Magnetic Analysis Corp NDT test systems for tubes

NDT test instruments and systems for inspecting tube, pipe, bar, and wire will be featured at Magnetic Analysis Corp and Inmar Engineering Corp’s stand at the rearranged Tube India in Mumbai. MAC’s range of Ultrasonic systems for welded and seamless steel tube will be highlighted at the event, which has been rescheduled for September. A recent online Weld Zone Test system has also been delivered to a major Indian tube producer and is already inspecting large diameter ERW tubes for hydraulic cylinders for mobile equipment. The system features MAC’s Echomac ® Ultrasonic Test Head installed after the welding operation. Designed to test 63.5 to 190mm diameter tube with wall thickness ranging from 4mm to 12.7mm at speeds up to 45m per minute, the system uses clockwise and counterclockwise UT channels to detect OD and ID longitudinal defects typically found in ERW processing. The test head is supported by a cantilevered beam that allows it to operate on the weld line for mill testing, or off-line for easy calibration for a new tube size. Individual transducer shoes can be easily exchanged for size changes in a few seconds using the quick disconnect mechanisms. A monitor displays a laser beam that must bisect the weld centre allowing the operator to quickly verify and adjust the test head with its transducer assemblies to follow the weld to achieve continuous optimal testing over a weld position of 10:00 to 2:00 o’clock. A coupling alarm alerts the operator to any loss of coupling between any

transducer and the tube caused by loss of water or improper alignment. The system is programmed with the transducer locations, and a spray marker located

down-stream automatically sprays paint onto the actual defect location to enable sorting of the cut tubes. The system also includes a Minimac ® 55 eddy current tester to detect open welds and test coupons and signal the test head to lift automatically to avoid damage to the tester. Information on the Echomac ® 25mm UT Rotary, which is designed for high performanceapplications suchas tubular product for nuclear and aerospace installations, will also be available at the booth. This full body test equipment provides 100 per cent coverage at high throughput rates on product ranging from 5 to 25mm diameter. The 630mm overall length of the Rotary allows for ease of installation when upgrading existing inspection lines. Wall thickness as thin as 0.3mm and tubes as short as 1m can be successfully tested. The local remote pulsar/receiver allows high gain but provides low susceptibility to mill electrical interference, and wide band width transformer signal coupling allows selection of any transducer frequency from 5 to 17MHz. Other features include 8,000 RPM running speed, precision test blocks and transducer holders, convenient adjustment of the transducer angle, and optimum operating safety. The 25mm Rotary joins MAC’s line of UT Rotaries, which range up to 500mm capacity. MAC’s Echomac FD-6/6A

instrumentation, is available for use with the 25mm Rotary providing outstanding inspection of ID/OD, longitudinal and transverse flaws, wall thickness and dimensional evaluation including conditions of eccentricity and ovality. The Echomac ® Model 6A holds GE Qualification for P3TF31 and P29TF82 Class A and B, typically required to meet high level quality standards for aerospace and other critical applications. Full details will also be available at the booth on the recently introduced Ultrasonic Phased Array Echomac ® PA TW for detecting weld zone defects in tube and pipe. With minimal operator interaction, tube producers can use one array to sequentially monitor scarf, evaluate laminar defects, and/or detect longitudinal OD/ID defects, typical of the welding process. Installation can be online in the hot zone after the welder, for profile and flaw detection or in a lower temperature area for flaw detection after forming and shaping. B and C scans display a real time image of the weld profile and defects, ensuring the operator is quickly alerted about issues with the scarfing process. The system includes a 5-axis robot pre- programed to move to the weld line test position, a calibration position, or quickly retract to safety when integrated signals from the mill’s PLC indicate open welds, cut outs and other conditions that could cause damage.
