I have just returned from the Made in Steel 2019 trade show in Milan, Italy, and as usual it offered a fascinating insight into the latest developments in the steel tube industry. The main theme was sustainability and innovation, and a number of the speakers offered interesting observations. The president and CEO of Made in Steel, Emanuele Morandi, summed up the optimistic mood well: “Steel is the sustainable material par excellence, recyclable and reusable almost indefinitely. It can be further improved and innovated, and it can lead innovation. Steel can be one of the tools to combat ecological damage provided that entrepreneurs work together to develop the steels of the future.” The editorial deadline for the forthcoming September issue is 8 July and we will have two features: tube mills & roll forming lines, and inspection, testing & quality control. It is also an important show issue and is being distributed at FABTECH 2019 in the USA, EMO in Germany, TUBOTECH 2019 in Brazil and Tube Southeast Asia in Thailand. Gantry sawing to complete continuous casting line
steel products in round, square, hexagonal and flat shapes, as well as sections for grading buckets. The client is the largest Turkish company producing quality steel, and accounts for 60 per cent of Turkey’s total quality steel production, while exporting approximately 40 per cent of its products.
METAL cutting bandsaw machine manufacturer Uzay Makina has successfully installed a gantry sawing line for one of Turkey’s leading steel manufacturers. The company has invested in technology from SMS Concast Switzerland to produce blooms at a diameter of 300 to 600mm, with a production capacity of 600,000 tons per year. The product range of the client includes hot-rolled, heat-treated, alloyed, non-alloyed and high-alloyed
The company recently acquired Uzay Makina’s UMSG 800 dual gantry saw machine. The gantry bandsaw is installed after the SMS Concast continuous casting line, for cutting off the head and butt ends and, if necessary, for cutting out defective sections.
This complete sawing system has two sawing heads that move along a 20m table, where the workpieces are fixed. Both saws can move individually on the table. The machine can cut rounds up to 800mm. A programmable automatic feeding system allows the client to reach high levels of productivity. A major advantage of the gantry saw is that it can make a number of cuts with single material positioning; with optional 90° rotating blade guides it is possible to make cuts on different axes (horizontal/vertical).

EWM AG opens new welding centre in France EWM AG, based in Germany, is a manufacturer of arc welding technology. Located just an hour away from Paris, the site is centrally located in the country and enjoys good infrastructure, including excellent road and rail accessibility, making it ideal for managing business relationships throughout France, Belgium and Luxembourg. Kasto Maschinenbau marks 175 th anniversary GERMAN sawing machine and storage system manufacturer Kasto Maschinenbau, which has a UK subsidiary based in Milton Keynes, is this year celebrating its 175 th anniversary. The company has headquarters in Achern, Baden-Württemberg, and the firm has evolved from a one-man business into a globally successful company that remains in the hands of the family that founded it. centres that Kasto started manufacturing in the early 1980s, and the company is still the sole provider of such systems today.

In 1844, carpenter Karl Stolzer, from whom the company name is derived, started a machine shop in Achern to manufacture water wheels, paper and machinery for mills. He later built sawmills. The invention of the Kasto hacksaw in 1947 marked a significant step forward and in the 1960s circular saws were introduced. At the beginning of the 1970s, Kasto launched its first automatic bar storage and retrieval system featuring two integrated circular saws supplied automatically by a gantry crane. It was the precursor of the storage and sawing

Finishing equipment chosen for seamless
pipe production A RUSSIAN tube producer has chosen Fives to supply a range of finishing equipment to process seamless tubes. Fives will design and supply two Bronx six-roll cold pipe straighteners; a Bronx ten-roll hot pipe straightener; Taylor-Wilson end facers; two Taylor- Wilson double head hydrotesters; and two Taylor-Wilson double head drifters. The equipment will be designed to process more than 500,000 tons per year of high-quality seamless tubular products of 73 to 273mm in diameter, mainly designated to oil and gas applications according to international API and Russian GOST standards. The start-up of production is scheduled for 2021.

New head and controls for submerged arc welding
to three wire feeders for single, tandem or triple arc operation. A new integrated control sys- tem allows all parts of the operation to be controlled from a single location. The sys- tem can be used for simultaneous control of ID and OD weld heads for spiral pipe welding from a single operator station. MAC chairman William Gould passes away MAGNETIC Analysis Corporation (MAC) has announced the death of its chairman, William S Gould 3 rd .
In 1992, under Mr Gould’s leadership, the company launched the ERIC V, the first fully computerised eddy current tester. Featuring a real-time, full-colour graphic display and sophisticated software control of test parameters and analysis of test signals, the instrument set a new benchmark for the industry. Mr Gould oversaw the company’s expansion into worldwide markets along with the development of automated test systems for a broad range of products – extending from small diameter tube, bar and wire for critical applications to 500mm diameter oil and gas pipe. “He combined his knowledge of science with a keen understanding of the financial and strategic positioning of the company and a genuine desire to provide an opportunity for each employee to grow to their full potential,” said his son Robert R Gould, MAC’s recently elected chairman. “The result was not only the successful growth of the business, but also the long-term commitment of countless employees all over the world.” Planet, FabbricaFutura and Saldatech), which were added to the traditional innovation areas this year – the Fastener Industry, Ecocoatech and Blech Italy Service. Among these, 78.5 per cent came from the European area, 14 per cent from Asia, 4.5 per cent from the Americas and the remaining 3 per cent from Africa.
Mr Gould succeeded his father, a company founder, as president in 1964, and remained in that role until 2007, when he became chairman – a position he held until his death. During his tenure, he built the company from a small USA-based non-destructive test designer and manufacturer to its current position, providing NDT eddy current, ultrasonic and flux leakage systems and services. In 2016, Mr Gould was honoured by the American Society for Nondestruc- tive Testing for his contributions to the NDT industry through his “knowledge and dedication” for over 50 years. He held a BS degree in mechanical en- gineering from Yale, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, and an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar. Over the course of his years as president of MAC, Mr Gould led the company into many new developments, beginning with the introduction of the

ERIC eddy current tester in 1968, which featured solid-state electronics, phase gating and, later, pulsed eddy current techniques. During the 1970s, he expanded the company’s products to include flux leakage testers and, in 1989, MAC introduced its own line of Echomac ® ultrasonic rotary testers for tube and bar.

Heat exchanger optimising tech receives funding
ACONSORTIUM led by fouling-removal specialist Tube Tech International has received Horizon 2020 SME Instrument funding to develop Flow Optimiser, which will deliver the first optimised flow technology within shell-and-tube heat exchangers (STHEs). STHEs are the most commonly used heat exchangers. Non-uniform flow of product fluid within the heat exchanger causes excessive accumulation of fouling, resulting in lost revenue in refinery operations and a negative, long-term impact on CO 2 emissions due to reduced production and increased energy consumption. The Horizon 2020 SME Instrument is a public programme that funds market-creating innovation in disruptive small businesses that have significant growth potential and global ambitions. The SME Instrument is part of Horizon 2020, the EU’s €80bn funding programme for research and innovation. As part of the programme’s goal to radically reduce carbon emissions and achieve climate resilience by the second half of the century, Tube Tech’s Flow Optimiser solution has been granted funding in recognition of the benefits it can bring to the oil, gas, power and chemical sectors. Flow Optimiser is said to be the world’s first method to combat the global issue of fouling at the source, creating optimal product fluid flow within STHEs to deliver a reduction in accumulation of fouling; reducing blockages disturbing the flow path; increasing production, and decreasing fouling rates and energy consumption; and creating longer asset life on a global scale. During the project, the Flow Optimiser technology will be tested and verified in multiple industrially relevant settings, to create real-world validation of the in-lab physical experiment results, which recorded an approximate average temperature improvement of 7°C and an inflow velocity improvement of approximately ten per cent. Henry Mwai, project manager for Tube Tech International, said, “It is a privilege to be part of the Horizon 2020 project, particularly given the competitiveness of the programme’s funding allocation. Less than five per cent of applications were successful. We are grateful for the opportunity to develop Flow Optimiser and the impact it can make to the critical global challenge of reducing fouling at source.” According to Innovation Kitchen – Horizon 2020 SME Instrument impact report 2018 Edition , companies funded under the SME Instrument grow on average by 118 per cent in terms of turnover, and 158 per cent in terms of employment within 20 months of receiving Horizon 2020 funding. For 30 years, Tube Tech has been providing cleaning and inspection services for static heat transfer plants, providing savings to clients by reducing downtime, cutting CO 2 emissions, increasing throughput and improving safety standards.

Baosteel Zhanjiang chooses Fives furnace for automotive steel production
The Stein Digiflex ® furnace includes a compact and efficient jet preheating furnace; Advantek ® combustion system; FlashCooling ® system for rapid cooling; waste gas system; and Virtuo ® thermal optimisation solution. The Fives offer consists of two metallurgical paths to rapid cooling: dry FlashCooling with high hydrogen content for high cooling rates, and wet FlashCooling for ultra-rapid cooling rates to produce martensitic grades. FlashCooling is a proprietary technol- ogy that gives steelmakers total flexibil- ity to reach the optimum cooling pattern. Given the importance of environmental responsibility among steelmakers in China, the high energy efficiency and low NOx emissions delivered by the AdvanTek combustion system are a benefit to Baosteel Zhanjiang. This is further enhanced by the Virtuo ® , thermal optimisation solution, which optimises strip temperature control stability, helps to reduce gas consumption, eliminates production faults that lead to downgraded coils and improves productivity. The line will be also equipped with CELES induction heaters, serving as in- furnace heating boosters to perform the
BAOSTEEL, the largest automotive steel producer in China, has continued to expand its Zhanjiang integrated steel production complex in southeastern Guangdong province. The expansion project comprises the installation of the cold rolling mill N3, aiming to meet demand for automotive grade steel in the South China and Southeast Asia markets. Fives, a historical and strategical partner of Baosteel, has again been contracted to supply the complete thermal part for the continuous annealing line (CAL) with a production capacity of 630,000 tons per year. The line aims to produce both standard steel grades and advanced high-strength steels. The first coil will be produced by the end of 2021. Fives’ scope of supply will include detailed design, supply and installation supervision of a Stein Digiflex ® furnace and CELES induction heaters.
