Ultrasonic inspection of steel tubes WITH more than 35 years of experience in the non-destructive testing (NDT) market, Controle Mesure Systemes (CMS) is constantly working on new innovations to offer customers eddy current and ultrasonic solutions that meet their quality control needs. The company offers tailor-made systems adaptable to all semi-finished products including tubes, bars, wires, plates, billets and rails. based on the latest technologies: eddy current, for surface/sub-surface inspection; ultrasonic, for internal volumetric inspection and dimensional measurements; or a combination of both technologies, eddy current and ultrasonic, for 100 per cent product inspection.

CMS’ turnkey solution is composed of an inspection bench with automated vertical movement to adapt to different product diameters and four motorised centring units to convey and guide the tube precisely during the inspection. Two motorised off-line tables are also installed on the bench to facilitate the change of nozzles when changing diameters. The RotoUTscan control unit is installed in the centre of the test bench. The Ultrasonic control and supervision screens are installed facing the operator in order to facilitate convenient viewing for the operator during the adjustment phases. The control cabinets as well as the filtration circuit are installed at the back of the bench on the same main chassis to guarantee a compact solution. Its RotoUTscan inspection system contains ultrasonic transducers, which rotate in immersion at a very high speed around the tubes and bars.

CMS has recently designed and manufactured a complete ultrasonic bench for the inspection of welded stainless steel tubes at a line speed of 32m/min (in this particular case: products Ø range 12mm to 40mm). It allows the detection of internal and external longitudinal and transversal defects as well as dimensional measurements. Its customers working in the nuclear industry, like many others, are being encouraged to strengthen internal quality controls. To ensure full compliance with the main international standards, such as ASTM E213 and ASTM 1016, the customers have turned to CMS to develop a tailor-made solution that took account of its production constraints.
