Proceeding on this firm ground, the automotive services chain Kwik Fit decided it would make a unique contribution to the Queen’s 90 th birthday celebrations in May. Working under the direction of the West Country artist David Parfitt, a crew of four technicians with the Letchworth, Hertfordshire, UK-based firm devoted 280 hours to the creation of a remarkable “portrait” of the monarch, assembled from over 800 individual car components. The 11.5-foot, 255-lb piece – now on a year’s tour of the company’s centres across the United Kingdom – can be viewed on www.kwik-fit.com/queenofparts. The site also supplies particulars of the components represented: engine, wheels, interior, seating, lights, electrics and trim. The work utilises some 164 feet of cables and hoses, 125 spark plugs, 60 gaskets, 150 washers, 24 pumps, 65 feet of leads, ten headlights, six bumpers and hundreds of springs, nuts and bolts. Individual features, with their “raw materials”, include: Crown – spark plugs, indicator lenses, brake lights, chrome trim; Earrings – headlight reflectors, chromed nuts; Hair – tyres, electric leads, duct pipes, wiring loom, hoses; Skin – layered gaskets, bumpers, soft panels, water bottles, washers, air filters, bodywork, radiator grilles; Eyes – washers, control cable wreaths, water pumps; Dress – brake discs, air filters, springs, sparkplugs, mirrors, pulleys, petrol caps; Lips – hoses and brackets; and Necklace – headlights, mirrors, radiator grilles.
