Fibre laser flying orbital cut-off to help reduce operating costs for tube producers By Luca Ferraguti, product manager, Fives OTO SpA Welding knowledge par t 6: monitoring weld purge gas while working on tubes and pipes By Michael Fletcher, PhD Metallurgy, Delta Consultants

The November Issue Welcome to the latest issue of

November/December 2021 Vol 34 No 6

Tube & Pipe Technology magazine. This issue we have four in-depth articles from some of the leading experts in the industry, including regular writers Luca Ferraguti, product manager, Fives OTO SpA;

Rory McBride – Editor in chief

Michael Fletcher, PhD Metallurgy, Delta Consultants on behalf of HFT; and Barry Rust, marketing manager energy & sustainability, Tata Steel. Reading the features, which cover diverse areas such as fibre laser flying orbital cut-offs and the monitoring of weld purge gases, I was struck by what a fundamental part the tube products and tube and pipe machinery that are discussed play in our everyday lives. In the Danfoss Power Solutions article, for example, written by Gabriella Paranyi, EMEA marketing communication manager at the company, she discusses how the design engineer must think about the potential for a hydraulic tube- fitting system to retain its functionality even after a torpedo strike when used in defence applications. When someone describes an engineering product as leak free, we all take it for granted, but it really can be a matter of life or death. The Tata Steel article is also fascinating in that it offers such an inspiring philosophy. During the recent disruption around the world, caused mainly by Covid-19, the company has seized the opportunity to refine and improve many of its processes and also to research areas of improvement that it usually would not have time to look at in such depth. It has offered a golden opportunity to think about product development, leading to a number of exciting innovations that will be of great assistance to its customers.

real-time direct connection from ERP to machinery, gathers all information in one database and optimises work orders and priorities,” said Francesco Cazzola, automation sales engineer at Fives OTO SpA – systems division, a subsidiary of Fives Group, during the latest modules presentation. The interactivity offered to customers during the event immediately led to new orders for steel and tube manufacturers. In addition, new features on production monitoring raised during the interaction with customers have been taken into account to develop future modules.

FIVES Group recently held an exclusive open house week event to showcase OTOMES, a flexible and modular manu- facturing execution system for steel and tube manufacturers, in Sovizzo, Northern Italy. The showroom was equipped with a complete OTOMES system, composed of hardware stations and software modules, which allowed customers to experience direct benefits from a fully integrated manufacturing execution system. The Open House was held in a hybrid format: in person for local steel manufacturers and online for customers from Europe, as well as North and South America. “Thanks to its modularity and flexibility, OTOMES allows easy interfacing with third parties systems and can be tailored to any customer’s needs. George A Mitchell Company contracted to supply push pointer for cold drawing copper tube manufacturer

shipped its first 33/50,000lb, four die in-line hydraulic push pointer in 1984. Mitchell has produced more than 90 in- line push pointers of various capacities and number of dies over the last 58 years of business. Mitchell also recently delivered a 12,500lb three die in-line push pointer for aluminium tubes; a 50,000lb two die vertical push pointer and a 50,000lb hydraulic cylinder draw bench for Nitinol (nickel-titanium) tubing; a variable wall automotive axle tube extruding and end forming line; a 50,000lb five die rotary hydraulic push pointer for copper tubes; and a 150,000lb tube end forming machine for construction pilings.

GEORGE A Mitchell Company, based in Ohio, US, has been contracted to supply a 33/50,000lb four die in-line hydraulic push pointer for a North American man- ufacturer of cold drawn copper tubes for the plumbing, refrigeration, medical and industrial markets. This is one of the fastest push pointers that Mitchell has designed and is able to produce a 6" point length with a four die reduction in just 14 seconds. The multiple die reduction allows the tube to be push pointed once, and then drawn multiple times without the need to repoint between draw passes. Mitchell developed hydraulic push pointing more than 50 years ago, and

they will not need to make a heavy up-front investment in order to use the optimum technologies for each project, whereas they might otherwise purchase a welding machine that is perfect for one contract but sub-optimal for subsequent contracts. Hiring equipment often makes good financial sense because customers pay for actual use and not equipment ownership. Hiring minimises overall maintenance and repair costs, as well as helping to reduce loss of profits due to downtime because rental companies are responsible for keeping the equipment in good working order. ESAB equipment in the fleet includes the latest technologies, and packages can be customised for specific job requirements. A sample of the products available for hire include: • Renegade ES300i, an inverter- based MMA/TIG machine that offers extreme power in a compact format. Designed for welding in the field, it weighs 13.61kg, measures 320 x 198 x 460mm and produces a top output of 300 amps at 40 per cent duty cycle. Easy-to-grab front, rear and top handles give the operator maximum flexibility for lifting the machine. Operators can easily pass obstacles, climb stairs, pass through manholes and lift the unit onto racks.

ESAB has launched a partnership with rental companies throughout Europe allowing construction companies, fabricators and others to gain immediate access to metalworking equipment. The initial roll out includes rental partners in France, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Portugal and UK. ESAB equipment available for hire includes a range of ESAB’s most innovative equipment with outputs for MMA, TIG, MIG/MAG, flux cored, multi-process welding, gouging and manual plasma cutting. Whether customers need a welding machine for a week or for several months, they can now hire what they want from a rental outlet without having to purchase equipment outright, freeing up working capital. ESAB partners can also supply the necessary filler metals, torches, PPE and accessories, so customers can one-stop-shop for their short- and medium-term welding requirements. ESAB equipment in the rental fleet includes some of the industry’s most compact, portable, powerful, productive and energy efficient welding and cutting power sources, the company said. When end-users know that they have quick access to state-of-the-art equipment, they can tender for more work. Should they win the contract,

down to a size of 50µm and highlights contamination in colour on the monitor image and in parallel via a projector on the sample carrier. Sikora also presented the Centerwave 6000, which is based on millimetre wave technology and measures the diameter, ovality, wall thickness, inner profile as well as sagging of the pipe. The measuring method does not require any coupling media or calibration and is free from influences such as temperature. As well as the X-RAY 6000 PRO, an X-ray based system that measures the wall thickness, eccentricity, inner and outer diameter and ovality of tubes and hoses from 0.65mm diameter was displayed. The thickness of up to three different material layers is measured. The diameter measuring systems, the Laser Series 2000 and 6000 were also available at the show.

MEASURING and control technology company Sikora presented its latest measuring technologies at the recent Fakuma, the international trade fair for plastics processing, which took place in Friedrichshafen, Germany in October. Sikora presented its measuring and control technologies for the tube, hose and pipe industry as well as online and offline systems for the inspection, sorting and analysis of plastic pellets. The company offered customers free live material tests from the Purity Concept V, which is used for offline laboratory testing and random sample inspection. Customers were invited to bring small pellet samples to the booth to have them tested. The automated light table inspects the test material placed on a sample tray within a few seconds by using a colour camera and evaluates the image recordings. Metalube cuts emissions and fur ther commits to a carbon neutral and offsetting policy

The aim is to continue with tree planting while actively reducing the carbon footprint within the organisation through several efficiency projects. At the end of 2019, with the help of a resource efficiency advisor and an energy efficiency grant, the company installed a new steam boiler that has improved efficiency by providing steam and heat for its manufacturing process. The project has delivered an estimated reduction of CO 2 emissions by 73 tonnes per year. In addition, it has installed a 50kW solar panel system and has switched from heating barrels with electric heat jackets to a more efficient gas-powered ‘hot box’. Linde Severstal ships third coil wound head exchanger for Gazprom’s Amurskiy GPP

for the customer’s process needs, including specific thermal and hydraulic characteristics. The materials are selected to meet a range of operating temperatures and corrosion resistance requirements. The CWHEs for the Amurskiy GPP (hydrogen reactor preheaters) are designed for preheating and subsequent cooling of a nitrogen-helium mixture and are one of the main components of the technological chain of helium production. The CWHEs weigh 52.4 tons, the shell diameter is 1.8m, the length is 15.77m, the thermal capacity is 8.5MW and the bundle consists of 480 tubes.

including the production and supply of metal products manufactured by Severstal’s assets. Linde Severstal’s heat exchange equipment forms the basis for Severstal’s unique proposition for the construction of LNG plants.” The heat exchangers for the AGPP were the first products to result from Linde’s localisation in Russia. All technical stages, including the winding of tubes, final assembly of the CWHE and the testing of finished products, were completed with domestic companies at the production site in St. Petersburg. During the process of manufacture of the CWHEs, the company procured an increasing share of locally produced parts. All of the main equipment components (tubes, mandrel, shell) for the manufacture of the second and third CWHEs were produced in Russia. Each CWHE is designed specifically

LINDE SEVERSTAL, a joint venture between Severstal and Linde, has shipped the final coil wound heat exchanger (CWHE) for theAmurskiy gas processing plant. The first two CWHEs were shipped in 2018 and 2019. CWHEs are used in helium production at the units for extraction, liquefaction and filling of this valuable gas at the AGPP. They are required for heat recovery from the nitrogen-helium mixture. The first of the three CWHEs are already in operation. Each has a capacity of 20 million tons of helium per year. Dmitry Goroshkov, Severstal’s director of energy companies, said: “Severstal’s participation in the project is an example of the company’s new positioning as a supplier of integrated solutions tailored to meet customer requirements. Largest Combilift C-Series forklift delivered to UK

COMBILIFT has delivered its largest multidirectional forklift to come off its production lines so far to modular data centre manufacturer BladeRoom. The 30t capacity C30,000 truck is now in operation at BladeRoom’s factory in Gloucestershire, UK where it is ensuring the efficient handling of components for its server rooms, as well as the finished products, which are comparable in size to shipping containers and can weigh up to 19 tonnes at 1,200mm load centres. “The initial challenge for BladeRoom was how to easily, quickly and safelymanoeuvre these large loads in and around the site,” said Rob Perry of HFT Forklifts Ltd (Hereford), BladeRoom’s MHE consultants and Combilift’s dealership in the area. “Fixed cranes would have been too inflexible, and the sheer size of a counterbalance forklift would have taken up far too much space in the manufacturing area. Following the successful operation of the C25,000 over the years and the growing size and weight of the data centres, BladeRoom decided to scale up its newest Combilift.” This is a “second first” for BladeRoom, as it ordered a 25t C25,000 model in 2010, which was at the time the largest C-Series that Combilift had built. This is still in operation at the Mitcheldean factory, along with a number of other Combilift machines of varying load capacities, which handle raw materials such as RSJs and roof structures. BladeRoom’s data centres incorporate computer fluid dynamics to extract the maximum amount of heat with the minimum use of mechanical cooling for a highly efficient cooling system. These pre-engineered, factory built, energy efficient data centres are fully fitted out for immediate use and supplied within a much shorter time frame than that for traditional structures. This minimises customers’ capital outlay and offers the lowest possible operational costs. The C30,000 measures around 5m x 5m, has a wheelbase of 3,725mm and is fitted with a John Deere Diesel 127 kW (170HP) engine, and also incorporates customised features which enable the safe and stable lifting and transportation of BladeRoom’s oversized loads. These include four cameras (one of which is a reversing camera), with two camera monitors in the cab, red danger zone lights and a tilt indicator in the cab display. “It’s a very impressive piece of machinery”, said Mr Perry. “In spite of its size, its 4-way ability enables it to move easily around the manufacturing facility. We are very proud of the fact that HFT was instrumental in supplying the largest Combilift C-Series model, not just in the UK, but worldwide.”

Italian machine tool and tube manufacturing industries register a strong 2021 recovery

The outcome was due both to the reduction of manufactur- ers’ deliveries on the domestic market, down by 20.3 per cent to €2,321mn, and by the downturn of exports, which amounted to €2,861mn or 20.5 per cent less than in the previous year. In 2020, the main export markets for the Italian product offer- ing were the US (€374mn, -11.3 per cent), Germany (€289mn -23.1 per cent), China (€224mn, -26.1 per cent), France (€158mn -32.2 per cent), Poland (€143mn euro, -17.2 per cent), Turkey (€10mn, +29 per cent), Russia (€100mn euro, -16 per cent), Spain (€95mn, -34.1 per cent). In 2020, the Italian machine tool consumption collapsed by 26.6 per cent to €3,561mn, continuing the negative trend started in 2019. The year 2021 is having a completely different trend, showing signs of a strong recovery since the first months. Based on the forecasts elaborated by the Economic Studies Department & Business Culture of UCIMU, the output of machine tools, robots and automation systems should grow by 10.9 per cent to €5.7bn. Exports should attain €3.1bn euro – 9.4 per cent more than in the previous year. Consumption should also increase, almost reaching €4bn, corresponding to a 10.9 per cent rise versus 2020. The dynamism of Italian demand should drive the deliveries of manufacturers, expected to go up to 2.6bn euro (+12.7 per cent), and imports, which should amount to 1.3bn euro (+7.6 per cent). In order to understand the climate of trust arisen in these first months of the year, we can observe the index of orders in the first half year of 2021, elaborated by the Economic Studies Department & Business Culture of UCIMU. The index registers the collection of orders in the domestic and foreign markets by Italian manufacturers. Considering the manufacturing lead time of machines, the acquisition of these orders will reasonably be “calculated” in the output/turnover of 2022. In the first half year of 2021, the index of orders highlighted an 88.2 per cent upturn. This result was due to the good performances recorded by the manufacturers both in the domestic and in the foreign markets. In particular, domestic orders grew by 238 per cent compared with the period January-June 2020; foreign orders reported a 57.5 per cent upturn versus the first half year of 2020. This really positive data are attesting to the restored climate of trust, which the Italian enterprises of the sector are increasingly experiencing as the months go by. This said, the increases seem so significant, also because they are compared with the period January-June 2020, which, besides the general activity reduction owing to the pandemic, includes a whole month (April) of complete stop in business activities due to the Covid lockdown. Barbara Colombo, president of Ucimu-sistemi per Produrre, stated: “The final data of 2020 are a clear testimony to the effects of this very serious pandemic and unexpected public health emergency, but it is evident that the year closed with results above our initial expectations.”

IN 2020, the Italian manufacturing industry of machine tools, robots and automation systems reported a considerable fall of all main economic indicators. However, it was able to maintain the positions gained in the international rankings of the sector, where it confirmed its fourth place among manufacturing countries and among exporting countries and its fifth place in the ranking of consumer countries, as a testimony to the importance of the Italian market in the international arena. The year 2021 is so far showing a different trend, confirming the recovery of business activity, both in Italy and abroad, since the first months, as highlighted by the data regarding the index of orders in the first half year 2021 and based on the forecasts for the year end. Heavily hit by the public health emergency outbreak in the first months of the year, the Italian industry of the sector experienced a strong downturn of all main economic indicators in 2020. According to the final data processed by the Economic Studies Department & Business Culture of UCIMU, in 2020, the output of machine tools, robots and automation systems reached €5,182mn, recording a 20.4 per cent fall versus 2019.
