The July Issue Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology magazine.

July/August 2020 Vol 33 No 4

This issue we have a features on tube mills & rollforming lines. The technical article (page 62) takes an in-depth look at some less well-known facts about production using linepipe rolling mills; and we have a fascinating interview (page 45) with Mauricio Facchinetti, CEO of Topfibra. Sadly a number of important tube-related trade events have been postponed over the past few months, but the good news is that we have details of the rearranged dates within our pages. The big event of the year is of course Tube Düsseldorf and that is set to go ahead from 7-11 December. It will be good to see many of you in Germany. Some members of the tube industry that I have spoken to in the US have already re-booked their flights so that is very positive news. The forthcoming September magazine is set to be distributed as a number of big international trade shows – FABTECH 2020 in Las Vegas, USA; Tube China 2020 in Shanghai; and at EuroBLECH 2020 in Hanover, Germany as the world slowly gets back to business. If you would like to submit editorial for the September issue the deadline is 9 July. The advertising deadline is 24 July. Rory McBride – Editor in chief

bending machine

AUSTRIAN company ELB-Form has reported an increase in productivity and efficiency after ordering a new machine from Germany based Schwarze-Robitec. The fully electric multi-radius tube bending machine CNC 80 E TB MR ensures extremely short cycle times for the experts at cold and hot forming. The key to this productivity gain is Schwarze- Robitec’s intelligent NxG control system, which has meant that production time has been reduced by 20 to 40 per cent depending on the component and the desired tube geometry. According to ELB-Form, the machine meets the high requirements of its customers from the automotive and aviation industries, among others. Tube bending expert Schwarze- Robitec designed the CNC 80 E TB MR for Austrian based ELB-Form, who are using a tube bending machine with NxG control for the first time. For each bending sequence, the system automatically checks the interaction between all axes and ensures the movement sequences are optimally coordinated. This means that while a bending process is ongoing, the axes are already being prepared for the next sequences. The production time is reduced by 20 to 40 per cent depending on the component and the desired tube geometry – the more complex the geometry of the tube to be bent, the more time is saved.

such as the spool stacks and scrap handling. Acting as an all-round provider of the required services, products and software solutions, Primetals Technologies was able to complete the project in just a few months – and the commissioning in less than one month. AMAG rolling and Primetals Technologies have been working together successfully for more than 20 years on the construction, servicing and modernisation of aluminium sheet production plants in Ranshofen, Austria. The products of AMAG rolling at Ranshofen include special aluminium alloys for the aviation industry. Continuous heat treatment line no 2 is part of a highly sensitive facility for producing aluminium sheets. The sheets have to be heated in the furnace precisely to the defined target temperature within a maximum tolerance of three degrees. The coils produced are subjected to

PRIMETALS TECHNOLOGIES has modernised continuous heat treatment line no 2 at the Ranshofen plant of the aluminium producer AMAG rolling GmbH and brought it into operation on schedule. The engineering and plant construc- tion company replaced the outmoded open- and closed-loop controls for the strip transport and furnace, switchgear, cables and sensor technology, and also added control containers and hydraulic components. Protective fences and doors with access control were installed to increase personal and operational safety. The very first coil produced on the modernised plant fulfilled the required quality criteria and was therefore able to be sold. The modernisation of continuous heat treatment line no 2 covered renewal of the electrical installations, automation and many mechanical components,

special tests before acceptance. After Primetals Technologies had success- fully commissioned the modernised continuous heat treatment line no 2, the first coil produced already met these strict quality criteria.

Advances in additive manufacturing solve manufacturing challenges A NEW white paper by Lincoln Electric examines how recent breakthroughs in the field of wire arc additive manufacturing are providing aerospace, automotive, heavy industry, oil & gas and other industrial equipment manufacturers with new ways to overcome common production challenges. All industrial equipment manufacturers face challenges that can negatively impact production pipelines leading to production delays, downtime and increased costs. These challenges include malfunctioning or failing parts that are challenging to replace or difficult to repair; long lead times for castings and forgings of new parts, tooling or prototypes; high cost of materials and shipping for heavy equipment and parts; and product testing and industry regulations that cause delays and/or require redesigns or re-manufacturing of parts. “Manufacturers are under constant pressure to deliver faster, whether prototype, production or replacement parts, and recent events highlight the fragility of supply chains. Due to our advancements in additive technology, they now have an option for securing large metal parts from a trusted source in Lincoln Electric, reducing supply chain risk and lead times,” said Mark Douglass, business development manager for Lincoln Electric Additive Solutions. The white paper, ‘Addressing Production Challenges and Go-to-Market Limitations with Established Additive Manufacturing Service Providers’, examines how wire arc additive manufacturing can help large-format metal part manufacturers eliminate production bottlenecks, shorten delivery times and reduce prototype design and test cycles. The process is ideal for parts larger than a basketball and can be readily scaled to several metres. Specific advantages include the reduction in lead times from months to weeks; a greater design freedom and part consolidation; faster prototype testing and lighter weight parts and less waste.

Combi-Ventilate – turning one ventilator into multiple engineered ventilation stations

“When we are developing equipment, we listen closely to our customers in order to perfect and improve the product. This approach in our collaboration with the HSE is what has got us where we are today. This is very much designed as an attachment which can be added to any brand of ventilator. It costs a fraction of a standard ventilator and can be installed very easily into an ICU unit environment. We have made Combi- Ventilate with the same objective as we do with all our products – which is all about doing more with less,” said Mr McVicar. “We have undertaken this non- profit endeavour in order to meet the demands of the global crisis for health services around the world, namely the lack or shortage of ventilators.”

THE IRISH manufacturer Combilift has developed the Combi-Ventilate, a splitter device which turns one ventilator into multiple ventilation stations. Designed to address the requirements of medical professionals in the current Covid-19 emergency, the Combi-Ventilate was developed by a team of mechatronic and software engineers in the past five weeks and a unit is currently undergoing laboratory tests with Ger Curley, Professor of Anaesthesia & Critical Care at Royal College of Surgeon’s in Beaumont Hospital. The Combi-Ventilate uses standard pipes and fittings for easy assembly and its individual patient filters prevent cross contamination. Each patient has a dedicated screen which allows medical professionals to individually monitor their vital information. This includes live values, data on patient history

and statistics and adjustable alarm settings. Features include non-return valves, HEPA filters, flow sensors and an automatic flow control valve. Any abnormalities that occur are detected and will only trigger that specific patient’s alarm. The Combi-Ventilate has automatically adjustable flow control valves which allow the health service professional control the tidal volume to each patient electronically without having to make manual adjustments.

Bodor X260A fibre laser cutter for cleaner and more precise tube cutting

ready when the previous one is being processed. When unloading, finished parts will be automatically transferred to storage room, sparing the need to separate from leftover materials. Bodor X260A can cut tubes of up to 6,500mm length and carry a maximum of 220kg weight. The minimum length of leftover material can reach 66mm, saving as much material as possible.

The smart auto-centering chuck on Bodor X260A, which is suitable for tubes of 0.5-10mm wall thickness, has also been designed to offer outstanding control of precision and torque. With the auto-centering function, clamping tubes of the wrong size and clamping deformation for thin tubes are avoided completely. According to Bodor, users only need to put the whole bundle of tubes on the loading device, then the tubes will be automatically sorted and loaded and the next tube will be prepared This type of steel has ductility, toughness, fatigue resistance and is lighter than structural steels, which the customer is committed to using in the fastening systems for the mining industry tunnels. According to Emmedi, the silicon carbide transistors are more efficient and reliable than many other components currently used on the market, and the extremely compact footprint of the power supply minimises floor space and make it a great solution in terms of energy and space savings. As the safety of workers is becoming increasingly important and the demand of the quality of tubes used in the industries also increases, Emmedi has committed to study the different working

BODOR Laser has been working on improving the precision and efficiency for cutting tubes of low and medium thickness, in order to fulfil the cutting needs of users. On the X260A laser tube cutting machine, Bodor has applied its newly developed contour recognition technology, which adopts the photoelectric positioning method, making precise positioning possible for oval tubes and round tube and lowering cutting precision deviation to 0.15mm or less.

frequencies, the inductor design and the appropriate combination of types of impeders in the material used to manufacture the tubes. It has also examined the high water pressure (200 Bar) to which they are subjected during the process. The Emmedi group has designed and tested the equipment to meet the requirements of the customer and, in addition to the continuous control of the welding process, it is supplying a system that is designed to increase the quality and safety of the tubes and, therefore, the safety of the workers.

EMMEDI has been appointed by a European manufacturer in the production of tubes for the mining industry to supply its new EMMEDI 200 KW SiC technology equipment for the welding of high strength steel tubes (HSS).

Bending tubes using robots from transfluid ENGINEERING company transfluid, based in Schmallenberg, Germany, has been producing a ‘mobile bender’ for the past 30 years. compact tube processing”, claimed Ms Flaeper.

The bending radii are 2-2.5xD on average. Occasionally, a 3xD radius is achieved with tubes with thin walls. Another advantage is that the machine has a very compact bending head and that the tubes move in an empty space, so there are no collision points with the machine. The bending angle adjustment on the transfluid MB 642 bending machine makes it possible to produce bends with precise bending angles. It is not necessary to have a straight area between the bends, which means the complete bending geometry can be extremely compact. These tubes do not have a swivelling range either, so that very long tubes can also be processed in very tight spaces without any problems. Everything is very compact, making the machine ideal for mobile use. Trimming and cutting can also be performed directly using the machine. The burring unit can also prepare the tubes for further processing. As the tubes are usually supplied with the corresponding connections, the mobile bending machine also has an integrated tool for cutting ring pre- assembly that can fit all the standard

This universal tube bending machine produces strong results and has a quality that, in particular in the field of hydraulics tubing, can process tubes with diameters from 6 to 42mm. “What is special about our mobile bender is that it offers all the functions you need for hydraulics tubing and it only needs a very small production area of just one square metre”, explained Stefanie Flaeper, sales managing director at transfluid. The transfluid MB 642 mobile bending machine has a bending system and either a circular saw or a deburring unit can be added. Accessories for cutting ring pre- assembly and flaring complete the range of possibilities. All tubes that are used in hydraulics can be bent with this machine, like those with thin tube walls or pressure pipes with thick walls. For instance, it can also process tubes up to 42mm and wall thickness up to 4mm without any problems or even a 38x6mm tube. “With this machine you can produce extremely compact tube configurations. No other machine can achieve the same

cutting rings on the market. If it is necessary to use a flaring device instead of the cutting ring one, it is possible to switch them by hand with one single operation, making it possible to process the different types of connections without any problems. The simplicity of the transfluid bending machine means that is requires no specific training.

Solid-state tube welder from EFD Induction EFD Induction’s new Compact Weldac is aimed at those in the market for a new, efficient and easy to use solid-state tube welder. immune to coil short-circuits, caused, for example, by metal slivers getting caught between the coil and the tube. While this can destroy a MOSFET transistor, SiC transistors are not affected.

“Tube and pipe manufacturers who are in the market to replace their vacuum- tube welders with solid-state systems have even more reasons to do so now,” said global sales director of Tube & Pipe at EFD Induction, Peter Runeborg. “With its low investment cost, ease-of- use and remarkable uptime, the new Compact Weldac with SiC technology is well worth considering.” Some of the benefits are: high efficiency, weld quality, reliability, easy operation, less power consumption and more production uptime combined with lower running costs and a reduced footprint – it is no wonder we call the new Compact Weldac a small revolution. Fewer and more efficient Silicon Carbide (SiC) transistors in the new high-frequency inverter power modules makes the entire system of the Compact Weldac efficient.

“In fact, EFD Induction inverter technology is so advanced that it is possible to set the sensitivity for the Weldac to shut down when a short circuit occurs.” The Compact Weldac reiterates EFD Induction’s long-standing focus on safe and simple operation. “We have this obsession about making our machinery simple to handle and control,” said Mr Runeborg. “A high-output, industrial power-electronics system like the Compact Weldac is easy to operate, with a minimum of manual settings and other operator interferences. Coil changes are done in mere seconds, and the welder adjusts automatically to each tube dimension.”

“SiC transistors have been around for some years, but it is only lately we have found ones that have the required quality to meet the high standards of EFD Induction and our demands for required uptime in an application such as tube and pipe welding”, said Mr Runeborg. “These, however, will significantly boost tube-welding output. The new SiC transistors will run at frequencies up to 500kHz depending on tube size and customer requirements. A major advantage is that they are virtually

IMS introduces its surcon 3D Tube EXPERT in measuring systems IMS Messsysteme GmbH has introduced its latest high quality inspection tool. The 3D surface inspection system ‘surcon 3D Tube’ enables tube manufacturers to detect surface defects at a much earlier stage of the rolling process than before and to counteract them early and effectively through concrete corrective measures. IMS Messsysteme said: “A prerequisite for the economical and future-oriented production of pipes is specific knowledge of the production process. “In particular, these are the product properties after each of the typical three forming stages. Only through precise, reliable and durable measuring equipment can the ever- increasing demands on the finished product ‘tube’ in terms of uniformity and adherence to low tolerance limits be met while saving energy and raw materials, which require a high degree of process reliability.” These objectives are always the continuous recording and storage of all measured values, production parameters and system events as well as feedback of the measured values to the pre-control and/or tracking of the control equipment of the rolling units. Support is offered to the operator by targeted fault diagnosis and the high availability of the measuring system. In tube production, surface defects are often perpetuated through the complete process chain. Non-stop surface inspection from bloom to finished tube is therefore critical for the quality of the final product. “The three-dimensional information on the spatial extent of the defects enables far more reliable decisions to be made on the extent to which a surface defect can still be tolerated or whether immediate intervention in the production process is necessary. “In addition, the 100 per cent surface inspection ensures that immediate knowledge is available as to whether a detected defect occurs once, recurs several times on a tube or at the same length position from tube to tube – information that is almost impossible to determine reliably by manual inspection.”

Coating a welded area after the outside scarfing process has been completed

metal is air blown on the area to be coated (ie the welded scarfed area).  The quality of coating depends on many factors, one of the most important is related to the tube welding speed and the temperature of the welded steel bath, that must not be lower than a certain limit. Below that critical temperature the risk of false adhesion of the over metal’s layer is pretty high, and consequently the bad output of tubes with the layer’s detaching problems.  “We at MEC offer all of our customers a proper know-how to avoid such problems, along with complete support throughout our specialists and main distributors.”

from the electric-arc generator system with spray gun till CycloneAspiration and Pulsejet filtration by Cartridge elements, with CE marked and various ATEX compliant methods,” a spokesperson from MEC said. “The process is mostly in-line operated into the tube mill. It consists of creating a continuous short-circuit working condition using a pair of metal wires.” This technology results in the melting of the wires and contemporary melt

LB SIDERTECH Srl, a tube industry distributor of Metallising Equipment Co Pvt Ltd (MEC), is distributing custom made complete turnkey solutions for an important coating process in the tube industry. There are many coating processes in HF welded steel tube industry: the off-line colour coating; the in-line anti-oxidation oil coating; the off-line HDG (hot deep galvanising) process; and the gas – or the recently more popular – electric-arc spraying coating of the external scarfed area of pre- galvanised or pre-aluminised steel tubes, once the outside welded bead has been removed by mechanical trimming. After this process the over metal layer must be restored to ensure the proper initial features of such overlaid steel tubes. “We are the only company manufacturing the complete system
