New overlay welding strip claims to reduce welding time by half

Sandvik, Sweden, has introduced a unique, new welding strip called Sandvik 24.29.5.LCu for overlay welding. This welding strip is claimed to significantly improve welding productivity, reducing the welding time by half. The new overlay material is suitable for oil and gas applications, such as pipe and tube, heat exchangers as well as chemical plant and vessel repair. It is both quick and easy to use and provides an ideal overlay. Traditionally, 904L overlay welding is carried out with a double pass weld. Use of the new Sandvik material allows the required grade

to be reached with one weld, cutting down on previous operational time by around 100 per cent, while achieving the required material grade. “Not only do customers save on the operational time taken to complete the weld, but they also save on material usage,” explained Mr Linus Svensson of Sandvik. “In addition, a standard flux can be used for the weld, rather than a more expensive, special flux.” The new welding strip is available in coils, 30, 60 or 90mm wide by 0.5mm thick. Designed for use with corrosion resistant

high-alloy austenitic stainless steels and nickel alloys, the welding strip gives a weld overlay that has good resistance to corrosion from phosphoric and sulphuric acid and seawater. Sandvik is one of the largest producers of stainless steel welding strip in the world. The company’s ongoing research and development programme ensures the introduction of new, time saving materials, consumables and techniques for welding. The company offers high frequency longitudinal welding plants for tube obtained from cold and hot rolled steel strips. A highlight of the Elestar range are the medium frequency bright annealing plants that allow the heating of TIG welded tubes (BA) at a temperature of 1,100°C, followed by a cooling process that brings the final temperature down to 50-100°C. The whole in-line process is run in a protective atmosphere (hydrogen). Elestar is also able to supply all the accessories used as complementary application for induction heating plants. Elestar products enable the welding or heating of a wide range of tubes in aluminium, ferritic and austenitic stainless steel, copper and brass.
