Dry multi-test section for hot- rolled, semi-finished products NON-destructive testing (NDT) of semi-finished products combining
electromagnetic methods and methods using water, like conventional ultrasonic testing, can lead to corrosion and contamination problems. In order to eliminate these kinds of problems, Institut Dr Foerster GmbH & Co KG has developed the Circoson WT, an ultrasonic test system that operates without any coupling agent. Dr Rainer Sailer, head of sales and marketing at Institut Dr Foerster, is aware of these complications: “Water- coupled instruments in test sections that include electromagnetic methods are always a disturbing factor. “Not only does water form corrosion on high-precision mechanical com- ponents, but combined with scale, which is always present on the hot- rolled surface of pipes and tubes, it will lead to a problematic pollution of the whole test section. These maintenance issues lead to increased downtime and lost production. Drying the test material is another challenge, since it is very difficult to completely remove moisture from the inside of a tube or pipe.” Foerster’s development and design of the Circoson WT eliminates downtime associated with water contamination, as the Circoson WT enables the set-up of a completely dry test section. Combined with the Rotomat/ Transomat, which detect longitudinal and transversal surface defects on the outer and inner diameter of the pipe, the Circoson WT adds the capability of wall thickness measurements and detection of laminations.

this testing. With the development and introduction of the Circoson WT, this gap in the Foerster product range has been filled. The Circoson WT can be integrated into a completely dry multi- test section for tubes of a diameter up to 430mm (17"). Institut Dr Foerster GmbH & Co KG – Germany Fax: +49 7121 140 488
“With the wall thickness measurement, Foerster is now offering an instrument that can perform a test which is required by many international standards, like API-standards for OCTG,” said Dr Sailer. “The Circoson WT complies with all those standards performing an extensive wall scan producing results that are as precise of those of water- coupled systems.” Foerster has previously had to rely on third-party suppliers to integrate
