Permanent printing and marking on soft PVC pipes and hoses THE wear-resistant marking of products made of soft PVC, such as strands, cables, sheathed cables, pipes, hoses and profiles, presents a challenge to the cable and extrusion industry. Printer specialist Leibinger has developed an ink that is resistant to plasticisers and also prevents the transfer of printing ink to neighbouring cables. To mark materials reliably, the printer technology and the printer ink need to be well matched. To help achieve this, Leibinger develops and produces its own inks, including a special black ink for the printing of extruded products. The extruded products being considered primarily comprise polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Depending on the application, they are mixed with plasticisers, also known as softeners. After production, the printed cables are usually coiled onto reels. Due to “plasticiser migration”, an imprint or “transfer print” may appear on the neighbouring cable when it is being unwound at a later date. To prevent this, Leibinger has a specialist ink for use on PVC.

Leibinger has developed an ink for marking extruded goods

The ink was developed to adhere reliably to PVC materials for the cable marking and metre marking of extruded goods. It is resistant to plasticisers, and so prevents accidental transfer prints. With a Blue Wool Scale (BWS) ranking of eight, it also possesses high UV stability. This is particularly important, for example, when used on window spacers. In addition, the ink dries very quickly, making it suitable for high-speed applications.
