TPT September 2021

The September Issue Welcome to the latest issue of Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. This issue we have a number of articles with one unifying theme – technological innovation. They show the priceless benefits of trying to find new solutions for old problems and investing in research and development.

Rory McBride – Editor in chief

The article from Fronius International (page 86) looks at a new welding training field study, which uses VR simulators to improve quality and reduce costs when training new operators. While the new technology involved a considerable expense on behalf of Fronius it is already paying off with faster, better training and less need to purchase and waste expensive expendable welding components. The article from FD Machinery (page 84) looks at methods used in automated roll changing to help make the process safer and more efficient. Finally, we also have an interview with Georg Schulze- Duerr, CEO of 3R solutions, a company obsessed with finding new and better ways to do things I think it is fair to say. I thoroughly recommend reading Georg’s in-depth thoughts (page 66) as he discusses a host of issues concerning the tube & pipe industry. He explains how technology can transform and improve even the most established manufacturing processes – while keeping the human relationship and interaction at its core. He puts it perfectly when he says the worst thing you can say, when asked why you do something a particular way, is: “Because we have always done it that way.”
