On page 30 you can read the Industry 360 column, which looks at the rise of electric vehicles, but explains that the combustion engine – and its many tube-related products – still has plenty of life left in it. It is fascinating to read how old the concept of electricity powered cars actually is. Oriol Serra of Quaker Houghton takes a look at the benefits of UV coated tubes and pipes (page 58) – a process with a number of benefits, not least the smaller footprint of the technology and the huge environmental benefits. Helmut Freiherr von Fircks from Swiss Steel Group explains the importance of the electric arc furnace as steel makers look to decarbonise the energy intensive process. In the next issue of TPT magazine we have features on cutting technology, sawing & saw blades; and handling, bundling, packaging & logistics. The Tube Products INTERNATIONAL focus will be on tube handling & logistics and aerospace tubes & pipes. The editorial deadline for the January 2025 issue of TPT is 28 November. Eggleston Steel has invested around £3mn in a trio of TRUMPF laser cutters, receiving a welcome boost in uptime and speed
Eggleston Steel chooses TRUMPF for tube and sheet laser cutting machines
with TRUMPF TruLaser 3040 and 3060 12kW fibre models, which arrived in December 2023 and January 2024. The company deploys the machines across the entire range of sheet thicknesses, from 2 to 25mm, on a daily basis. “The quality and reliability of the machines is absolutely fantastic,” said Mr Ready. “We receive very good customer feedback about our sheet profiling capabilities,” he added. In total, the ISO9001 and ISO14001 accredited business invested around £3mn in its new TRUMPF machines and has now reinstated TRUMPF as its sole laser supplier. The company cites machine uptime and quality as the major benefits of this decision, along with speed. “The TRUMPF machines cut a lot quicker than our previous laser cutters. We had to slow the speed of our previous machines to get a better cut, whereas we can run at optimal speeds with TRUMPF laser cutters. We’re profiling at least four times faster on our core thicknesses of 6-12mm. With improved cutting speeds and production efficiencies, we roll these benefits out to our customer pricing structures,” Mr Ready added.
saw us add a night shift, rent a nearby satellite facility and expand our main site.” Eggleston Steel’s first TRUMPF laser cutter was approaching the company’s five-year replacement policy. However, around the same time, an unforeseen set of circumstances prompted the business to undertake a full review of the marketplace for laser cutters. After looking elsewhere and encountering workflow problems, Eggleston Steel started its new investment programme with a TRUMPF TruLaser Tube 7000 tube laser featuring 10m infeed and 6m outfeed, the first such model in the UK. Installed during the summer of 2023, the business uses the machine to process 50 to 120mm diameter tube/box, with up to 12mm wall thickness. Although designed as a tube laser, the company also uses the machine to cut angle bar, channel sections and non-standard items. “TRUMPF have been amazing at problem-solving; they find a solution for every application,” said Mr Ready. “Tube cutting was a new service for us, but since investing in the TruLaser Tube 7000 this activity now represents 10 to 15 per cent of our business. Customers are really impressed with the cut quality.” Eggleston Steel subsequently replaced its two flat-bed laser cutters
EGGLESTON Steel, which stocks, processes and supplies a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, has returned to TRUMPF as its sole provider of CNC laser cutting machines. The company has invested around £3mn in three TRUMPF laser cutters, receiving a boost in uptime, quality and speed, the company said. With a reputation among customers for high quality manufacturing, Eggleston Steel is a family-owned company with 54 employees that help generate annual turnover of more than £13mn. Although the core business is general fabrication, Eggleston Steel serves a wide range of sectors that include architecture, construction, yellow goods, rail and aerospace. To help boost revenue, 15 years ago the company took the strategic decision to migrate steadily from its stockholding only business model towards added value processing, notably profiling. “We started with a plasma cutter and within three years added our first TRUMPF laser – a new 6kW, 4x2m CO 2 model – to deliver higher levels of precision,” said operations director John Ready. “The machine proved successful and it changed our fortunes quite dramatically. We soon introduced a second (pre-owned) TRUMPF laser to support our growth in a busy period that

“We are very pleased about the cooperation with ConPro,” said Holger Lieder, executive board at Sikora AG. “ConPro has been a leading and renowned supplier of gravimetric systems for the continuous weighing and dosing of raw materials for many years. Tube and pipe manufacturers who use our measuring devices can now intelligently combine them with ConPro’s gravimetry and benefit from the advantages.” Andreas Meyer zu Küingdorf, general manager at ConPro, added: “The partnership with Sikora gives tube and pipe manufacturers the opportunity to combine gravimetry and dimensional measuring systems. Both systems complement each other and ensure consistently high tube or pipe quality. Material and costs are also saved.” Some of the advantages include: • Combination of Sikora dimensional measuring system with the ConPro gravimetry. • Intelligent interface based on the latest industrial communication standards for continuous data exchange. • Control of the minimum wall thickness for highest tube or pipe quality as well as material and cost savings. • Integration of ConPro gravimetry with a Sikora measuring system in existing or new lines. • Intuitive display and control of the tube or pipe parameters on the Sikora Ecocontrol 6000 or (optionally) on machine operating panels.
SIKORA and ConPro have announced a strategic partnership under the slogan ‘measuring technology meets gravimetric weighing’. Tube and pipe manufacturers now benefit from the chance to directly combine measuring systems from Sikora with gravimetric systems from ConPro, which further increases efficiency and quality in tube and pipe production. The integration of both systems is made possible by a new interface developed by experts at the companies. This is based on the latest industrial communication standards and ensures seamless communication between the Sikora dimensional measuring device and the ConPro gravimetric system. During production, the measured tube or pipe parameters such as diameter, 360° wall thickness distribution and ovality are continuously compared by the Sikora measuring system. Additionally, the weight per metre can be quickly adjusted in real time with the gravimetric system, allowing for precise control of the minimum wall thickness, maximum material savings and guaranteed compliance with the product specification. The graphical integration of ConPro gravimetry into the Sikora Ecocontrol 6000 user interface enables very simple and intuitive operation. Both systems work in real time, which enables an immediate reaction to process deviations. In extrusion lines with existing ConPro gravimetry and new lines, the Sikora measuring device can be connected directly to the ConPro gravimetry via the new interface without having to go through an extruder control.

also controlled related to mill speed. The cleaning chamber has entry wipers sized according to the product in question that are easily changed for each size produced. These wipers ensure isolation between the different cleaning stages. Automatic refilling of the cleaning liquids is controlled from the central PLC. The system is able to manage both solvent and water-based cleaning solutions. The washing system ensures total removal of any residual surface contamination prior to the application of oil. This is generally for higher specification carbon steel tubes and profiles for applications like the automotive industry, but is also suitable for deep cleaning of tubes in other materials like stainless, titanium or nickel alloys for the most critical applications.
DIETRONIC has delivered a new tube cleaning system coupled with its well known Antirust corrosion protection spray unit to an Italian customer. The tube cleaner ensures a complete treatment of a tube or profile surface prior to the application of rust prevention oil. The result is a fully cleaned and treated tube directly from the mill and into storage or direct transportation. The cleaning system comprises of a multi-chamber tank, adapted according to customer specifications (space, production rates etc) where the tubes pass through four to five different cleaning stages from pre-wash through to final rinse. All cleaning liquids used are carefully controlled in terms of dilution, temperature and disposal via a pump and from the Dietronic management system. Parameters are set and stored via an operator HMI. Regulation of the volume of liquid is THE P-320 production test bench from Uniflex enables the safe and efficient final inspection of hoses. It allows manufacturers and repair service providers to pressure their hose assemblies from 2175 to 21,750psi (150 to 1500bar) to ensure that the test piece is of impeccable quality. Optional pumps for high pressure from 1500 to 4500 bar (21,750 to 65,250psi) or low pressure from 20 to 1500 bar (290 to 21750psi) can be installed. As standard, the test bench has the plug-in adapter up to 1500bar (21,750psi). To avoid adapters and save time, the P 320 can also be equipped with a quick release system, optionally up to 1500bar (21,750psi) or up to 3000bar (43,500psi). The quick clamping system makes it possible to easily prepare the hoses to be tested outside the test bench, eliminating the need for screwing in in the test bench. With internal dimensions of 1,607 x 1,260 x 2,130cm (89.4" x 55.9" x 99.4"),

the test chamber is spacious. It also holds large hose lines or drums that can only be moved with the forklift – so the test bench is also suitable for larger production. The UPP option, which can be connected to a laptop, makes it easy to record test values, and the associated protocol can be printed and saved. For more automation and IoT connectivity, users can optionally connect an industrial PC: the Siemens IPC controller with a 12" colour touch display facilitates the input of data, which is then stored in the database. Via an IoT connection, the IPC can be linked to the company server or other machines. Like all Uniflex machines and equipment, the P 320 test bench – with or without quick-release coupling tool – is delivered in the original, durable Uniflex quality. With proper maintenance and careful handling, owners of Uniflex equipment can expect a decades-long service life. Uniflex

process, the system deploys an optical sensor to scan the storage cassette, which can be up to six metres in length. An algorithm developed by Kasto processes the 3D point cloud generated by the scan. Intelligent software analyses the data to identify the location of each stock item as well as potential gripping points for the robots. Points are only considered if they allow stock to be picked up and deposited without collision. The software then optimises movement to the target position, after which the process starts anew with the next scan. The handling system communicates with the stockholder’s resource planning system to provide the right material at the right time and location if on-site processing is required, such as cutting to length by a saw. The software also directs placement of material to ensure that it is stacked in an ideal pattern
GERMAN sawing machine and storage system manufacturer Kasto has introduced an automated magnetic handling system for long stock, enabling steel stockholders to speed and simplify order picking. KASTOpick bar is available in the UK and Ireland through the group’s subsidiary in Milton Keynes – Kasto Ltd – which will supply the equipment with newly purchased storage and retrieval systems or retrofit it within existing warehouse operations. Automatically handling long stock that has been placed randomly in a cassette is challenging, as the position of each item is difficult to predict. KASTOpick bar incorporates a pair of robots that allows users to autonomously pick magnetic bright drawn or black steel material of flat, square or round cross section, both bar and tube, lying in any orientation. There is no need for users to teach in the robot movements. To start the

EWM React technology offers full control for automated tube welding
The active wire movement in the high frequency range is generated using a new EWM robot torch with a highly dynamic motor. This breaks through the usual physical limits of the short arc; the droplet transition is completely controlled. Thanks to the enormous process stability, welding speeds twice as high as with a classic short arc can be achieved, while the heat input can be reduced by up to 35 per cent. This reduces distortion to a minimum. EWM thus offers an efficient process for high-quality welding results in the application areas of cladding, joint welding and wire arc additive manufacturing. “With EWM React, we offer superior control and effectiveness in automated MIG/MAG welding compared to con- ventional processes,” said Martin Hartke, head of welding process technology at EWM.
the weld pool in a controlled manner – due to both the control of the welding voltage and welding current and the forwards and backwards movement of the wire. To accomplish this, the wire is first moved towards the weld pool at high speed while the arc torches onto the weld pool and creates a molten droplet. As soon as the wire contacts the molten metal, the droplet passes into the weld pool through a short circuit. The wire is then precisely pulled out of the weld pool by an active and dynamically controlled retraction and the arc is reignited at very low power. The combination of the quick current reduction offered by the RCC module and the controlled mechanical wire movement allows spatter-free results with unbeatable process stability.
WITH EWM React, the welding technology manufacturer based in Mündersbach, Germany is launching a new welding process. Using active wire movement, EWM’s MIG/MAG welding process provides maximum control during automated welding. With this process, the full-range supplier of welding technology has maximised process stability. Users achieve up to 100 per cent faster welding speeds and higher quality results compared to conventional short arc processes. When you combine a short arc process with digital welding process control and add a highly dynamic torch drive, the result is EWM React. This solution consists of a Titan XQ R power source with an integrated RCC module and the new React control unit. “React” stands for ‘reversing actively controlled transfer’. This describes a process in which the welding droplet passes into

inspection of the production line by inspecting the strip directly. This inspection detects lamination defects along the strip and both edges. The whole UT system is 100 per cent customisable. Not only are the number of probes and their characteristics customisable, but the entire mechanical system can also be designed to match customer requirements and the different features of the products to be inspected. After strip inspection, Sofratest provides ultrasonic inspection solutions for both on-line and off-line inspection of ERW and SAW pipes, enabling the detection of internal, external and mid-wall longitudinal and transverse defects in the weld; lamination defects in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld seam; and lamination defects in the tube body. Whether conducting in-line or off-line inspections, Sofratest ultrasonic systems are designed to accommodate the pipe features, tailored to the specific defects targeted for identification. This flexibility extends to the integration of phased array sensors into Sofratest systems, along with several distinctive mechanical features that differentiate between in-line and off line solutions. During this process, the weld can be inspected, but also the entire pipe body too. In addition to developing all its own systems, Sofratest designs its own probes for core applications. Custom-made according to customers’ needs, the defects to be detected and the specifications of the product to be inspected, these probes are designed and created in Sofratest’s French laboratory. To complement these UT systems, the engineering team develops comprehensive software packages for unrivalled inspection analysis and traceability. Each user-friendly software is dedicated to a specific application. The inspection results are displayed in real time during the process and a customisable, comprehensive inspection report is generated at the end, thanks to the production software.
