Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. This issue we have a technical article from Tobias Masur at transfluid Maschinenbau looking at fully automatic tube production when space is at a premium (page 60). Our case study in the Tube Products INTERNATIONAL section looks at the vital area of underwater pipe infrastructure inspection and is written by the highly qualified Joshua de Monbrun, commercial diving supervisor and technical authority at Mistras Group Inc (page 56). This issue it was good to read the welcome news of people returning in record numbers to trade events such as FABTECH and EMO. It seems nothing can replace face- to-face contact when it comes to striking deals and building relationships. It is also good to see a number of new events further connecting the world such as Tube Middle East Africa, organised by Messe Düsseldorf for the first time in association with the existing Metal & Steel Egypt event. These events are particularly useful for launching new and innovative products, notably by the likes of Mazak and Combilift as you can read elsewhere. In fact Combilift was kind enough to invite me to Ireland to see its new AI tube and pipe sideloader in action recently as part of its anniversary celebrations. You can read more on page 6. The editorial deadline for the forthcoming January 2024 issue of TPT is 8 December. If you would like to submit an article, or have any questions, you can contact me at: rory@intras.co.uk I hope you enjoy the magazine. Rory McBride – Editor in chief

INDUSTRY World’s first autonomous long-product sideloader with manual option launched

it automatically slows down and will, if necessary, stop in cases of emergency, it will then continue to drive automatically when the obstacle has cleared its safety sensor area. The enhanced adaptive safety system enables the size of the obstacle detection fields to increase or decrease as per the steer angle and speed of the truck. The natural feature navigation system is superior to traditional methods of truck navigation based on wire guidance or artificial landmarks such as reflectors. Instead, it uses the naturally occurring features in a warehouse – walls, racking and columns for example, avoiding the need to add to or change the warehouse infrastructure. Its newly developed load dimension detection system (patent pending) operates by performing a laser scan of the load to check that its length matches the task sent to the machine. Similarly, when unloading, it checks that the rack in front has sufficient free space to accept the load. Combilift CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar said: “We have deliberately not rushed into incorporating autonomous products into our portfolio. As with any new launch we have carried out extensive field tests to make sure it is fit for purpose by liaising with a number of leading customers in the metal service industry during the product development stage. “We are fortunate to have a very motivated group within our autonomous team of software and mechatronics engineers who are committed to scaling this business unit. “The Combi-AGT signals a new milestone in product development with further expansion of our autonomous range in the pipeline.”

of innovation in the global material handling sector with its wide range of customised products. The Combi AGT harnesses the very latest smart technology to meet customer demands for driverless sideloader capability. These were driven in part by safety to eliminate the presence of personnel in aisles, consistency in handling procedures and to maximise order fulfilment, while also having a backup manual mode in case of power outages or internet disruptions. Combilift’s automation team has spent three years liaising with specialist steel suppliers to identify the best specifications for the Combi-AGT. The new model, with a lift capacity of 5,000kg/11,000lbs and various lift heights, addresses the requirements of steel service centres and the metal industries, which typically handle long loads. Combilift worked in tandem with Irish Manufacturing Research during the development process to enable seamless integration with multiple client warehouse management systems. Its design is based on the electric manually operated Combi-GTE model, which has long been a very popular choice for service centres due to its ability to work efficiently in rail guided narrow aisles. The first Combi-AGT unit was supplied to Kansas, US-based Steel and Pipe Supply 18 months ago, and since then Combilift have collaborated

BLM Group introduces new Lasertube LT12 during open-house event

BLM GROUP recently held an open house at its facilities located in Levico Terme, Trento, Italy to offer customers the chance to see its technology up close and to enjoy its hospitality. Attendees gained first-hand access to the new Lasertube LT12: a fibre laser cutting system for tubes and metal profiles capable of cutting tubes from 25 to 305mm in diameter, processing range for fibre cutting that was previously missing from BLM Group’s machine portfolio. LT12 can be equipped with different laser powers and is capable of processing tubes up to 62kg/m. The structure is configured with a mandrel at the tail and a steady rest that supports the tube being cut. It is here that the user will find one of the innovations of the Lasertube system, namely interpenetration where the mandrel enters the steady rest to cut the end of the bar thereby achieving minimal waste. As with all BLM Group’s Lasertube machines, the tube is supported throughout the processing line providing precise and fast laser cutting on both small-diameter tubes and long, heavy tubes, while maintaining speed and precision over the range of processable diameters. This is a flexible system that caters to multiple sectors but is of particular interest to those industries where it is common to find open and closed profiles that can be up to 305mm in diameter. The new Lasertube system is modular

BLM Group, which produces tube processing machines, has opened the plant doors for two weeks

in the Lasertube system. The machining unit is equipped with an eight or 16 position tool magazine that allows the wear rate of each tool to be monitored. For the first time on a Lasertube from ADIGE-SYS, Active Scan has been introduced: a technology developed by BLM Group that makes it possible to auto-correct the positioning of geometries on the tubes to be cut. This is one of the most popular Active Tools – exclusive, patented technical solutions – on Lasertubes.

in both loading and unloading lengths. In fact, two sizes for loading (8.5m and 12.5m) and several sizes for unloading are available. The possibility of loading bar lengths up to 12.5m was made to elevate processing through nesting, which optimally arranges each cut on the bar, so as to make the most of the material while minimising unused bar sections. Why waste time with a semi-finished product when the process can be done directly in the Lasertube? Drill and tap is an additional device that allows drilling and tapping with the possibility of also employing FlowDrill technology directly

gapless, reliable quality control as well as automatic control. The model is characterised by its simple operation. At the push of a button, the operator immediately receives continuous and precise measured values, without pre setting the product parameters, without the influence of a coupling medium and without any calibration. The exhibited Centerwave is only one model out of a comprehensive product family offered by Sikora for the measurement of different product diameters from 32 to 3,200mm. For more than 30 years Sikora has been offering X-ray technologies for quality control and enables manufacturers a reliable inline quality control of stranded products. How to reliably measure different layers of tubes and hoses during the extrusion process is demonstrated at the Sikora booth by the X-ray measuring system X-Ray 6000 Pro in combination with the processor system Ecocontrol 6000. The 22” monitor displays the measuring values numerically as well as graphically as trend and statistical data. By default, the wall thickness is displayed at eight measuring points. In addition, an intelligent physical evaluation model determines the minimum wall thickness, for example, the available value, which optimally supports the user in controlling the process. The physical model also allows the wall thickness to be visualised over the entire circumference of the tube or hose at any point. The user selects how many points and at which position the values are to be displayed. The processor system is also used for automatic control of the line speed and extruder RPM. It guarantees the compliance with the given specifications as well as highest

AT the Fakuma trade event in October Sikora presented solutions for quality control in the hose, tube and pipe industry. The trade show appearance is in line with the motto “ideas, passion, future”, which Sikora has developed for its 50th anniversary. Visitors were able to inform themselves about future developments and talk with the Sikora experts. Sikora presented the Centerwave 6000/250 for the measurement of tubes in the diameter range from 32 to 250mm during production based on millimetre wave technology. All dimensions of the tube, such as the diameter and the wall thickness, are determined and visualised in real time over 360 degrees of the pipe circumference. The measurement data obtained enables automatic control of the

Advisory group to tackle lubrication challenges CERTAS Energy Lubricants has assembled a new UK technical advisory group to tackle industry challenges. As an example it is estimated that at any one time, around eight in ten independent garages will be using out-of spec lubricants. This results in motorists suffering from lower performance and more breakdowns, lower efficiency and more vehicle emissions. This issue is not just a challenge for the automotive industry. The wrong lubricants are often found to be used in turbines and gear oils in industrial, manufacturing and marine sectors. Cold rolling mill for rolling of ultra-thin strips FIVES, an international engineering group, has designed and supplied a cold rolling mill to enable the rolling of ultra thin strips for electrical steel, which are in high demand on the market. Cold rolling is a critical step as it is challenging to roll the strip down to minimum values without breaking it. A 20Hi cold rolling mill was proven to be the best available technology to allow steelmakers to achieve such targeted properties, especially in term of thickness and flatness. tension, advanced roll gap and strip lubrication for higher product quality (flatness and magnetic properties), special attention to fume extraction, better strip wiping efficiency and an innovative concept for flatness actuators.

The thinner the strip, the more efficient the electrical equipment, though the production of this material presents a real challenge for steelmakers as the process becomes more complex. It involves several stages, one of which is cold rolling. The latest developments on the DMS 20Hi EcoMill include increased rolling speed and strip tension

These technological features aim to reduce operating costs and increase the overall capacity of the mill, which is essential to stay ahead in the highly competitive steel market. The critical parts of the DMS 20Hi EcoMill are manufactured in industrial workshops in Europe, which guarantees high quality material and safety standards for steelmakers worldwide. Combined with Fives’ process expertise and customer support, this set of improvements enables the DMS 20Hi EcoMill to establish a new standard of performance that has never been reached before.

Fives designed its proprietary technology – DMS 20Hi EcoMill – which enables a strip to be rolled down to 0.1mm on the full width of 1,250mm. It represents a unique achievement in the cold rolling of electrical steel. The new rolling mill achieving 0.1mm rolling thickness was recently supplied to Xinyu, part of China’s Baowu Group. The mill is capable of producing 100,000 metric tons per year of high-quality NGO grades, which are mainly dedicated to high-performance electrical motors. Steele to manufacture pipe surface treatment plant in the UAE with Tecnologie Industriali

ITALIAN company Steele aims to grow internationally and, thanks to its partnership with Tecnologie Industriali in Bergamo, Italy, has achieved its first international assignment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – a complex project envisaging the construction of a tube surface treatment plant for the UAE. The contract, which has a significant innovation component, will involve Steele in the complete supply of two handling sections within the pipe degreasing and pickling process. With this partnership, two complementary companies are pooling their expertise to meet the needs of the sector. A confirmation that the ‘Steele method’ can go beyond the national market, opening new technological and business outlets. The company, founded by Giorgio Ghini, Roberto Finanzon and Fabio Marca, focuses its vision on updating its mission according to new market trends and customer needs. It was established in January 2020, specialising in the management of plant and technological supplies for the steel industry. After the start-up and initial consolidation phase, Steele is expanding the perimeter of its partners to support steelmaking plants (and others) with innovative solutions. The collaboration with Tecnologie Industriali confirms that the synergy and

convergence of design and technological excellences meets customer’s needs at a competitive cost. According to the time schedule, delivery of the plant destined for the UAE will take place in the first part of 2024. “I am very pleased with the partnership with Tecnologie Industriali and with the new contract, which is for Steele a first step into the international market,” said Giorgio Ghini, CEO of Steele. “The project for the UAE is important, in terms of engineering, supply and management, will have us involved in the coming months. It is an assignment that confirms the soundness of the Steele method and the growth and positive trend of the last few years. I want to thank Tecnologie Industriali for its engagement and for the confidence it has placed in Steele.” (From left to right): Fabio Marca – supply chain manager, Giorgio Ghini, founder and CEO, and Roberto Finanzon, founder and technical manager

Vardhman Special Steels signs order for Kocks reducing and sizing block

Kocks RSB ® with upgraded design

INDIAN steel producer Vardhman Special Steels Ltd, and rolling mill equipment supplier Friedrich Kocks GmbH & Co

KG, have signed a contract for the supply of a reducing and sizing block type RSB ® 370++/4 in 5.0 design at METEC 2023 in

Düsseldorf, Germany. The block will be part of the SBQ rolling mill in Northern India and will expand the technological possibilities in the production of special steels at this site. Vardhman is an Indian company that specialises in the production and distribution of special steels. It has become a trusted supplier for demanding processing industries. The company is based in Punjab, India and serves various industries such as engineering, automotive, tractor, bearing and allied industries. The existing rolling mill is consisting of a most modern reversing mill followed by two-high stands in H/V arrangement and is producing currently approximately 200,000 t/a SBQ in straight bars within a finished size range of Ø 20 to 90mm onto the cooling bed. The project considers the integration of a new RSB ® 370++/4 in 5.0 design as finishing block. The scope of supply includes equipment for the roll shop. The new 3-roll block enables the Indian steel producer rolling from a single pass family in the roughing and intermediate mill, significantly reducing the number of required feeders. Thanks to the unique three-roll stands, any desired finished dimension from the entire dimensional range can be rolled with a minimal number of roll sets and minimum stand changes. The setting values for motor speeds, rolls and guides, as well as gear ratios, are calculated by Kocks’ rolling configuration program Bamicon according to the desired end product. The commissioning of the RSB ® is scheduled for the end of 2024.

Tube manufacturers can benefit from using inline laser weld inspection on mills

line qualifications and therefore fewer tests (for example micrograph samples); measure geometrical features that are not possible to detect via NDT equipment; and provide a more consistent approach to setting up a mill, allowing experienced operators to better communicate mill parameters to new incoming operators. One of the biggest wastes during tube production is scrap generation. This can lead to significant costs for a tube fabricator. Sometimes, small changes in the scrap rate can result in a tube mill becoming much more profitable. By implementing an inline laser weld inspection system, fabricators can gain an advantage because it provides instantaneous feedback to operators of potential defects, reducing time to respond to defects/issues and therefore scrap rate; improves changeover setup time – no need to run as much product to dial in the process; and reduce set up time because production equipment can be set up faster and operate more efficiently. By reducing the amount of set up time between production runs, there is more time for production. Users can also identify intermittent, hard to detect defects such as strip buckle in weld, scarf tool depth problems or identifying potential scarf tool chatter that cannot be seen unless 100 per cent of the tube is inspected. It also catches defects earlier in the manufacturing process avoiding detection later in the process that could cause product returns or rework. In these days of heightened competition, fabricators are always looking for a competitive edge. Inline laser weld inspection systems, such as the WI2200 from Xiris, are able to deliver immediate benefits to the tube fabricator once installed.

common injuries to operators; and provide magnified, real time visuals of the weld zone without operators having to enter the hazardous area or encroaching on the running tube mill. Productivity and quality is on every fabricator’s mind as they try to reduce costs. By implementing an inline laser weld inspection system, fabricators can reap quick benefits; provide operators with an early warning when a change occurs in the weld zone; provide automated alerts for any changes in the forming or welding process; provide earlier detection of potential quality issues in the weld right at weld box, rather than at end of line where operator may normally work; detect small variances in thin-walled tubing that are traditionally difficult to detect by operator; and reduces mill downtime. When manufacturing processes get out of control, common trial and error solutions typically prolong the time needed to correct the process. Users of inline laser weld inspection can reduce cost of lab time because there are fewer

INLINE laser weld inspection on tube mills provides numerous benefits for fabricators and tube mill operators. In this article Xiris Automation explores three significant advantages that can be achieved by using an inline laser weld inspection system to measure the weld bead geometry of a tube mill. Workers on tube mills face numerous hazards – by implementing an inline laser weld inspection system, fabricators can improve the health and safety of staff because such a system can automate measurement tasks that operators traditionally have to perform. So installing the system can: remove operators from exposure to various hazards that exist in and around a tube mill, including hot or molten metal, hazardous materials and substances, moving heavy equipment, rotating machine parts or electrical hazards; reduce the need for operators to reach in to the tube mill to measure or adjust running equipment; avoid operators using their fingers to feel mismatch or step left on the scarfing bead, reducing
