Engineering/AMSAW and the second looks at how ‘ tube mill productivity and line speed are equally important for the market competitiveness of a tube plant ’ by Guowu Gao from FD Machinery. I have just returned from the Lamiera Show in Bologna, Italy. It was my first time at this event and I was really impressed by the quality of the show and its organisation as well as by the charming city itself. Italy’s economy has suffered as much as any of the traditional engineering giants in Europe in recent years. The European tube industry needs a strong Italy. I attended several seminars and spoke to a number of engineering associations who said that this matter was now being treated as a top priority. From what I heard I am optimistic that this is the case. The forthcoming September issue will be distributed at FABTECH, Tube India and EuroBlech. We also have features on bending, end forming & swaging, heat & surface treatments & furnaces, and developments in finishing, end finishing & super finishing. The advertising deadline is 18 July. I hope you enjoy the magazine.

Tube bending specialist sales restructure SCHWARZE-ROBITEC, a manufacturer of tube bending machines, has announced that sales manager Jürgen Korte has retired. Following this, the management structure of the company has been reorganised. The objective of this is to expand the market position of the company and to be the first name that customers think of when it comes to tube bending solutions both in Europe and internationally. Jürgen Korte started as a design manager at Schwarze-Robitec in 1982, and in 1993 assumed the position of sales manager. After 34 years of service with the company, he retired at the end of April 2016. “For decades I have been very passionate about everything I have done at Schwarze-Robitec – always with the knowledge to have a dedicated and dynamic team at my side. I am proud to see so many colleagues who want to celebrate my farewell with me. Needless to say, I shall stay in close contact with the company,” said Mr Korte. With the retirement of Mr Korte, Schwarze-Robitec is taking this opportunity to restructure its sales department. Heike Ahlers is the new sales and marketing manager and functions as the extended arm of the company’s management. Hired in 2013 by Schwarze-Robitec, she was significantly involved in 2015 with the opening of the current subsidiary in the USA. Schwarze-Robitec GmbH – Germany Website: www.schwarze-robitec.com

mills and roll forming machines. In addition, the company has supplied hundreds more mill accessories (weld boxes, turkshead straighteners, etc) as retrofits to existing machines. “I too worked for Yoder for eleven years as a sales engineer,” said Mark Prasek, Rafter VP of sales and marketing. “It was after Walter had already left though. In my time, I essentially was competing with him. In all those years I was only able to beat him once or maybe twice. In those cases, however, I recall there were ‘extenuating circumstances’ that played a part in my minor success. Now at Rafter I can see why he always seemed to run circles around me. He knows the equipment inside and out and he knows what the customer needs.” “Walter always pushed us to maintain a strong, conservative financial position,” said John Hostetler, Rafter CFO. “He always worked to retain quality employees to make it through the ups and downs associated with the manufacturing industry. It was this type of leadership that permitted a company like Rafter to survive years like 2009. As a result Rafter learned how to become more efficient, not only in manufacturing but also in administrative functions. We are a better company now.” “Walter has been an influential and important part of the tube and pipe mill industry for 60 years, and his depth of experience from apprenticeship to ownership is truly an example of the American dream,” said Daniel Whitehill, Rafter president. “I would like to personally thank Walter, Paul Rhode and Jack Brandli for their years of experience and the amount of knowledge they have passed on to me and the rest of the Rafter employees over the years. We will continue the Rafter name under the same principles these men set forth – rugged, dependable equipment and dealing quickly and fairly with our customers’ needs. In addition, Walter will remain on the company board of directors and will still be available for consultation. His company email address will remain active.” Mr Krenz’s influence and contributions to the tube and pipe industry are significant. Although his talents and skills will surely be missed he has paid his dues and has earned the right

has announced the retirement of company founder and former president Walter Krenz. In 1988 Mr Krenz and his two partners (Paul Rohde and Jack Brandli) purchased the Rafter Machine Company and relocated it to the Cleveland, Ohio, USA, area. The company was subsequently renamed Rafter Equipment Corporation. However, Mr Krenz’s story begins well before Rafter Equipment. In 1952, Mr Krenz immigrated to the USA from Germany where he gained both his US citizenship and high- school diploma in 1956. In June of that same year, Mr Krenz was hired by The Yoder Company where he started as a machine apprentice and, thus, began his career in the tube and pipe industry. Over the next four years Mr Krenz obtained his Journeyman Certificate, and by 1961 he was assembling tube and pipe mills. Soon after, Mr Krenz was transferred to Yoder’s engineering department where he designed mill equipment until 1964. Moving to the sales department as a sales engineer, Mr Krenz spent the next six years preparing equipment prices, writing equipment specifications and meeting with tube mill customers. He was then promoted to tube mill sales product manager in 1970. The following year, he was promoted again to assistant plant manager and then plant manager. By 1973, Mr Krenz advanced to vice- president of manufacturing where he served for the next three years. In 1977 he became Yoder’s vice-president of sales and marketing. It is safe to say that Mr Krenz knew tube and pipe mill equipment as well as anybody in the tubing world by this point. In 1986, Mr Krenz and his partners first tried to buy Yoder from then owner The Northern Group, a Seattle investment company, when it was put up for sale. Although unsuccessful, the desire to be his own boss never faded and Rafter Equipment became a reality just two years later, in 1988. With Rafter Mr Krenz and his partners were determined to design new tube and pipe mills that were more robust and operator friendly. They brought a new level of customisation to the industry. Over the past 28 years the company has built well over 100 tube and pipe

to now enjoy himself away from the industry. Well-wishers are encouraged to leave comments for Mr Krenz on the company’s website blog. Rafter Equipment Corporation manufactures tube mills, pipe mills, roll forming machines, cut-off machines, and auxiliary and other related mill machinery. Additional services include rebuilding and upgrading mill equipment. Originally started in 1917, the Rafter name is known for reliable, high-quality tube mill and roll forming equipment. Rattunde opens new facility in Mexico RATTUNDE Corporation, the North American arm of a Germany-based manufacturer of finished length tube and solid bar production systems, has been operating from a single location in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area for over nine years. The company’s success in the market resulted in the recent grand opening of a new facility in the Monterrey, Mexico, area to serve its growing customer base in the country. Rattunde Corporation president Richard Stadler and VP Alec Banish, joined by Rattunde Mexico director Javier Lopez and his team, opened the doors to the new facility in Apodaca earlier this year. This new 8,073ft 2 (750m 2 ) tech centre houses the Mexican sales and service operations, application engineering, and spare parts inventory. Future plans include a machine on-site in 2017 for demonstration and training. This decision to open a tech centre in

from Mexico-based management and procurement personnel also contributed to the decision. Rattunde has also expanded its workforce in Mexico with technical service, sales and administrative personnel. As Mr Stadler explained: “Whenever a machinery company grows quickly there’s an ever-present need for more customer service and technical assistance personnel. Of course, new people must be found and trained.” He also explained that, rather than waiting for a customer to reach out to Rattunde in a time of need, the company is proactively sending technicians to its customers and performing comprehensive machine inspections, identifying and correcting small issues before they become large ones. For Mexico, two Rattunde service technicians are now in-country, one operating from the new tech centre in Apodaca and another based in Guadalajara. Mr Stadler added: “This new facility solidifies our Mexican presence in the high-volume tube and solid bar production markets such as auto, appliance and aero, thus benefiting our current and future customers in many ways. We’re selling to a large number of companies in various markets, in- country, so it was a logical move for us to be here.” Other attendees at this grand opening included Rattunde personnel, sales representatives from the North American network, honoured guests from the parent company in Germany, plus customers, prospective business partners and suppliers to the company. Mexico was reached after an analysis of the current and anticipated business needs of the company in- country, according to Mr Stadler. “Our growth in America and in Mexico has been rapid, though not unexpected, due to the unique nature of our equipment and the reliability and performance characteristics of our machines. With a solid install base and growing demand for local service in Mexico, this move simply made a lot of sense to us.” Mr Stadler fur- ther noted that solid growth of the company into diverse markets throughout North America made the new facility a logical choice. In addition, he said the new machine sales generated directly

Denys and Selmers win technology award SELMERS has announced that the company, together with Denys, has won the 2015 IPLOCA New Technologies Award sponsored by BP. The award was presented during the IPLOCA annual convention held in Singapore, by Michael Hiam, engineering manager, BP Integrated Supply and Trading. Jean Claude Van de Wiele, Johan Van Wassenhove, Bart Appelman, Luc Hoppenbrouwers and Michael Hiam

The award is given in recognition of a significant achievement in the development of new pipeline technologies. The IPLOCA New Technologies committee, with Jean Claude Van de Wiele as the chairman, decided to present the award to Denys and Selmers, represented Johan van Wassenhove (Denys), Bart Appelman (Selmers) and Luc Hoppenbrouwers (Denys), in recognition of their work on their onshore automatic vacuum field joint blasting. The adjudication committee selected this entry because the new tool improves HSE conditions for workers in the field; it is a development coming from a contractor and a manufacturer

Polysoude, invited by KCI, not only took part in the event as an exhibitor, but was also able to provide a technical presentation, given by Kees Meurs, sales manager for The Netherlands. This tenth staging of the conference was an ideal opportunity to show the audience one of the major breakthroughs in the cladding field: a process designed for tubing with corrosion-resistant alloys – the TIGer technology.

Open days have been organised in Germany, France, Italy and India, welcoming industrial and business people wishing to find the best technical and economical welding and cladding solution. Welding technicians, decision makers and project managers from all over the world attended presentations and live demonstrations, at which open discussion took place in a convivial atmosphere. Another key event, in November, 2015, was Polysoude’s participation at the Stainless Steel World Conference & Exhibition, in Maastricht in the Netherlands. This event aims particularly at presenting the newest and most

The principles and numerous technical and economic advantages of the TIGer welding solution were emphasised during the conference. From a technical point of view the quality of the deposit, the low dilution rate and the flawless control of the cladding thickness are all crucial points for any companies aiming for zero-defect welds. When calculating the profitability

of a project, productivity gains are achieved due to the high deposit rate, absence of the need for post cladding machining and an infinite repeatability of operations as a result of automation. The TIGer equipment exhibited on the stand enabled the experts to perform live demonstrations on samples typically used in the oil and gas field, in construction or in power plant maintenance. Many visitors to the stand were able to discuss their specific production problems. They were eager to discover the key characteristics of the Polysoude equipment in terms of productivity, capacity and output. In 2015, Polysoude also witnessed a soaring demand for full scale tests directly on site. With the development of its services department Polysoude aims to provide support to its clients, from the first steps of machine installation by offering training for equipment use and maintenance to equipment rental either for a trial before a purchase decision or during a production peak.

Primetals modernises twin electric arc furnace PRIMETALS Technologies has won an order from China’s Baoshan Iron & Steel Co Ltd (Baosteel) to modernise a more than 20-year-old DC twin electric arc furnace at its Shanghai plant. The project involves redesigning both the upper and lower vessels and installing new anodes in each case. Improved power efficiency reduces production costs, and raw materials can be used more flexibly. It will therefore be possible in future to operate the electric arc furnace with a hot metal content of up to 90 per cent. Modernisation work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016. In 2014, the Baosteel Group’s annual steel production was more than 43 million metric tons. The company manufactures products for the domestic and international markets.

The twin electric arc furnace has a tapping weight of 150 metric tons and is part of a production line on which billets and long products are manufactured for use as structural steels. Under the modernisation project, Primetals Technologies will be engineering, manufacturing and supplying essential components. The upper vessels with their water- cooled wall panels will be completely redesigned, and the lower sections will each be equipped with a new, air- cooled FIN anode. The guaranteed anode durability is more than 1,500 melts. Primetals is also responsible for monitoring the installation and commissioning work. Emmedi presents new compact design AFTER a four-year absence Emmedi again joined the Tube exhibition in Germany this year. It was an opportunity for the group to present a number of companies and products that reach beyond the world of induction equipment: heat treatment applications, end-finishing and threading equipment, and customised units for tube and pipe bending and processing. rounded and aerodynamic profiles, has been designed to allow electrical and hydraulic inlet and outlet in different positions (as standard), thus easily adapting to different workshop layouts and obtaining the maximum flexibility in the installation. Along with providing continuous design improvement and innovation Emmedi customers benefit from the

resources of a global corporation, granting worldwide assistance through its network of experienced service teams. The launch coincides with the celebrations for SAET of 50 years and Ajax Tocco of 100 years of excellence in the industry.

SAET SpA – Italy Website: www.saetemmedi.com

Thanks to support from the corporate Park Ohio Holdings the group’s aim is to become a universal resource to the tube and pipe industry. The stand at the Tube show gathered a combination of brands and products on a single showcase: AjaxTocco Magnethermic, Ajax Ceco, Pillar, PMC-Colinet, Pines, SAET and Emmedi. For the first time after the acquisition in late 2014, the Emmedi presence at the Tube show in Düsseldorf was a crucial stage to testify the group commitment in supporting the brand to regain trust and market share. Emmedi representatives had the opportunity to meet business partners and customers, current and prospective, and to consolidate its reputation as a high quality player in the manufacturing of induction systems. Throughout the years Emmedi has always cared about customers’ production needs and suggestions, thus designing tailor-made solutions and products. The main innovation presented at the Tube show was a renewed design of the solid state welding cabinet, which has been conceived to meet market requirements in terms of flexibility, reduced floor space and easy maintenance. Keeping the state-of-the-art MOSFET- based solution to allow for efficient frequency increasing up to 450kHz, development has been performed to increase the power delivered by each basic module. In this way, a welding head downsize has been made possible, achieving an overall volume reduction of around 40 per cent compared to the previous generation. To better cover market requirements, a power range extension up to 1MW is also possible. Maintenance has also been improved, becoming even easier than before. The replacement of doors with fast-removing panels allows quick dismounting and easy accessibility, and helps reduce space during maintenance operations. In addition, the cabinet, distinguished by a metallic frame with
