TPT January 2020

The January Issue Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. I have just returned from FABTECH 2019 in Chicago and I was interested to see the high quality of speakers and panels offering the latest advice on a number of fascinating subjects. The aim of the

talks is to help those attending gain knowledge of the latest practices and technology being used in the tube manufacturing industry. They explained how innovations in robotics and automation have now sparked a fourth industrial revolution. It was suggested that automation is the key to US manufacturers’ efforts in lowering the cost of production and offsetting increases in material costs. The panel explored how automation is changing the manufacturing landscape and covered the role of technology and the changing – but still vital – role of people in the future of engineering. Experts offered an optimistic perspective on the impact of robotics on human workers and the facts vs fiction of worker replacement. They discussed key challenges to implementing automation and developing a pipeline to help de-risk technology and implement it on the factory floor. Overall robots are likely to remove more tedious and dangerous tasks while still requiring the imagination and skill of experienced and skilled human workers.
