Weld overlay cladding protection for clamp connectors
Patented metal-cored wires to reduce rework and cleanup Hobart Brothers, USA, offers a range of Tri-Mark ® Metalloy Vantage ™ and Metalloy Vantage Ni1 gas-shielded metal-cored wires. Designed to help lower overall welding costs, the Vantage wires include patented technology that reduces silicon island formation. The wire produces weld bead toe lines that are almost completely free of silicon deposits. The Vantage wire is ideal for single- or multi- pass welding on carbon steel applications, including those in the railcar, automotive, heavy equipment manufacturing, and general fabrication industries. The Vantage Ni1 wire is designed for welding nickel- molybdenum steel. It particularly excels on applications that require higher toughness when joining HSLA (high strength low alloy) or weathering steels where colour match is not necessary. The weld overlay cladding services of Arc Energy Resources, UK, were recently called into action to apply a protective coating of corrosion resistant alloy to eight of what are claimed to be the world’s largest pipeline clamp connectors. Vector International supplied these clamp connectors to two of the world’s largest LNG developments – Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4. Combined, they are expected to generate approximately 2.8 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. Among the equipment specified for two wellhead platforms, are hundreds of Techlok clamp connectors from Vector International. The connectors were specified for being compact, lightweight and leak-free in critical applications. A number of these connectors also needed the added protection of a special alloy 625 corrosion proof protection, which is applied by weld overlay cladding. For many years, Vector International has used the expertise of Arc Energy Resources
Ltd to carry out weld overlay cladding on Techlok connectors for projects of this type. Mr Gary Walford of Vector explains, “We also supplied 26 ″ and 12 ″ connectors to Qatargas 3 and 4 but we have never manufactured anything as big as the 42 ″ connector before. The sheer size of the connectors made this cladding operation special. The fact that we had to apply our usual quality standards to such a large piece of equipment also meant that it was a very technical project for us and for Arc Energy.” Also, due to the size and the tight tolerances specified it was decided to stress relieve the connectors after weld overlay cladding. Even with items this large, Arc Energy was able to carry out the post weld heat treatment in one of its own calibrated furnaces. Arc Energy Resources – UK Fax : +44 1453 823623
