Modular, rotating gauges for high-speed dimension measurement in hot rolling mills

resulting in less wear on parts, no collector rings and no brakes. The transmission of power and signals to and from the laser heads is fully contactless. Many standard and special software features are included, such as EPM function for true section display; polygonal and asymmetric shape deviations; special functions for three- roll mills; head and tail scrap calculation; and personalised screens. Other major benefits include faster start-up, less scrap, tighter tolerances, display of true shape, suitability for hot and cold processes and QC, and trouble-free maintenance with quick and easy access to maintenance points.

ZUMBACH Electronic, based in Switzerland, has introduced a new, modular addition to its range of rotating

gauges. The new modular SMR product line offers significant advantages when it comes to the fast and accurate capture of dimensions in longitudinal and radial direction. SMR gauges rotate

continuously at 60 or 100 rpm. Up to three ODAC ® laser heads take 2,000 measurements per second and are fully synchronised. This results in up to ten complete profiles per second, which is significantly faster than previously recorded. Alternatively, the SMR can operate in static, orientable mode with 2,000 diameter dimension measurements in each direction. At 100m/s this means a set of measurements every 50mm. The mechanical concept is simple and robust,
