joint. Portable machine tools can be configured as excellent counterboring units, producing accurate counterbores and smooth cut blends. Milling head attachments for portable machine tools can provide the operator with a unique solution for performing ‘machine shop’ accurate cutting, basically wherever the portable machine can be mounted. This valuable capability opens up unlimited possibilities for plant mainte- nance, ship-building and construction operations such as creating window cuts in vessels, make perpendicular cuts into existing pipe sections, and for performing non-pipe linear cuts on plate metal such as ship decks. Portable machine tools configured for milling requirements can be chain or mag-base mounted or can be operated from temporarily welded mandrels. While portable machine tools are usually used in a weld preparation role, they have also been successfully used for welding. Sometimes large assemblies such as shafts need to have bearing surfaces restored. The perfect solution would be one machine that could machine away the damaged metal and then mount a welding unit to restore the surface through weld cladding procedures. The tool could then re- machine the clad material to reproduce the original critical dimensions with a brand new surface. Hopefully, all of these suggestions will cause the reader to consider how these dynamic and versatile machines could benefit your workflow, or, what else could you be doing with your existing portable machine tools?

could you do with this machine by using optional accessories? Some companies buy a machine tool for bevelling and never consider what else they could do with it simply by pur- chasing some accessories that capital- ise upon the versatility and broad con- figurability of this type of machine: flange facing, single point machining, groov- ing, squaring (facing), coating removal, counterboring, milling and welding. There are dedicated machines out there that perform flange facing, but did you know that your beveller could be set-up as a precision flange facer with an optional flange facing kit? An optional flange facing kit provides the control of cut rate and depth of cut to produce precision record-groove finishes to restore old, leaking flanges to like-new performance and dependability. Single point machining kits provide another dimension of control being able to generate complex multi-angled bevel profiles, using standard tool bit inserts, that are ideal to reduce the amount of filler wire for faster, higher quality welds.

Grooving accessories can make your standard beveller an ideal solution for working with fitting (non-welded) piping systems often used by mechanical contractors. Squaring can be accomplished to produce a pipe end that is perfectly perpendicular to the centreline of the bore. This is ideal to finish flame cut ends, to prepare plastic pipe for thermal joining and, when used with full support pads, makes it easy to square thin wall tube for autogenous welding for processing and aerospace. OD mounted split frame lathes are ideal for marine pipeline applications where there is a need for rapid and reliable coating removal for plastic clad pipes. The lathes offer solid mounting and high power, ensuring they can deal with the extreme torque of high speed coating removal. Many welds today must be tested for integrity through NDT ultrasound and x-ray inspection procedures. This can require that pipe ends be deep counterbored on either side of the weld
