T&T Tubecraft invests in Unison’s CNC tube bending machine for subcontractors

TUBE manipulation and pipe bending subcontract business, T&T Tubecraft, has taken delivery of a new all-electric 130mm diameter multi-stack CNC tube bending machine from leading tube manipulation technology specialists, Unison Ltd. This is the third Unison tube bender to be purchased by T&T Tubecraft since 2014. It joins a 50mm Unison Breeze machine and a 100mm Unison Breeze multi-stack model that are in daily use at T&T Tubecraft’s Woking, UK-based facility. Offering exceptional power and immense levels of flexibility, the 130mm machine has been described by Unison as ‘the ultimate tube bending machine for subcontractors’. “Of all our tube benders, our 100mm Unison machine is easily the busiest,” commented T&T Tubecraft managing director, Ross Turner. “This is largely down to its user-friendly programming, fast tool changes, automatic setup and uncompromising levels of accuracy and repeatability. “Ironically, when we purchased the 100mm Unison machine back in 2015, we didn’t have a vast amount of work for it. This quickly changed, however, as we T&T Tubecraft can now achieve high quality thin wall bending even in high yield-strength alloys

gained the ability to take on new projects. The new 130mm machine will increase our capability even further, both in terms of capacity and the ability to tender for an even greater range of projects. We expect it to be of particular interest to customers in the aerospace sector.” The bigger brother of the Unison 100mm multi-stack machine, the Unison 130mm tube bender purchased by T&T Tubecraft is particularly suited to bending exotic alloys such as titanium and Inconel, as well as Super-Duplex stainless steels. Able to push bend tubes of up to 6m in length when in standard mode, it also features a hitch- feed facility, whereby the machine carriage retracts by the length of the next feed, enabling mandrel bending of tubes of up to 8.7m long. As a result of this capability, T&T Tubecraft believes that, out of all UK tube manipulation subcontractors, it may currently provide the longest bending range. Multi-stack tool holding allows the most complex of parts to be formed in one uninterrupted manufacturing cycle, while Unison’s bar code scanning system ensures that only the correct tools are installed while also configuring

The 130mm machine has been networked to T&T Tubecraft’s CAD facilities and a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for verifying bend accuracy and design conformity. The tube bender can be programmed manually or from CAD data using industry standard IGES or STEP files, while data obtained by the CMM from the first manufactured part can be used to make automatic adjustments to the machine prior to commencing a manufacturing cycle. “The all-electric architecture and automated Unibend software-controlled setup of our machines offers major advantages over hydraulic machines,” continues Ross Turner. “Bending accuracy and repeatability are improved. We achieve right-first time manufacturing for repeat sub-contract work and expect even the first bent trial component to be very close to what we are looking to achieve. “Unison’s Unibend operating software is very intuitive, meaning faster programming and training for staff. Our operators consider the Unibend control system to be exceptionally user friendly.” “It is always satisfying to receive repeat orders, especially when they are from such a well-respected company,” added Unison key account manager, Steve Haddrell. “What was particularly rewarding was the opportunity to deliver an already exceptionally capable, powerful and robust multi-radius, multi- stack machine with the additional component length to give them a real edge in the subcontractor marketplace.” T&T Tubecraft www.tubecraft.co.uk Unison www.unisonltd.com

Sharpe Products 3D robotic laser tube cutting SHARPE Products, which specialises in pipe and tube bending, laser cutting and custom fabrication services, has purchased a BLM GROUP LT-FREE laser cutting system. Built for complex, three-dimensional part profiles, the five- axis, 3kW fibre optic laser has additional features such as robotic part manipulation and dual access part loading capabilities. “While this equipment has the capacity of a standard five axis laser, the dual work area allows for loading and unloading during cutting, increasing beam-on time and efficiency,” stated Paul Krickeberg, president and CEO, Sharpe Products. “The integrated robot can also eliminate the need to manually transfer parts from fixture to fixture.” “With our current capacity, we are able to laser cut holes, or features, in tubes prior to the bending process. There are instances where, because of tolerances required or the location of the cutouts on the tube, parts require additional, more costly, post-bending operations such as machining or punching. This technology can reduce these types of steps and cut the cost of consumable tooling. Magnetic Analysis Corp NDT test systems for tubes

NDT test instruments and systems for inspecting tube, pipe, bar, and wire will be featured at Magnetic Analysis Corp and Inmar Engineering Corp’s stand at the rearranged Tube India in Mumbai. MAC’s range of Ultrasonic systems for welded and seamless steel tube will be highlighted at the event, which has been rescheduled for September. A recent online Weld Zone Test system has also been delivered to a major Indian tube producer and is already inspecting large diameter ERW tubes for hydraulic cylinders for mobile equipment. The system features MAC’s Echomac ® Ultrasonic Test Head installed after the welding operation. Designed to test 63.5 to 190mm diameter tube with wall thickness ranging from 4mm to 12.7mm at speeds up to 45m per minute, the system uses clockwise and counterclockwise UT channels to detect OD and ID longitudinal defects typically found in ERW processing. The test head is supported by a cantilevered beam that allows it to operate on the weld line for mill testing, or off-line for easy calibration for a new tube size. Individual transducer shoes can be easily exchanged for size changes in a few seconds using the quick disconnect mechanisms. A monitor displays a laser beam that must bisect the weld centre allowing the operator to quickly verify and adjust the test head with its transducer assemblies to follow the weld to achieve continuous optimal testing over a weld position of 10:00 to 2:00 o’clock. A coupling alarm alerts the operator to any loss of coupling between any

transducer and the tube caused by loss of water or improper alignment. The system is programmed with the transducer locations, and a spray marker located

down-stream automatically sprays paint onto the actual defect location to enable sorting of the cut tubes. The system also includes a Minimac ® 55 eddy current tester to detect open welds and test coupons and signal the test head to lift automatically to avoid damage to the tester. Information on the Echomac ® 25mm UT Rotary, which is designed for high performanceapplications suchas tubular product for nuclear and aerospace installations, will also be available at the booth. This full body test equipment provides 100 per cent coverage at high throughput rates on product ranging from 5 to 25mm diameter. The 630mm overall length of the Rotary allows for ease of installation when upgrading existing inspection lines. Wall thickness as thin as 0.3mm and tubes as short as 1m can be successfully tested. The local remote pulsar/receiver allows high gain but provides low susceptibility to mill electrical interference, and wide band width transformer signal coupling allows selection of any transducer frequency from 5 to 17MHz. Other features include 8,000 RPM running speed, precision test blocks and transducer holders, convenient adjustment of the transducer angle, and optimum operating safety. The 25mm Rotary joins MAC’s line of UT Rotaries, which range up to 500mm capacity. MAC’s Echomac FD-6/6A

instrumentation, is available for use with the 25mm Rotary providing outstanding inspection of ID/OD, longitudinal and transverse flaws, wall thickness and dimensional evaluation including conditions of eccentricity and ovality. The Echomac ® Model 6A holds GE Qualification for P3TF31 and P29TF82 Class A and B, typically required to meet high level quality standards for aerospace and other critical applications. Full details will also be available at the booth on the recently introduced Ultrasonic Phased Array Echomac ® PA TW for detecting weld zone defects in tube and pipe. With minimal operator interaction, tube producers can use one array to sequentially monitor scarf, evaluate laminar defects, and/or detect longitudinal OD/ID defects, typical of the welding process. Installation can be online in the hot zone after the welder, for profile and flaw detection or in a lower temperature area for flaw detection after forming and shaping. B and C scans display a real time image of the weld profile and defects, ensuring the operator is quickly alerted about issues with the scarfing process. The system includes a 5-axis robot pre- programed to move to the weld line test position, a calibration position, or quickly retract to safety when integrated signals from the mill’s PLC indicate open welds, cut outs and other conditions that could cause damage. Information on MAC’s full range of eddy current, ultrasonic and flux leakage test systems for inspecting tube, bar and wire will be available at the booth when the trade show is held in September 2021 after the March trade show was put back due to Covid-19. ESAB and Yaskawa sign global collaborative agreement for pre-engineered robotic tube welding cells development

Pre-engineered robotic welding system XCellerator Severstal awards Danieli with order for new special steel rolling mill

RUSSIAN steelmaker AO Severstal has awarded Danieli with an order for the supply of a new rolling mill for special steels to be installed in Cerepovec. The new plant will produce 1 Mtpy of 5.5 to 32mm diameter smooth wirerod and coiled bars for the engineering and automotive industries and 8 to 16mm diameter quenched rebar for construction purposes. Danieli will provide all the technological equipment, automation and advisory services and a Danieli Centro Combustion walking beam reheating furnace will bring to rolling temperature 12m long, 150mm square- billets, at a pace of 170tph. A single- strand high-speed roughing mill made of horizontal and vertical housingless stands will feed two independent wirerod lines and a garret coiler to produce the bigger diameters. The intermediate mill is composed by horizontal housingless stands while

the finishing stand group consists of cantilever stands and two separate fast- finishing blocks (six plus four passes) in order to achieve better macrostructure. Two oil-film bearing laying heads will lay wraps on a 100m cooling conveyor designed for sorbitesed process. All coils will be processed along a Sundbirsta vertical trestle system and the entire mill will be powered by

EWM AG publishes updated MIG/ MAG welding dictionary

EWM AG has published its updated EWM AG MIG/MAG welding dictionary, which is available now to download on the EWM website. With this dictionary, Germany’s largest manufacturer of arc welding technology provides a reference work that describes the welding procedure and all necessary materials, auxiliary materials and relevant settings. It also gives the reader information about the differences between the various welding machines, the special features of different materials and the benefits of new welding processes, all laid out using easy-to-understand, concrete application examples.

The MIG/MAG welding dictionary answers questions such as what shielding gases are used and how are they different? Which welding machines and arcs are available? How do I set the parameters correctly? What sort of material transfers are involved with MIG/MAG welding? How do I achieve good penetration characteristics? Significant focus on Russia as Metalube joins forces with new distribution par tners

UK LUBRICANT producer Metalube is making a drive into the Russian market by joining forces with two distributor partners: LLC Cabmash-Metiz and Seteco Ltd. LLC Cabash-Metiz will be managing and selling Metalube’s wire drawing range of products including Lubricool, Alumol and OCG, whilst Seteco will be responsible for the company’s chain oil range – Metachain. Anna Baranova, general director, Cabash-Metiz, said: “We see fantastic opportunities here in Russia for superb quality lubricants such as those produced by Metalube. The company has a strong standing within the industry and I am confident that the brand will be really well received here.” Sergei Komelkov, technical director, Seteco Ltd added: “We have a big demand in Russia for high quality chain oils particularly in the wood panelling

industry. We are confident that Metachain is the best product available for this process. We are already witnessing a good deal of interest and am confident that this will continue to grow.” Matthew Buffin, commercial manager, Metalube, added: “This is a very exciting opportunity for Metalube to work with two such well-established, leading distributors in Russia. We know that the total demand for finished lubricant products in Russia is estimated at 1.6m tonnes with industrial lubricants accounting for 45 per cent of this. It is therefore a very critical market for us where we have hoped to make inroads for some time now. Harald Scherleitner becomes new vice-president at the European Welding Association

HARALD Scherleitner, global director for sales and marketing at Fronius Business Unit Perfect Welding, has been voted in as the new vice-president by members of the European Welding Association (EWA). His appointment, which runs until 2022, will see Mr Scherleitner take a key role in shaping the umbrella organisation for the European welding technology industry. “The EWA has a significant role in advancing welding technology in Europe as well as globally, and I am delighted that I will now be able to play my part in this important work as vice-president,” said Mr Scherleitner. Sustainability is one area of concern that lies particularly close to his heart: “Energy-saving, durable, repairable and adaptable welding systems and equipment that effectively protect not only the environment but also the health of welders – these are all part of the welding technology of the future. “Digitisation is continually opening up new potential to enable more sustainable working practices. It is up to us to identify this potential and ensure it

can find its way to the factory floor and other welding environments.” Mr Scherleitner began his career at Fronius in 1994, initially acting as an area sales manager for welding technology before taking charge of the Business Unit Perfect Charging. Finally, in 2016, Mr Scherleitner returned to Fronius Perfect Welding – as head of the business unit for sales and marketing. The European Welding Association was founded in 1987 and has its headquarters in Paris, France. The trade association brings together manufacturers of welding equipment and welding consumables from across Europe and associations from the welding industry. The technical committees of the EWA are involved in the development of relevant standards and European Directives. Subsequent to the General Meeting, the EWA Management Team for the 2020/2021 financial year has been confirmed: Robert Stöckl (EWM, Germany) will take over as president, followed by vice-presidents Harald Scherleitner (Fronius, Austria), Deger

Next EuroBLECH to take place in 2022 MACK BROOKS EXHIBITIONS has announced the postponement of EuroBLECH, which was scheduled to take place at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds in Germany from 9 to 12 March 2021. The next EuroBLECH – the 26th International Sheet Metal Working Technology Exhibition, will return to its normal event cycle and run from 25 to 28 October 2022. This decision was taken in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and following conversations with all exhibitors and partners that have taken place over the past weeks and months. Uncertainties around continued travel restrictions were also a contributing factor to this decision due to the truly international character of the EuroBLECH show. Speaking about the announcement, Nicola Hamann, managing director of Mack-Brooks Exhibitions said: “Following extensive conversations with all participants we have come to the decision to return to our normal event cycle and hold the next show in its original event slot. Based on the current international developments due to the Covid-19 pandemic, covering further lockdown and travel restrictions, we believe that it is the most responsible decision at this stage to postpone. “This early announcement will hopefully allow time for the impact of Covid-19 across the world to stabilise and when safe to do so, ensure that the event can continue its critical role in bringing the global sheet metal working industry together again. By making this decision now we allow for planning security, EuroBLECH will return to its initial event schedule and will therefore be back strong in 2022.” “With the recent launch of the EuroBLECH Digital Innovation Summit we have laid the foundation stone for a hybrid approach to our EuroBLECH event, which will enable us to run a series of digital events in 2021 for the sheet metal working industry. As a result, EuroBLECH as we know it will be back for all participants in 2022, but as the industry slowly recovers in the coming year, we will offer opportunities to regularly meet, network and conduct business in a safe online format in the meantime. It was very apparent at EuroBLECH DIGITAL, that there currently is a need for the industry to get together and also discover latest innovations to kick-start their business efforts”, continued Ms Hamann. Brad Sprague joins Davis- Standard’s aftermarket group

DAVID-STANDARD has announced that Brad Sprague has joined the company as regional sales manager aftermarket in the Midwest US region. In this capacity he will be responsible for all large aftermarket sales including feedscrews, barrels, feed sections, gearboxes, conversion packages, control upgrades and extruder and equipment rebuilds for customers throughout the midwestern US. He will support all Davis-Standard product groups in this role. Mr Sprague

brings more than 27 years of experience to his position, most recently with Graham Engineering as a regional sales manager. He has previous experience with Davis-Standard as a regional manager for the pipe and profile and elastomer product groups, also serving the Midwest region. Mr Sprague is an active SPE member. Ametek Land celebrates half century anniversary of UKAS calibration laboratory AMETEK Land, a temperature

“We are very proud to be celebrating the 50 th anniversary of our UK laboratory,” explained Justin Smith, division vice- president business unit manager at AMETEK Land. “Our customers across many industries recognise the value of partnering with our UKAS-accredited laboratory, which operates to the highest international standards.” To date, the laboratory has issued over 22,000 certificates to customers around the world, including industry and research establishments, Formula 1 race teams, other calibration facilities, and national laboratories. laboratory calibrates in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) and offers a comprehensive service for the certification of infrared thermometers, thermal imagers, scanners, and blackbody sources across the range of -10°C to 2500°C (14°F to 4532°F). Mr Smith added: “By having their equipment calibrated in our laboratory, customers can be assured that their temperature measurement systems will achieve optimal operating performance, improving the accuracy of their measurement capability and meeting required national and international standards. It also means their production control systems are fully traceable, reducing risks to the business, and ensuring peace of mind. Italian steel producer Duferco commissions SMS Group to supply medium section mill

DUFERCO STEEL, located in Brescia, Italy, has placed an order with SMS group for a new medium section rolling mill. This flagship project will focus on core components of digitalisation and automation in production and logistics, and on sustainability. This new, ultra- modern rolling mill to be installed in Italy will make Duferco one of the most important centers of steel beam production in Europe. With the new mill Duferco will be able to reach a yearly output of 1.5million tons of long products. “Our main goals are to set new standards in customer service, maximise the overall process efficiency and become the best-cost producer in Europe,” says Antonio Gozzi, president of Duferco Italia Holding. “We are committed to making beam production more sustainable, meeting the highest standards in environmental protection and safety.”

SMS is going to supply the complete new medium section mill, including electrics and automation systems up to Level 2. Moreover, a SMS DataFactory will be implemented, combining the information from the product tracking system with all available data in the plant, from the sensor level up to the higher-level automation systems. In this way, a product genealogy will be created, which is the basis for digitalising the complete production process and – through the use of artificial intelligence – will be setting new benchmarks in digitalisation. Thanks to the first green Power Purchase Agreement signed by the Italian steel company, the whole power supply of the new rolling mill will be covered by renewable energy. The mill will be equipped with the latest generation of CCS (Compact Cartridge Stand) tandem mill stands,

featuring strengthened guide holders, a new chock design and the new Technological Control System TCS plus. The laser-based PROgauge light section measuring device, including the SurfTec surface defect detection system, from SMS will enable Duferco to measure the sections inline and to detect and analyse surface defects that may occur during the rolling process. Marco Asquini, CEO of SMS Group, said: “We are proud to support Duferco in becoming the benchmark for efficient production of sections in Europe.” The project is scheduled to be implemented during a period of only two years, with commissioning planned for the end of 2022. Long rolling mill revamped by Primetals Technologies at Stahlwerk Annahütte, Germany

PRIMETALS TECHNOLOGIES recent- ly finished a revamping project of the long rolling mill at Stahlwerk Annahütte Max Aicher GmbH & Co KG (Stahlwerk Annahütte) in Ainring-Hammerau, Bavaria, Germany. The project encom- passed the modernisation of the inter- mediate rolling train by replacing two ex- isting Red Ring Series 1 stands with the latest design, Red Ring Series 5 stands. These stands allow for shorter change times and offer a prolonged lifetime of wear components. Mill operation and maintenance activities are benefited. For the modernisation project, Primetals Technologies provided the engineering of process technology, as well as design services. Two Red Ring Series 5 stands RR545 in H/V configuration were installed at the intermediate train. Other equipment supplied included two stand-by stands, the retrofit of the stand lubrication

system to allow quick connection/ disconnection during stand change operations, encoder systems for gap adjustment, workshop systems for stand preparation and roll change, compatible with both Red Ring Series 1 and 5, as well as with other existing stands. In addition, the new equipment was adapted to the existing mill, in order to minimise installation time. Engineering services for other equipment, advisory services to erection and commissioning, and training services rounded off the scope. The long rolling mill at Stahlwerk Annahütte has a design production capacity of 240,000 metric tons per year. It processes square billets with dimensions of 160x160 and 178x178mm. Steel grades include carbon, quality, alloyed and non-alloyed steels. Finished products are thread and plain round bars with diameters ranging from 12 to 75mm. The original rolling mill had

been installed by former Pomini SpA (now Primetals Technologies) in 1973. The Red Ring stands Series 1 were still perfectly working, its replacement with Series 5 is intended to improve the flexibility of operation, by reducing the change times and extending the lifespan of main wear components. The history of Stahlwerk Annahütte began in 1537, when iron mining and working activities started. Since 1975, when it became part of the Max Aicher group, the company has become an important European producer of thread bars and quality bars for automotive and industry applications. It is the leading global supplier of thread bars used in pre-stressed concrete manufacturing, rock anchoring, mining, tunneling and other geotechnical applications.
