It is interesting to look at the reasons why Germany is such an engineering and manufacturing heavy-weight, not just in Europe but around the world. We also have a show feature on Tube Russia 2019, which the March magazine will be distributed at. Finally we have a very interesting, in-depth article from Michael Kelly of Allied PhotoChemical. Mr Kelly looks at the use of UV coating technology for line pipe producers in order to eliminate the problem of red rust. Next issue we have three features: tube mills & roll forming lines; handling, bundling, packaging & logistics; and wide diameter tube production. The May issue of the magazine will be distributed at Guangzhou 2019 in China, and Lamiera and Made in Steel in Italy. If you would like to submit editorial for any of these features or trade shows then the deadline is 18 March. The deadline for advertising in the May issue is 5 April. On the cover . . . The roots of EFD Induction go back to the launch in 1950 of a universal induction hardening machine by the German company Induktionserwärmung Fritz Düsseldorf GmbH (FDF). While FDF was expanding in the 1970s, an induction revolution was taking place in Norway, where engineers had figured out how to transistorise frequency converters for induction heating.

In 1981 three of those engineers founded ELVA Induksjon AS. In 1983 they unveiled the Minac range of mobile converters. Workpieces no longer had to be brought at great cost to a stationary induction heater – the heater could now go to the piece. In 1991 the managing directors of FDF and ELVA met by chance. They talked and speculated. FDF was strong in stationary induction hardening machines. ELVA was the agile innovator with a track record in finding new applications for induction heating. What if the two companies got together? In January 1996 FDF and ELVA merged to create EFD Induction. And the rest is, as they say, history.

and energy department at Baoshan Iron and Steel. In addition, Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals has entrusted Fives to design and supply two Bronx straightening machines for its Huzhou facility based in the eastern province of China. Jiuli is a private company specialising in the manufacture of stainless and high alloy piping and tubular products for a number of different industries. The company has ordered a Bronx six-roll and ten-roll machine to pro- cess high-yield, seamless, thick-walled, large-diameter tubular products. The equipment is designed using advanced technologies to withstand thick-walled stainless tube processing and deliver high levels of productivity and excellent standards of straightness. It will be delivered to China in July for installation and commissioning in Huzhou. “It’s our latest order of a Bronx machine during a succesful ten-year working relationship,” said Denny Lee (Zhengzhou Li), president of Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-Tech Metals. “Fives always stays on the top of its contractual commitments, delivering Bronx machines with outstanding pro- duction rates, longevity and excellent standards of straightening accuracy.” For both customers the Bronx six- roll straighteners ordered will be fully automatic and motorised, utilising the COMPASS system (COMPuter Aided Setting System) for automatic precision setting of all work rolls. All of the equipment is designed and pre-assembled in the UK, where the group has been designing and manufacturing Bronx straightening machines for tubular and long products for more than 76 years.

Ametek SMP promotes titanium capabilities PLYMOUTH in the south-west of England is close to the birthplace of titanium – first discovered nearly 230 years ago. In 1790, in the heart of Cornwall in the UK, hobby geologist Rev William Gregor found manaccanite ore in a stream near the village Manaccan, after which the ore was named. 1950s. In the 1960s its use expanded to commercial aerospace airframes and gas turbine engines. In the 1970s, non-aerospace applications began to develop, drawing on the material’s corrosion resistance. These non- aerospace applications now account for around 50 per cent of worldwide titanium metal consumption. and manufacture of next-generation aerospace components.

deliver products and services in a safe and sustainable manner. Kloeckner Metals UK CEO Peter Whiting commented, “Health and safety is paramount to Kloeckner and we are very proud to be the first stockholder and distributor with SCCS to conform to ISO 45001. The new standard reflects our commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment across the business. It is furthermore a testament to our team, who are continuously working hard to improve health and safety practices and well-being across our sites, which in return improves our overall business performance.” Kloeckner Metals UK Fax: +44 113 272 1689 Email: enquiries@kloeckner.com Website: www.kloecknermetalsuk.com UK-based Fine Tubes and its USA- based sister company Superior Tube produce straight and seamless tubes in Ti CP, Grades 1 and 2, Grade 5 (Ti 6Al/4V) and Grade 9 (Ti 3Al/2.5V). Both companies are experienced in the con- ditioning, welding, machining, polishing and other processes required to convert a specific grade of titanium into a prod- uct that can deal with challenging condi- tions. Fine Tubes, for example, is among the few suppliers qualified to produce the high-pressure titanium tubes used in the hydraulic systems of the Airbus A380. Hamilton Precision Metals, as a re- roller of metal strip, foil and ultra-thin foil, rolls 0.0025 to 0.01mm (0.0001" to 0.0004") precision brazing foil in various titanium alloys for use in the production of jet engine fan blades and housings. In addition, Ametek SMP in Wallingford, Connecticut, USA, manufactures titanium wire for locking collars on aircraft. Ametek Specialty Metal Products – USA Website: www.ametekmetals.com

Because of its strength, unique density and corrosion resistance, titanium has found applications in many industries. For high-quality tubing products, for example, it is often a more suitable choice than competing materials like stainless steels or super alloys. The density of titanium is about 60 per cent that of steel- or nickel-based alloys, giving significant weight savings in aerospace structures. Its tensile strength is better than that of austenitic or ferritic stainless steels. Titanium is exceptionally corrosion resistant and exceeds the resistance of stainless steels in most environments. The metal is also non- magnetic and has good heat transfer properties, with a melting point higher than steel alloys. Titanium metal was first used as a material for military aerospace in the

Ametek Specialty Metal Products (SMP) exhibited at the Farnborough International Airshow last year, taking advantage of the opportunity to promote its capabilities in manufacturing products in titanium for critical aerospace applications. SMP products range from high-purity powders and master alloys to high-precision strip, foil and wire, as well as high-performance metal tubes. The four SMP brands – Fine Tubes, Hamilton Precision Metals, Reading Alloys and Superior Tube – were represented at Farnborough. Reading Alloys was instrumental in the development of many of the titanium alloys available today, including Ti 6A/4V. Its master alloys and powder coatings are increasingly used for the development
