new tube bending machine to hand, however, SST’s thoughts quickly turned to driver safety. The exceptionally tight material control, production parameters and dimensional tolerances provided by the all-electric Unison Breeze tube bender, combined with SST’s considerable experience in the development and manufacture of ultra-precise fabri- cations, led to the company’s Halo design securing FIA conformity for use in Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula E motorsport and being adopted by several race teams. SST’s Halo design requires the precise bending of titanium tube of 4mm wall thickness. Titanium, however, is notoriously difficult to bend. With low uniform elongation typically requiring a much greater bend radii than other metals, titanium does not readily lend itself to being formed – a characteristic that makes creating tubular structures for aerospace and motorsport applications particularly challenging. For successful tube forming, the material must be compressed on the inside of the bend and stretched on the outside, while wall thinning and ovality of the tube have to be kept to very tight tolerances. Traditionally, ‘hot bending’ – a process involving the use of super-heated tooling – has been used to overcome the challenges of bending titanium.

However, the very process of hot bending presents a number of issues. For example, the use of super-heated tooling requires considerable care and can present a hazard to operators; complex modifications must be made to bending machinery, and tooling heat-up times are lengthy. By contrast, Unison’s infinitely controllable and robust all-electric machines enable the safe, precise cold bending of titanium. With advice and application support from the technical team at Unison Ltd, SST was therefore able to develop a cold-bending process for its Halo design that allowed for the low elongation of the metal and delivered precise results. “To successfully cold-bend titanium, factors such as material quality, tooling configuration, machine design and flexibility of control need to be considered,” commented Unison key account manager, Steve Haddrell. “This is because any variation in material quality, any lack of rigidity in the mechanics of the bending machine and any failure to achieve repeatability time after time will invariably lead to failure. With exceptional power, optimal rigidity, precise mechanical motion and all-electric control for accurate, effortless repeatability, we knew the 130mm Breeze was the ideal machine for precision-bending SST’s Halo design. With material quality assured, it really came down to working with

SST to establish the correct tooling configuration and programming of the Unison Unibend machine operating system.” “Investing in the 130mm Unison Breeze machine has clearly paid dividends,” said SST Technology’s group business development director, Daniel Chilcott. “Tool changes are rapid, pro- gramming is incredibly user friendly, while the automatic setup ensures uncompromising levels of accuracy and repeatability. Sufficiently impressed with the capabilities of our 130mm machine, we have also purchased a smaller 65mm Breeze model for the production of more intricate pipework and parts for aerospace and gas turbine applications. Combining this capability with our AS9100REVD accreditation means we are perfectly set up to support leading aerospace propulsion, fluid and air system OEMs.” The Unison Breeze 130mm tube bender purchased by SST is well suited to manipulating exotic alloys such as titanium and Inconel, as well as Super- Duplex stainless steels and provides high-quality thin wall bending. Multi- stack tooling allows the most complex of parts to be formed in one uninterrupted manufacturing cycle, while Unison’s bar code scanning system ensures that only the correct tooling is installed. The standard-fit rise and fall pressure die can result in significant savings in tooling costs and allows tools of very different radii to be used on a part within a cycle. The tube bender can be programmed manually or fromCAD data using industry standard IGES or STEP files. “At Unison, we are often invited to advise customers on particularly challenging tube bending projects,” concluded Mr Haddrell. “That’s partly because of the immense capabilities offered by our tube bending machines. AssistingSSTon establishing the optimal tooling configuration of their Unison Breeze machine for the production of the life-saving Halo device, however, is one of the most rewarding projects we have been involved in.”

Large manufacturer chooses Thermatool’s HAZControl™ technology HF welder

TODAY’S tube and pipe manufacturers are required to have increasing versatility in the creation of products for their customers that also adhere to the strictest quality standards. To date, most welding equipment has been used in singular applications that restrict a manufacturer’s ability to produce multiple products on the same production line. Meanwhile, some manufacturers have adopted new, variable output, precise heat input control, HF welding machines that give them the flexibility to win more business by producing multiple products as orders come in. To meet this growing challenge, Thermatool has started producing variable frequency HF welders, offering a range of welding frequencies. The stabilised power output is available from 50kW to 2000kW, which allows manufacturers to produce 1.5" diameter pipes in the morning and 3.5" pipes in the afternoon if they wish, combined with Thermatool’s easy-to-use operator console that stores ‘recipes’ for future use. “When we were running the electric resistance welding copper wheel system previously, we had to make sure the seam was straight up, the profile was just right, and start the welder by producing scrap to allow the copper wheel to heat up before everything was ready to go,” explained the plant

This focus provides proven HF welder performance.” Thermatool’s machines give operators the ability to maintain a stable welding frequency and stable power output, even at low power levels. That means every tube has the same weld quality, from start-up to full speed to shut down, and scrap is kept to a minimum. “We knew going to an HF welder would consume less power than the copper wheel,” the plant engineer of the cooling equipment manufacturer explained, “So we installed a power data logger to see exactly how much power we saved: with our Thermatool machine, we’re utilising 54 per cent less energy compared to the weld wheel system we used to have. In addition, we’re not consuming any power at all on standby mode. Plus, we’ve seen our run time percentage reduced by 50.1 per cent while our mill speed increased by exactly 25 per cent. It’s miles ahead of what we’ve had in the past.”

Global Industrie announces relaunch programme to help the manufacturing sector

INTHEwake of the French government’s relaunch plan, Global Industrie has set up a long-term programme: GI Relaunching Booster. The goal is to bring players in the sector together to boost the relaunch of the French economy and industry through a series of complementary events designed in a coherent way by the organisers. euroTECH’s result is a loading system that can control three positions within the sawing area from the output area. The 22m portal runs along the back of the saw, loading it with panels made from a wide range of materials (aluminium, non-ferrous metals, technical plastics) from the rear end. The saw uses the profibus system to request the material, while the computerised portal monitors all requirements. A high-powered vacuum unit controls the mechanical intake system, which prevents surface damage to the panels. An integrated separating unit ensures smooth operations and increases production security. Mr Otte added: “We at Alu-Point especially liked that euroTECH were always easy to reach and that there was always a member of their service team on site. Our collaboration produced good results very quickly. Our employees and I are very pleased with the outcome.”

Cut pipes, cut costs and become a green manufacturer SICA, an Italian pipe machinery manufacturer, has gone green to contribute to a sustainable world with its new ‘green machines’. Its investment in research and development are geared to machines that reduce process costs, reduce energy and material consumption and avoid plastic dust and chips recycling, assuring a clean and safe environment. One example of how the company achieved this is the patented solution to cut and chamfer PVC pipes without removing material. After years of research, Sica is now promoting a saw that warms up a portion of the pipe, cuts it with a parting knife and then creates a bevel by shaping the heated portion instead of using a chamfer tool that removes material, which creates dust and/or chips. It is a big innovation that allows a noiseless cut and avoids the expensive need for recycling material, cleaning the environment around the saw, and also downstream. In fact, with traditional saws, even when there is an excellent vacuuming system for dust and chips, they cannot completely avoid chip depositing on the saw mechanism or on the cut pipe. Therefore, pipes will always carry part of the scrap material with them on their way towards the belling machine or the end of the line. Avoiding environment pollution and reducing costs is important in order to give the world a chance if it is to be preserved for the well-being of future generations, according to Sica. Another interesting innovation in the field of cutting swarfless pipes is the patent pending electric saw for HDPE, PP-R, multilayer and PVDF pipes. Each cutting movement is electric, therefore silent, precise and extremely repetitive. In particular, for the movement of the cutting arm, the machine has been equipped with an innovative extremely compact servo-actuator, which integrates the motor and gear unit, and which guarantees (when compared to other electric actuators available on the market) superior thrust forces even at high speeds, impact resistance, complete absence of vibrations and high efficiency. Successful large-diameter pipe installation in Mexico by battenfeld-cincinnati

HDPE PIPE specialist Policonductos SA de CV, based in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, has started to produce large- diameter pipes with diameters up to 1,600mm. For this purpose, the plastics processor purchased a complete line from battenfeld-cincinnati Germany GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen, which was recently installed and successfully commissioned. The special feature of this large- diameter pipe extrusion line is its pipe die, which comes with the largest melt gap ever produced, and thus enables the production of pipes in a wide range of different diameters without conversion. At the world premiere of this largest adjustable melt gap for large-diameter pipe dies, at K 2019, it was already clear that this die would subsequently be shipped to the new customer Policonductos. battenfeld-cincinnati had

impressed this pipe manufacturer with its overall line concept and the high dimensional flexibility provided by the adjustable melt gap. “We are absolutely enthusiastic about the range of options offered by this new line. So we have not only been able to expand our product range to include large-diameter pipes, but we can now also produce pipe dimensions to individual customers’ specifications without any problems”, said Homero Garza, general manager at Policonductos, who praised the machine manufacturer after the first weeks of production with the new line. With this large-diameter pipe extrusion line, which in addition to the new pipe die is equipped with an extruder of the latest generation, a solEX 120 NG, as well as all upstream and downstream components, such as gravimetric metering, EAC internal pipe cooling, vacuum tanks, spray cooling baths, haul-off and cutting saw, Policonductos reaches an output of up to 2 t/h. It makes HDPE pipes with a colour stripe for fresh water supply, sewage disposal and mining applications with dimensions ranging from 406 x 12.5mm to 1.651 x 97.1mm. The recently delivered line belongs to the series of

fast dimension change (FDC) systems, which battenfeld-cincinnati has been marketing successfully for a number of years. Up to now, FDC lines were available for pipes with diameters ranging from 160 to 250mm, 200 to 355mm and 400 to 630mm. With the new pipe die, the first step has now been taken towards a completely new dimension for pipes up to 1,600mm in diameter. There are no comparable systems on the market. An adjustable melt gap makes particularly good sense wherever the pipe manufacturer desires to produce varying pipe dimensions on its line and to respond fast and flexibly to market trends. More or less at the push of a button the pipe die switches over to a new pipe dimension. A major advantage is safe handling. Especially for large pipes like those produced by Policonductos, a die change would be necessary on a conventional line, which would not only cost an enormous amount of time, but would also be a safety hazard due to the large size. Both these drawbacks are now eliminated.
