ERW steel tube inspection using integrated sectorial magnetising unit from CMS

to enhance the accuracy of inspections. As welded tubes are produced, they pass beneath the eddy current sectorial probe covering the weld area. When a flaw is detected, a change in the coil’s impedance triggers an alarm displayed on the control screen. All the inspection results are displayed and processed in real time by the supervision software, Probus on a Zet@ Premium generator. They are analysed and collected to automatically create a complete inspection report for traceability. All inspection systems are tailor-made in the workshop in France, allowing CMS to provide turnkey solutions fully adapted to the customer’s needs. CMS will at the tube exhibition in Dusseldorf, Germany, which takes place from 15-19 April 2024. CMS is based at booth 6B23 in the tube pavilion and booth 11C01 in the wire pavilion. Visitors will be able to see the newest turnkey solutions, featuring an automated bench that integrates eddy current and ultrasonic inspection systems.

CONTROLE Mesure Systemes (CMS) is a French company known for its eddy current and ultrasonic non-destructive testing solutions, which are distributed worldwide. CMS has developed two complete current systems dedicated to the inspection of welded steel tubes, using a sectorial magnetising unit. These turnkey systems have been integrated into the customer’s existing production lines. The systems are positioned after the tube welding station. This system accommodates a range of tube diameters from 10 to 57.9mm with a line speed that can reach up to 1.5m/s (300ft/min). The sectorial magnetising unit is dedicated to the detection of short and transverse defects, as well as open welds. The customer is enhancing its internal quality controls as part of an effort to expand its client portfolio. These controls ensure full compliance with the primary international standards. The customer turned to CMS to develop a customised solution that accommodates its production constraints. These turnkey systems are composed of one sectorial magnetising unit,

which produces magnetic saturation concentrated in the weld area of the tube allowing an inspection by an eddy current sectorial probe. Connected to the unit, the encoder measures the tube’s speed and gives the position of the defect. This information is then sent to the marking and sawing systems of the mill. Rollers are positioned on either side of the probe to convey and guide the tube precisely during the inspection. To best meet the customer’s needs and production processes, these systems have been meticulously customised. They include features such as a vertical pneumatic cylinder to facilitate off-line calibration. Several additional settings have been integrated

ergonomically and efficiently. This saves further processing steps, like welding, screwing or swaging the hoses as crimping is a simple process. The repeatability is also guaranteed. Thanks to the 126mm wide base dies, a large number of cross sections and workpiece lengths can be machined. With this C-crimper (opened at the front), the workpiece can be inserted at any point and immediately removed from the side after the process. For example a 16mm steel cable with aluminium sleeve or the 4" industrial hose with ANSI flange or 5" layflat hoses. The long opening allows full use of the 155mm side opening. The machine is available with a modern 12" touch screen IPC control from Siemens as standard. This allows the process to be monitored and an IT connection enables the further use of the data in the course of production. Uniflex Hydraulik, based near Frankfurt, Germany, has been developing and producing systems for the manufacture and processing of hose assemblies for more than 50 years. The company also has subsidiaries in the US and Asia.

IF a customer wishes to process complicated components, such as an industrial hose with a large flange, rope rings, rope loops, or assemble long ropes with centre machining, then the new C-crimper could be the solution. With the Uniflex crimper HMC 5-200 everything up to 200t/2000kN radial crimp force can be processed
