ARTICLE: ‘Reading the chips’ to gain valuable process information while cutting tubes – par t 2 By Christian Mayrhofer, R&D – Advanced Machine & Engineering/AMSAW
The good news is that many cities in China are reporting no new infections, which perhaps gives the rest of the world some small positive insight into a future where things can return to normality and greater safe social interaction. Interestingly, from a survey of 6,000 shippers across China, over 50 per cent report that they are back to full production, and in some provinces, levels are over 90 per cent. Local transport and port terminals are also getting back to normal, with far fewer vessel cancellations. The story is increasingly the same across China. I have also been reading positive stories from Germany about a dramatic fall in infection rates following extensive testing and tracing so let us hope we can all get through this crisis sooner rather than later. We are determined to carry on promoting the tube machinery industry throughout this period, so if you have any stories or updates then please send them to me at: rory@intras.co.uk The whole team sends its best wishes to all of our readers. Stay safe and I hope you enjoy the magazine.

Sikora awarded global market leader – future champion 2020 recognition
is an excellent motivation to continue and further expand our commitment.” The annually updated list of the ‘global market leaders – future champions’ in Germany is based on an objective and transparent selection process. According to the index, global market leaders are active worldwide and are successful companies with mostly leading technologies and under family management. They show the largest or second largest market share in their segment. Their annual turnover is between five and 50 million euros of which at least 40 per cent have been generated abroad. Furthermore, ‘future champions’ are active on at least three continents. All of these criteria have been comfortably fulfilled by Sikora.
SIKORA, a manufacturer and global supplier of innovative measuring, con- trol, inspection and sorting technol- ogy, has been listed as “global market leader – future champion 2020”. The award is based on the ‘global market leader index’ of the Henri B Meier Entrepreneur School of the University of St Gallen and the Academy of German Global Market Leaders (ADWM). The German company has been on the list of global market leaders since 2016. Sikora’s CEO, Dr Christian Frank, said: “We are delighted to receive this award as it cannot be taken for granted. To be rated among the global market leaders confirms the course our company is taking. The development of future-oriented technologies, the diversification into new markets, our international network and our long-standing experience create the foundation for successful growth.”

World premiere of EMAG’s in-process non-contact thread measuring system
Another advantage provided by this method is the detection of insert wear, allowing optimal insert changes to be performed, reducing tool costs. This also avoids undesirable downtimes due to worn tools. EMAG has been supplying flexible machine concepts and comprehensive systems for the manufacturing of pipe ends, couplings, tool joints and other oilfield components for several decades. Complete cells including machines, robots, measuring systems and marking units are all directly supplied by EMAG. By acquiring all of the systems from a single source, EMAG can permanently optimise your process chains – not only for thread cutting, but also upstream and downstream processes. EMAG uses innovative development methods, such as the digital twins, so that the manufacturing process can be simulated and then adjusted. Amachine system that meets all of the demands for the fastidious machining operation involved in the production of couplings has been developed based on this methodology: the VLC 500 CM. With its extremely high range of diameters from 2 3 / 8 " to 13 3 / 8 " and a maximum coupling length of 400mm (16"), the VLC 500 CM covers an enormous range in coupling production and can be implemented with a large amount of flexibility. The VLC 500 CM also stands out for its high productivity and powerful drives. With its modular structure, the machine can be adapted to perform a variety of machining tasks. The proven pick-up process is used to automatically load and unload the machine, and the dynamic axes further ensure minimal non-productive times. The Austrian company, voestalpine, already uses the machine. Peter Winkler, operations manager of the threading departments at voestalpine Tubulars GmbH & Co KG, said: “The VLC 500 CM combines exceptional machining performance with precision. This has opened up new opportunities for us in the production of premium Oz CTG connections.” EMAG Leipzig Maschinenfabrik GmbH www.emag.com
ACCORDING to the 2018 energy study by the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), with a share of 30.5 per cent of the world’s primary energy consumption, oil remains the most important source of energy. However, global trade restrictions complicate the extraction and importation of this ‘black gold’. China, for example, is required to extract its own oil in order to meet its domestic demand. China’s hunger for energy pushes the country to drill for oil at record depths – 8,875m (29,118ft) below ground, which is lower than Mount Everest is tall. The continued push to drill deeper set high requirements on the quality and type of premium grade threads found on conveying and ascending pipes, and the corresponding couplings. The need for measuring system is also critical in order to minimise errors. To meet this demand, EMAG has created a patented system that measures the thread connections of pipes and couplings with no contact and is performed completely autonomously. Manually measuring thread and sealing geometries after cutting threads on pipe ends and couplings is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. However, the measuring process is essential due to the growing requirements on premium threads.
The thread measuring system
Using the patented method developed by EMAG Leipzig for the first time the geometries of pipe and coupling threads can now be measured without contact. The contactless optical measuring system does not require any labour and can be used autonomously or integrated into a complete process chain. The new system ensures constant measurement accuracy with the shortest possible measuring times. Once the measurements are taken, feedback is directed right back to the machine’s CNC control unit, allowing tool corrections to be made automatically and immediately during the machining process. This error-minimising system measures all thread types known today (API and premium threads), which allows for the complete elimination of the manual measurement process.

be supplied by Sandvik as part of the Sandvik-Tenaris Alliance Agreement. In many parts of Abu Dhabi, the well environments are extremely corrosive, making requirements for CRA materials necessary. For this award, Sandvik will be supplying primarily Sanicro ® 28 (UNS N08028) in dimensions from 3½" to 7" outer diameter, which is a high-alloy multi-purpose austenitic stainless steel for service in highly corrosive conditions. According to Sandvik, it has seen an increase in the demand for high corrosion resistant alloys from customers globally, as operators look to improve lifetime cycles and safety in both existing and new systems.
SANDVIK, a developer and producer of advanced stainless steels, special alloys, titanium and other high-performance materials, has entered into a long- term agreement with Tenaris to supply oil country tubular goods following its award from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) last year. ADNOC awarded Tenaris a long-term contract for the provision of tubulars and Rig Direct ® services over the next five years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Per Olsson-Artberger, global product manager OCTG, Sandvik, said: “Being involved in this award, which is one of the world’s largest in this category, further showcases our expertise and ability to produce high-quality products that meet various challenges around the world. We are very excited to be working once again with Tenaris to support ADNOC’s activities in the UAE and look forward to delivering materials that contribute to
high productivity and cost-efficiency in this ever-evolving industry.” The award forms part of an initiative by ADNOC to secure smart procurement solutions that add value to its upstream oil and gas drilling business and promote in-country investment and service provision. It includes the supply of a full array of steel grades and connections, including Dopeless ® technology, to support ADNOC’s onshore and offshore E&P expansion projects. The award includes a relevant portion of Corrosion Resistant Alloy materials, which will
