On the cover . . . AUSTRIAN machinery specialist Linsinger has produced its popular tube cut-off machine-series Multi-Cut for many years. Managers responsible for service and maintenance in tube mills often find that machines need to be repaired and improved more than suppliers sometimes claim when they originally purchased the machine.

This is something Linsinger specifically works to avoid. “We plugged in the Linsinger Multi-Cut and it has been running from the first minute,” said the manager responsible for the maintenance department of the German tube specialist Mannesmann Line Pipe MLP in Hamm. The Linsinger tube cut-off machine was first installed in 2004 and has worked continuously since then without a problem. The construction and installation of the cut-off machine into an existing pipe production line was a smooth process with the help of Linsinger and its technicians. The 50-ton machine has shown its pedigree from the beginning. With low tool costs and optimised saw blade life the MultiCut MC 4-610 cuts the burr- free inner and outer edges of longitudinal welded tubes in an exceptionally fast time.

Two new drawing lines for MMK-Metiz EJP has received an order from Russian OJSC MMK- Metiz for the supply of two drawing lines to be installed at the Magnitogorsk works. One is a combined drawing line for bright steel with diameters between 8 and 30mm. It will be the world’s first 30-ton drawing line equipped with a driven cold rolling stand in order to be able to produce square bright steel sections from round input stock. The second line is a chain draw bench line for the production of bars with diameters of up to 68mm.

of up to 68mm, straight from bar to bar. Both lines will be equipped with eddy-current testers for inline inspection of the surface quality. In case of small to medium diameters, the machine can process three bars simultaneously. Denis Kanaev, director tech- nology at MMK-Metiz, said: “We conducted a comprehen- sive market analysis and EJP clearly came out on top when we drew up the technology shortlist. The EJP lines fulfil our requirements 100 per cent. Once our new lines are running we hope to be one of the leading producers in Europe in terms of product quality and delivery performance.” Jacques Paraskevas, man- aging director of EJP, said: “The order from MMK-Metiz is the biggest in our company history. We have already

larger diameters. The high product quality – straightness tolerance of 0.1mm/m and diameter tolerances of h8 and h9 – will provide MMK-Metiz with a strong position in the Russian bright steel market. The new lines will boost the works output by approximately 15 tons per hour of bright steel products. With a drawing force of 30 tons and drawing speeds of up to 80m/min, the combined drawing line CDS 300 will produce finished bars in diameters from 8 to 30mm – from coil to bar, coil to coil or bar to bar as desired. EJP will install an innovative driven cold rolling stand between the blasting plant and the drawing machine. The

function of the rolling stand is to pre-form the material so that it will be possible to directly draw from round to square. The high-precision drive control will make the forming process more accu- rately controllable than in the past. The servo-electric actuation of the drawing jaws achieves more flexibility in bar and tube drawing, cuts the set- up times and reduces the maintenance effort. The DB 800 chain draw bench will be designed for drawing forces of up to 80t and the production of bars in diameters

Record breaking week for EFD Induction

EFD Induction has sold eight Weldac solid-state welders in a week, breaking its previous record of six welders in a week. “Two of the Weldacs were sold to customers in the US while six were sold in Europe,” said the global sales director for tube and pipe, Peter Runeborg. Weldac is EFD Induction’s family of high-output, solid-state tube and pipe welders. The Weldac family covers a wide range of power sizes; from 50kW to 2,200kW and a frequency range of 90- 500kHz. EFD Induction can provide up to 1,100kW in a single cabinet welder. The Weldacs that were sold vary in size from 200 to 650kW and are all single-cabinet solutions. As if breaking the sales record was not enough, Mr Runeborg was anticipating even more contracts being signed. “The week isn’t over yet and we are actually about to close the deal on two more welders,” he added.

With this new design the drive torque capacity and thus the productivity of the converter can be increased without the need for additional space. The SMS group competence centre for industrial gear manufacturing, based in Hilchenbach, Germany, developed the new gearwheel design and manufactures industrial gear units such as these for worldwide applications. The purpose of installing the hydraulic torque retainer from SMS group is to minimise the destructive forces on the gears, bearings and foundations during the AOD converter blowing process. The use of the new electrohydraulic torque retainer means the previously uncontrollable dynamic loads, to which the converter equipment as a whole is subjected, are significantly reduced. Sandvik Materials Technology was impressed with the positive results of the new torque retainer in use by another European customer of SMS group. Sikora is laying foundation stone for new production building in Bremen

SIKORA AG has started construction work for its new production building at its headquarters in Bremen-Mahndorf, Germany. In December 2017 the executive board of the company laid the foundation stone for the new building in the presence of employees and business partners. During the process a time capsule was placed into the prepared foundation. The expansion of the location creates more space for efficient production and logistics as well as ideal conditions for communication, creativity and innovation. The completion of the building is scheduled for November 2018. The new building, with an effective area of 7,000m 2 , offers space for production and logistics on three floors, including a stacked storey with areas for communication and creativity purposes to help increase new idea generation and innovation. The building will be erected on the site of the old production building, which has now been demolished. Production has been moved to a building 400m away in order to maintain continuity for the management, administration and development teams at the company. The project is being supported by BAB – The development bank for Bremen and Bremerhaven. “The expansion at the production location Bremen is a strategic future investment,” said Dr Christian Frank, CEO of Sikora AG. “We invest in further growth and global competitiveness.” Strong growth as well as diversification of the company in new markets and

architect Jürgen Keil, associate of Gruppe GME. He added: “We have found a perfect solution that combines the contemporary and traditional elements. This is reflected in the design of the exterior as well as the interior planning, which, in addition to production specific aspects, offers creative areas for communication purposes and new ideas.” With the new construction Sikora also makes a clear commitment to Bremen as a production location. “We want to continue gaining qualified employees for our company in Bremen and to remain attractive for them,” explained Dr Frank. This year, new employees have already been hired for production and logistics. “In 2018, our work force will continue to grow to meet the increasing requirements of the market,” said Dr Frank. Sikora AG is a manufacturer and supplier of measuring and control technology for the hose and tube, wire and cable as well as optical fibre and plastic industry. With over 250 employees worldwide, 14 international offices and more than 30 regional representatives, the company provides customers with innovative product solutions and individual service. The measuring and control systems are made at the headquarters in Bremen. Innovation, product quality and customer satisfaction define the daily activities at Sikora AG.

the accompanying new and further developments of technologies and devices prompted the expansion. Sikora serves the four industrial areas wire and cable, optical fibre, hose and tube, and plastics with measuring, control, inspection and sorting technology. “Our portfolio grew significantly in the last few years for the cable segment as well as in optical fibre measuring technology and the hose, tube, sheet and plastics industry, and we reached the limits of our capacity with the existing building,” said Dr Frank. The new building offers 350 per cent more space for the growing businesses. The expansion will also be used to make existing procedures more efficient and innovative. The integration of modern, lean production concepts is a key element in order to increase productivity. Prior to the construction of the new building, an intensive planning phase took place where existing processes were recorded in order to optimise material flows from incoming goods, via production up to the shipping department. The result is a more efficient and innovative production to ensure product quality as well as delivery reliability. The architectural realisation of the production building is carried out by Gruppe GME, who also realised the previous three Sikora buildings. “The challenge was to find a design concept that emphasises the contemporary character of the new building and also harmonises with the existing two buildings,” explained

Yokogawa releases latest software version YOKOGAWA Electric Corporation has announced the release of Enterprise Pipeline Management Solution (EPMS) R1.03, the latest version of an enterprise level pipeline applications suite that was first released to the market in June 2015. The EPMS suite is the product of over 20 years of Yokogawa experience in implementing oil and gas pipeline management solutions. of tailor-made applications that often have a complex system architecture for protection from security breaches poses increasing challenges for pipeline operators. The EPMS suite is a sustainable so- lution made up of pipeline applications that may be used in combination with common supervisory and monitoring functions, and is based on a modular platform that is both IT friendly and secure. When transitioning from one product to another in a pipeline, a trans-mix that is of a certain volume, and varies in quality, will be formed at the interface between the adjacent fluids. With EPMS R1.03, multiple product cuts from the same interface can be performed, for the easy management of quality gradations. The use of product density meters to detect variations in interface quality based on colour and sulphur content are also now supported.

Developed for deployment at the centre of the pipeline operations management environment, the EPMS supplements a core SCADA platform with specific gas and liquid applications that enable a pipeline operator to manage delivery contracts and associated logistics in a safe and efficient manner. Many pipeline SCADA systems are tailored to suit a specific set of circumstances, and lack both a standard system foundation for supporting pluggable application modules and a core design that ensures interoperability with enterprise IT environments and policies. The maintenance and upgrade

For the delivery of products to different tanks, EPMS R1.03 allows multiple flow paths to share use of the same physical meter. This is made possible by the assignment of a ‘logical meter’ to each flow path. The assigned logical meters are then associated with a specific physical meter. This reduces the number of physical meters that are required to cover a specific application. Yokogawa Europe BV – Netherlands Email: info@nl.yokogawa.com Website: www.yokogawa.com/eu

As no two pipeline applications are identical and operational philosophies can differ between pipeline operators, the EPMS suite allows the easy modification of templates and functions, without having to call in pipeline application experts. EPMS can be offered in combination with advanced pipeline simulation solutions that both reduce commissioning time and enable the full simulation of the pipeline operations management environment for the training of operators. New functionality includes enhanced interface management.

Sikora at NPE 2018 trade show SIKORA is a manufacturer and global supplier of measuring, control, inspec- tion, analysis and sorting devices, and will be attending NPE in Orlando with its comprehensive portfolio of systems for quality control, process optimisation and cost savings for the hose, tube, sheet and plastics industries. With the Centerwave 6000, Another highlight is the Purity Scanner Advanced for online inspection and sorting of plastic material. The combination of an X-ray camera with a flexible, optical camera system is claimed to be the only technology at present that reliably detects con-

tamination on the surface as well as inside plastic pellets. Contaminated pellets are automatically sorted out. Depending on the type of contamination and application, optical high-speed cameras as well as X-ray, colour and infrared cameras are used. For smaller material throughputs and for applications where sampling analysis or incoming goods inspection are sufficient, Sikora offers the Purity Concept systems. Alternatively, these analysis devices can be equipped with X-ray technology, optical cameras or infrared sensors and detect contamination in pellets, flakes, films/ tapes and crosshead parts. Sikora will also show a wide range of systems for online measurement of the diameter, ovality, wall thickness and eccentricity of products, as well as for lump detection. range of mandates in sales and marketing as a consultant and principal. “I am very much looking forward to inspiring existing and new customers with enthusiasm for the innovative and high quality products and system solutions provided by egeplast together with the entire team,” said Mr Haferkamp. “Even today, egeplast holds an excellent position both in the booming field of cable conduits for broadband access and related to pressure pipes for critical infrastructures. Now the task will be to tap into the existing growth potential both nationally and internationally.” From its factory for polymeric pipe systems, egeplast supplies multi-layer pipes, including the corresponding fit- tings, as all-in-one solutions for drinking water and sewage pipes, gas pipelines and protective pipes for glass fibre and electricity cables.

Sikora showcases a system for the measurement of diameter, ovality, wall thickness and sagging of large plastic pipes during extrusion. The system is based on millimetre waves technology and measures pipes from 90 to 3,200mm. The Centerwave 6000 is available in a rotating version and offers complete measurement of the wall thickness at 360 points of the entire circumference of the pipe. Alternatively, a multiaxial system is available with static sensors. The Planowave 6000, also based on millimetre waves technology, is used for thickness measurement of plastic sheets.

IOS secures new £12.5mn contracts STORAGE and inspection firm Independent Oilfield Services (IOS) has secured two major new contracts, worth more than £12.5mn. The Sumitomo Corporation Europe has awarded IOS an eight-year, £10mn contract to carry out OCTG management and inspection services, while Odfjell Drilling has agreed a £2.5mn contract for the management and inspection of drill pipe. IOS is now proceeding with a £3mn expansion to its Longside Supply Base near Peterhead, UK, in order to significantly expand its capacity to service the two new clients as well as its existing customer base. This represents the second phase of a new £5.5mn investment by IOS in the region. Late last year IOS announced that it had purchased its previously leased 32-acre site at the former Longside airfield for £2.5mn. The company retains a 15-year option to lease additional sites at Longside, with potential to extend its facility to 100 acres. Following the granting of planning permission at the end of last year to create an additional 35 acres of storage, work has now begun on the construction of new warehousing, an inspection facility and a machine shop. The expansion will create around 20 additional jobs with the company, which has already doubled its workforce in recent years. IOS’s new inspection facility will give it additional capacity to handle the requirements of the Sumitomo contract. The OCTG inspection and preparation resource will prepare and inspect up to 300 joints per day – triple the current capacity. The key factors in Sumitomo’s selection of the facility were the close proximity to the Peterhead port, the range of services provided and the potential for future expansion. Donald MacKay, VP for European business at Odfjell Well Services, said, “We awarded this contract to IOS because the size of the facility and the range of equipment they have available enables quick and efficient loading and offloading, which allows us to meet our very tight deadlines and deliver a reliable service to our growing client base.” Also included in the expansion is a new machine shop and an additional 2,000m 2 of warehousing, which will add to IOS’s existing indoor storage capacity of 4,000m 2 . Glynn Geddie, managing director at IOS, commented, “We are delighted to have won these two important new contracts. We have already made major investments in our Longside site to ensure that we provide a first-class service in a state-of-the-art facility for our customers. Our expansion will significantly increase our capacity to meet the operational requirement of all our clients. “We chose the site at Longside because of its prime location only four miles from the quayside at Peterhead. The proximity to the port provides a very competitive alternative through reduced transport and fleet costs for oil and gas operators and service companies who berth at Peterhead’s deep water quays.”
