Having returned from another successful Tube Düsseldorf trade show at the end of April I notice the dates for the next event have already been confirmed as 30 March to 3 April 2020. Get those dates in your diary. More than 71,500 trade visitors (compared to 69,500 in 2016) from 134 countries visited over the five days and the feedback I received after the show was very positive. This is backed up by the organisers who said a total of 2,683 companies from 67 countries presented their technology in 16 exhibition halls. More than ever before. Next issue we have features on tube mills and rollforming lines, and finishing and end finishing. The magazine will also be distributed at three major shows: FABTECH 2018, Tube China 2018 and EuroBLECH 2018. FORKLIFT manufacturer and material handling solutions provider Combilift has officially opened its new global headquarters and manufacturing facility in Monaghan, Ireland. Celebrating its 20 th anniversary this year, the company also announced that it will be significantly expanding its workforce with the creation of 200 new jobs in the next three years. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Irish Prime Minister, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD, said: “Combilift is an incredible home-grown Monaghan success story. When the company was founded 20 years ago, it had three employees, a brilliant concept, and the ambition to make it a reality. Combilift is playing a significant role in Monaghan’s success, and I would like to congratulate Robert Moffett and Martin McVicar and everyone at Combilift on their achievements to date and wish them every success for the future.” Built at a cost of €50mn, the invest- ment in the new 46,500m 2 facility will allow Combilift to realise its ambitious growth plans. Martin McVicar, managing director, said: “We have employed an additional 230 people since we announced our plans for this factory in 2015 and the combination of this

to enhance its customisation capability and to maximise ROI for its customers. Mr McVicar stated, “The flexibility in our new facility means that we can continue to accommodate any request for a customised material handling solution. We also see ourselves as much more than a forklift manufacturer and are transforming the transport and logistics sector with our innovative, space- spacing products and our services.” Combilift offers a free logistic and warehouse design service, which enables customers to see the benefit that its products will bring to their business. “Our engineers proactively design, plan and produce material flow analysis and 3D animations – 150 to 200 per day for our worldwide customers – which clearly illustrate the capacity potential as well as the optimum flow of materials on their site,” said Mr McVicar. Established in 1998 by Martin McVicar, managing director, and Robert Moffett, technical director, Combilift is a privately held and fully capitalised company. It developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift in 1998. In the first year of operation it produced 18 units,17 of which were exported. The company
state-of-the-art production plant and the growing skilled workforce will allow us to double production within the next five years.” Combilift currently exports 98 per cent of its products to 85 countries through its 250-strong international dealer network. The current workforce stands at 550 people and the new employment opportunities will be for skilled technicians, design engineers, logistics and supply chain specialists and those with mechanical and electrical mechatronics skills. Mr McVicar attributes the com- pany’s impressive growth and its status as an acknowledged world leader in the material handling sector to mass customisation: “Combilift has set the benchmark for the mass production of customised innovative products. Mass customisation is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer as customers are increasingly expecting products to be tailored to their requirements. We listen to and take feedback on board from our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs.” Combilift invests 7per cent of its annual turnover in research and development

now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries. Combilift’s product portfolio has expanded beyond its first multidirectional model, according to Mr McVicar: “Combilift has always focused on a number of niche market segments and has a proven track record of launching one or two new products annually. In the first ten years we focused on the long load material handling sector with the multidirectional range, which revolutionised the handling of long materials, allowing customers to handle long products in less space more safely.” The new 46,500m 2 purpose-built factory is set on a 100-acre site with room for future expansion when required. With 11 acres of roof space it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland. Incorporating the latest manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability, the new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90m moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes. There are 60 welding bays, two plasma cutting machines, three paint lines (which use sustainable water-based paints), and three automatic shot blasters to cater for different sized products. 12,000 pallet locations ensure ample storage space for parts and components. More than 50 truckloads of finished products are dispatched from the factory each week, and spare parts are shipped across the world to the dealer network.

Bystronic acquires tube machining equipment manufacturer
In the months since the partnership agreement was instigated, positive feedback from customers has shown that there is a strong demand in many markets for even closer collaboration between the companies. For the time being, TTM Laser will continue as a brand and will be known as a member of Bystronic. Fiorenzo Castellini, the current CEO of TTM Laser, will retire and hand over responsibility to the remaining management team. Bystronic CEO Alex Waser com- mented, “With the fusion of Bystronic and TTM Laser, our customers are gaining access to a unique range of technologies and innovations for their sheet metal processing requirements from a single source. TTM Laser’s know-how and technology portfolio ideally complement Bystronic’s existing products with world-class systems for tube and profile processing. Finishing mill in aluminium hot rolling line expanded by SMS group

In January, one of the two lines in 1+1+3 configuration (two reversing roughing stands and a three-stand finishing mill), received a further finishing stand. SMS group completed the line expansion to 1+1+4 configuration during a shutdown period of only 23 days. The first coil was successfully rolled on 26 January, one day ahead of schedule. Being in position one of the finishing train, the new high-performance stand accomplishes the major part of the forming work. The stand is of four-

Although no longer the managing director/owner, Mr Lee has remained a key part of the team, visiting Southeast Asia and China four times per year. Successful trade fair for EFD Induction WITH a stand manned by a dozen staff members, EFD Induction was well- prepared for the many visitors at the world’s biggest trade fair for the tube and wire industries. The company returned home with many new customer contacts and business prospects. Dimitar Milenkov, managing director of Bulgarian steel manufacturer HUS Ltd, praised EFD Induction for its after-sales service. Many other existing customers came to share plans for new purchases and there has been a recent surge in sales for EFD Induction tube and pipe welders, with 2018 resulting in multiple sales records being broken.
“I could not have been more pleased with the exhibition,” said global sales director for tube and pipe, Peter Runeborg. “It was particularly nice for us that so many existing customers stopped by to express how pleased they were with the equipment we had delivered, especially in relation to uptime and footprint.”
The increased activity in the tube and wire industries was evident at the 2018 Tube and wire fairs in Düsseldorf: with more than 71,500 trade visitors from 134 countries the fairs have broken all previous records this year. “From the doors opened in themorning
until closing time, the EFD Induction stand was packed with visitors,” said Mr Runeborg. “Some sought us out deliberately, others were drawn to the Weldac 1.1 MW single cabinet tube welder on display, and countless passers-by stopped to watch the live demonstrations of induction heating.” There were visitors from more than thirty different

With a casting radius of 9m, the two- strand continuous casting machine (CCM) is rated for a capacity of 200,000 tons per year. Before the modernisation the CCM had cast section sizes of 125, 160 and 200mm 2 . Together with the revamp of the technological part of the CCM – the
hydraulic oscillation equipment, the secondary cooling system and the withdrawal and straightening unit – the bloom section sizes 240 x 280mm and 250 x 320mm were introduced. “The cooperation with SMS Concast has been very successful and enabled us to restart production with an upgraded continuous casting machine adapted exactly to our high quality standards,” said BL Yadav, general manager, steel melting shop at Aarti Steels. Jobs boost as manufacturing plant opens ENGINEERING firm FES, a supplier of fluid transfer systems to oil and gas clients around the world, has invested in a 25,000ft 2 manufacturing facility in Northumberland, UK, initially creating around 20 new jobs in the process. The plant will enable FES to bring several processes that were previously outsourced, such as fabrication and manufacturing, in-house. be outsourced once the new facility is fully operational. “This investment

Welding consumables selected for Queensferry Crossing
also exhibits a smooth, stable arc with virtually no spatter. Where exposure to the elements meant that it would be difficult at times to apply the GSFCAW (gas-shielded flux-cored arc welding) process, the MMA (manual metal arc) process was selected. However, on a project where productivity is paramount, it was important that the electrode selected maintained this objective. ESAB’s basic- coated, high-recovery, low-hydrogen electrode OK Femax 38.65 (E42 4 B 73 H5) was approved. Used on the S355 grade material, the electrode is said to have produced excellent quality welds while maintaining American Bridge’s requirement for high productivity. To maintain their low hydrogen performance, the electrodes were sup- plied in vacuum packs. For other S355 application areas where the GSFCAW process was difficult to apply and all-positional capability was essential, ESAB Ferex 7016 was approved. Ferex 7016 (E 42 5 B 12 H5) is an all-positional, low- hydrogen, thinly coated, basic electrode that gives Charpy toughness down to -40°C as well as good COD (crack opening displacement) test values. For the S460 grade applications, the basic-coated, low-hydrogen electrode Filarc 88S (E8018-G) was used. Alloyed with 1% Ni and designed to meet the exacting standards demanded by the oil and gas sector, Filarc 88S has good impact toughness down to -60°C coupled with good CTOD performance at -10°C. ESAB was able to ensure the required volumes of welding wire would be available as required by the construction schedule. When FCBC awarded the contract to ESAB, it stipulated that the welding wire must be supplied via a local distributor. ESAB therefore shipped large volumes to its distributor IWS (Industrial Welding Supplies), enabling IWS to deliver the welding wire on an almost daily basis from its base at Dunfermline, just three miles from the construction site.

was to find a combination of welding processes and consumables that would not only meet the mechanical properties of the steel grades selected, but also the suit welding environment, including weather conditions. After welding trials to establish the ‘best fit’ for the project, Mr Ishibashi and FCBC welding engineer Dave Godfrey of Godfrey Welding Engineering settled on four ESAB welding consumables for the task. For most welded joints on the Queensferry Crossing bridge decking, a single flux-cored wire was specified, namely ESAB OK Tubrod 15.14 (T46 2 P C 1 H5). This versatile wire is suitable for all-positional welding on the S355 grade structural steel used in this exposed application. OK Tubrod 15.14 is universally approved to grade 3 by all major authorities. Welding procedures were undertaken in the vertical and horizontal positions. Impact testing at -20°C resulted in values well in excess of those required by the specification. In some areas where high-tensile S460 grade structural steel was employed, ESAB Filarc PZ6138 (T50 6 1Ni P M H5) was used. This wire, which is commonly specified in the offshore sector, contains 0.9 per cent Ni to ensure reliable Charpy impact properties down to -60°C and good CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) performance to -10°C. Filarc PZ6138
ESAB, a specialist in welding and cutting technologies, has supplied flux- cored wires and welding electrodes to the Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors (FCBC) consortium, which designed and built the new Queensferry Crossing road bridge across the Firth of Forth for Transport Scotland. At 1.7 miles long, it is the world’s largest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge. Towering 207m above high tide and requiring 150,000 tonnes of concrete and 35,000 tonnes of steel, the overall scheme has cost approximately £1.35bn and is Scotland’s largest transport infrastructure project in a generation. Built to motorway standards, the bridge has two lanes and a hard shoulder running in each direction, with the roadway supported by three composite steel/concrete towers. To cover all required disciplines for the project, a multinational consortium of four main contractors was required: Hochtief, Germany; Dragados, Spain; Morrison Construction, UK; and American Bridge International, USA. American Bridge was charged with overseeing the production and installation of 121 road sections. This task was coordinated by American Bridge International senior engineer Joshua Ishibashi, who supervised production of the road sections in China, through to final site assembly at Queensferry. Asset helps power potential of biomass plant WITH growing global demand for energy and an increasing acceptance that fossil fuels and nuclear power are not only unsustainable but also damaging to the environment, developing renewable and sustainable energy sources has become a vitally important necessity. BWSC when looking for a manufacturer to lend its expertise inwatermanagement solutions for the project. which enables the pipe to adjust to different loading conditions, vibrations, stress and soil movements, without causing damage to the structure. Asset delivered the project over a two- week scale, saving the client weeks on its initial projections.
Due to the site’s poor ground conditions, BWSC was looking to integrate a surface water attenuation tank to store surface water drainage and avoid ground settlement in the overlying log storage area. To achieve this, Asset provided a comprehensive design service and developed a bespoke solution tailored to the scheme’s requirements. Construction works in connection with the tank were provided by NBC Construction UK installation. The result was a multi-leg attenuation tank: a 940m³ six-leg tank of 2.2m diameter HDPE pipes, with fabricated manifolds at each end and a fully welded system to ensure resistance to impact. Using the Weholite product with welded joints, the HDPE pipe becomes a homogeneous pipe line, capable of withstanding ground settlement without compromising its structural integrity. To further combat the issue of poor soil modulus, a geo-grid was installed to increase ground stabilisation and minimise settlement. With the tank being positioned under a log storage yard, where it would be subjected to heavy loads, it was also important for it to be able to withstand a worst-case load of 420 kN on a single wheel of a Liebherr LH50 log loader. The company provided its expertise to Danish engineering and contracting company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) on a surface water attenuation system for a new biomass power plant being developed by the company in Kent, UK. BWSC undertook a project to reduce the region’s carbon footprint and reliance on imported fossil fuels by providing a secure source of renewable heat and energy through a new combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plant. Powered by locally sourced virgin wood, the plant will generate approximately 27.8 MW of green electricity, capable of supplying up to 50,000 homes. Danieli chosen for new cold mill plant TURKISH manufacturer Tatmetal Çelik has selected Danieli equipment for its new cold mill plant. Featuring six-high technology, the new five-stand cold mill will roll strip ranging from 0.2 to 3mm thickness and up to 1,550mm strip width. The 22,000 kN separating force, together with the installed modern technologies that are standard for Danieli mills, such as roll bending and shifting, ultra-low hysteresis HAGC, lubrication and strip drying systems, and new rolling models, will allow the production of high-strength quality grades with enhanced strip flatness. The new tandem mill be installed in Ereğli in Turkey, linked to an existing continuous pickling line. Danieli will be responsible for the integration of the mill with the pickling line. All of the electrical equipment and control systems, which will provide integrated and optimised system configuration, will be supplied by Danieli Automation. Plant start-up is
forecast for Q4 2019. This is the second tandemmill order for Danieli from Turkey in the last 18 months, with a total of 14 cold mills and processing lines supplied by the company in the same market in the last three years.
