The benefits of through- punching over single- wall punching FRIEDRICH PETIG builds tube punching machines that can through-punch any tube – whether rectangular, square or round. Typical users of Petig tube punching machines are the manufacturers of shelf and storage systems, store fittings, fences, horse-boxes and cow sheds, fence systems and ladders, steel furniture and cable ducts, railings, stairs, scaffolding, steel structures and light metal work. Tube through-punching involves using the punching die to hole the top tube wall and the cutting – which is now the die extension – to punch the lower tube wall. The piece punched out is virtually used as a cutter. In so doing, the cutting guide in the expansion die and die holder must be extremely tight to stop the cutting from shifting. All punched holes with cutting guides for cluster perforations of shelf systems must be identical. All punched holes with cutting guides for cluster perforations of shelf systems must be identical. Punched hole quality at the top and below is practically the same. Depending on material thickness, the lower hole can be 0.2 – 0.3mm larger. However, this minimum deviation from the design dimension has no effect on the general function. Another benefit of this punching technology lies in the complete removal of punchings. Instead of being in the tube, the cuttings now drop with every punch stroke through the table into a scrap box. This allows the square or round tube to be automatically turned onto the appropriate side for further processing. Using the control system, the collet chucks in the feed measuring carriage can be turned into any tube position. Depending on size, four tubes can be processed at the same time. Tubes of up to 8m in length are not uncommon. The company states that the best aspect of these machines is the stamping tools themselves. The large tube diameters sometimes handled mean they must be equipped with long tool guides. To rule out any cold welded layers, the dies are coated when punching is done on non-ferrous metals or on stainless steel. As a matter of course all tube-punching machines are fitted out with quick- changing tools.
