Primetals modernises twin electric arc furnace PRIMETALS Technologies has won an order from China’s Baoshan Iron & Steel Co Ltd (Baosteel) to modernise a more than 20-year-old DC twin electric arc furnace at its Shanghai plant. The project involves redesigning both the upper and lower vessels and installing new anodes in each case. Improved power efficiency reduces production costs, and raw materials can be used more flexibly. It will therefore be possible in future to operate the electric arc furnace with a hot metal content of up to 90 per cent. Modernisation work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016. In 2014, the Baosteel Group’s annual steel production was more than 43 million metric tons. The company manufactures products for the domestic and international markets.

The twin electric arc furnace has a tapping weight of 150 metric tons and is part of a production line on which billets and long products are manufactured for use as structural steels. Under the modernisation project, Primetals Technologies will be engineering, manufacturing and supplying essential components. The upper vessels with their water- cooled wall panels will be completely redesigned, and the lower sections will each be equipped with a new, air- cooled FIN anode. The guaranteed anode durability is more than 1,500 melts. Primetals is also responsible for monitoring the installation and commissioning work. The twin electric arc furnace at Baosteel in Shanghai will be modernised by Primetals Technologies by the end of 2016 Hobas GRP manholes win product test IN a recent review of manhole rehabilitation products and methods by the IKT Institute (institute for underground infrastructure, Stuttgart, Germany), the Austrian company Hobas came out on top. 13 different rehabilitation systems were tested, which involved the renovation of a 5m-high concrete manhole, DN 1000. The providers were asked to re-establish the manhole’s leak-tightness and structural integrity. The individual approaches were then examined and the rehabilitated shafts exposed to long- and short-term groundwater pressure. With an overall score of ‘Good’ (1.6, German grading system from 1 to 6, with 1 being best), Hobas GRP manholes were the test winners. Hobas Engineering GmbH – Austria Website: www.hobas.com
