Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. In this issue we have a feature on fittings, valves, flanges and connectors, and take a look at Stainless Steel World 2017, which is taking place in Maastricht in The Netherlands at the end of November. We also have extended articles from DP Technology and GE Oil & Gas that discuss improving the wheel machining process and recent advances in ultrasonic inspection of seamless tube and pipe. I will be attending the Stainless Steel World 2017 trade show and look forward to visiting this historic city again and speaking to members of the steel industry gathered at this excellent event. Hopefully the mood will be more optimistic than two years ago when a lot of companies reported that business was difficult due to the ongoing global recession and low oil prices. Do come and say hello if you are there. It is not long now until Tube Düsseldorf 2018 and we will be starting to plan this major issue of the magazine soon so please do start thinking about your editorial submissions. I would also advise anyone interested in supporting their editorial with an advertisement to confirm their position in the magazine as soon as possible – early positions in the magazine will soon be filled up. Next issue we have features on valves, fittings, flanges and connectors; mechanical tubing (automotive, aerospace, etc); and tube handling and logistics. The January issue will also have a Tube Düsseldorf Preview so if you would like to give readers and those attending Tube Düsseldorf 2018 an advance look at what you will be exhibiting at the show – and the location of your stand – then please submit your editorial as soon as possible.

Simplifying compliance: a guide to using HDPE conduit A comprehensive new reference guide to the many existing industry high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conduit standards has been published by the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI), a non-profit trade association representing the plastic pipe industry. Technical Note 50 (TN-50) – ‘Guide To Specifying HDPE Conduit’ is available free of charge from the PPI’s website, via the ‘Publications & Resources’ menu option, where a technical documents index is supplied. Intended as a reference for specifying agencies, utility design engineers and contractors, TN-50 includes details on ASTM, NEMA and UL standards for HDPE conduit, and clarifies differences between HDPE water pipe and conduit standards. It provides a table for proper selection of standards based on conduit diameter and wall-type, and contains a flow chart that visually illustrates ways to quickly find relevant standards for a specific application. Multiple sources are noted for availability of further assistance. “Although product standards for HDPE water pipe and conduit may appear similar, conduit specifications have been specifically developed for the demands of telecom, power, utility, aerial or underground applications,” explained Lance MacNevin, P.Eng, director of engineering for PPI’s Power & Communications Division (PCD). “Specifying an incorrect standard for HDPE conduit can delay projects, increase costs or result in an inappropriate material selection. This new guide is designed to help users avoid those problems.” TN-50 will be reviewed by PPI members annually, and updated as required. Five-year programme to continue natural gas infrastructure upgrades

PSE&G (Public Service Electric and Gas Company), the largest utility in New Jersey, USA, has unveiled a proposal for the second phase of its natural gas infrastructure modernisation pro- gramme. If approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), the programme will enable PSE&G to continue to accelerate the replacement of its ageing cast-iron and unprotected steel gas pipes, installing 1,250 miles of new gas mains over a five-year period. The proposed cost is approximately $540mn per year, or $2.7bn in total. “Through the success of our current modernisation programme, we’ve demonstrated we can manage a larger- scale, longer-duration programme safely and cost-effectively,” said Ralph LaRossa, PSE&G president and COO. “Today’s proposal would give us the ability to replace more ageing gas pipes at an accelerated pace, ensuring we can continue to provide customers with safe, reliable natural gas service now, and for many years to come. The filing is also in line with the BPU’s proposed rules on supporting longer- term infrastructure programmes.” PSE&G has almost 4,000 miles of cast- iron gas pipes – more than any other utility in the USA. At the pace proposed, the utility can replace in 20 years its cast-iron and unprotected steel pipes with modern plastic pipes. Pipes installed before 1960 are the most leak-prone. When lines are replaced, gas meters located inside the home or business are moved outside. This allows PSE&G and other first-responders to shut off gas more quickly in the event of an emergency. It also facilitates routine safety inspections and provides easier access for meter readings. The new proposal is a continuation of work the utility is performing under its Gas System Modernization Program, which is replacing 510 miles of gas mains over three years. Since January 2016, PSE&G has replaced 286 miles of pipes. The upgrades will take place across PSE&G’s service territory in 11 counties, concentrating on urban areas established in the early 1900s, where

Fine Tubes secures fourth Nadcap accreditation Fine Tubes, a UK-based manufacturer of precision tubing for critical appli- cations, has been awarded Nadcap accreditation for Chemical Processing. Nadcap is an internationally recognised accreditation system that covers the key manufacturing and production processes used within the aerospace industry. (Ultrasonic Testing) in 2005, and Fusion Welding in 2013. Chemical processing is a critical part of the Fine Tubes production process. Tubes must be chemically milled after the cold working and heat treating manufacturing processes, by being etched to ensure they meet the customer specification requirements.

To achieve its latest accreditation Fine Tubes undertook an intensive on-site inspection and investigation by a Nadcap auditor. This audit covered all aspects of the process: the machinery, consumables and methods employed, as well as the qualifications and experience of the staff involved. Dr Abdul Saeid, process engineer at Fine Tubes, commented, “The auditor found no failures to comply with the Nadcap criteria, and that is a major credit to the Fine Tubes production team involved in the audit.” Fine Tubes and its USA-based sister company, Superior Tube, are units of Ametek Specialty Metal Products. Both companies have supplied the aerospace industry with tubes for more than 50 years. Their precision tubes are used in airframes, aircraft engines and aerospace instrumentation, where they are relied upon to withstand the critical operating conditions. “This latest Nadcap accreditation gives our customers further confidence that all the stringent requirements of Nadcap have been met and they are dealing with a qualified manufacturer,” stated Valerie Hart, technical manager at Fine Tubes. Fine Tubes – UK sales.finetubes@ametek.com www.finetubes.com

“The tubing we manufacture is designed to withstand in-process fatigue loading, and failure is not an option,” said David Killoran from the Fine Tubes technical team. “When aircraft manufacturers need tubing, they inevitably look for suppliers who can demonstrate the most stringent quality standards. Nadcap accreditation is widely viewed as confirmation of that, and so with every Nadcap accreditation

The latest certification places Fine Tubes among a very small group of companies to have held four Nadcap accreditations simultaneously. Moreover, the company anticipates receiving another accreditation, for Fluid Distribution Systems, shortly. The company’s first accreditation was awarded for Heat Treating in 2004, followed by Non-Destructive Testing

Best practice approach to water industry PE pipe jointing

Pipes Group. She commented, “These manuals are over 20 years old and we are pleased to be able to provide modern, practical advice to a new generation of engineers and designers. Whilst financial pressures on water companies and their partners have increased over the years, the fundamental need to provide a reliable, durable and economic underground pipeline system remains the prime goal.” The BPF Pipes Group has made the new guidance available on its website (in the Support & Downloads – Guidance Notes section), adding to a growing bank of short, easy-to-read and free-to- download technical references. Craig Smith, utilities sales manager at Georg Fischer, a BPF Pipes Group member company, commented, “Each of the three jointing methods available for PE pipe – electrofusion, butt fusion and mechanical fittings – can provide long-term, leak tight solutions. Working together as members of the BPF Pipes Group means we have been able to offer consistent and sound technical advice on the best choices for different pipe sizes and situations. We are pleased to be able to support our customers through the sharing of knowledge.”

With the focus for AMP6 on long-term resilience of the UK’s water supply combined with pressure on construction and operating costs, it is important that decision processes can be supported by sound reasoning and practical knowledge. The newguidancedocument identifies the preferred method of joining for a range of applications, together with the basis for that recommendation and any suitable alternatives. Julia Trew, who led the revision of the Pipe Materials Selection and the Polyethylene Pipe Systems manuals, is now standards manager at the BPF

The BPF Pipes Group is creating a key resource for a new generation of engineers and designers. The latest in its series of ‘best practice’ guides covers the joining of polyethylene pipes for below-ground water and wastewater applications. Since the 1980s, the UK water industry has prided itself on high quality technical guidance for pipeline designers on the choice of materials, installation techniques and jointing solutions to ensure the best engineering and economic solutions can be chosen for any given application.

infrastructure. The systems are basically micro turbines that are designed to be installed in pipeline networks having natural gravity flow of water with high- pressure heads. In-pipe hydro systems are segmented into internal systems and external systems. A market share of more than 80 per cent is contributed by internal systems (in 2016), and this seems to remain high for the forecast period. These internal systems are installed inside the pipe, and their specification therefore depends on the diameter of the pipe. External systems are installed onto the pipe, but they require enclosure vaults. In-pipe hydro systems are further segmented based on power generation capacity, as micro turbines (5 to 100 kW) and pico turbines (less than 5 kW). For the forecast period, growth in terms of CAGR is more for the pico turbines. By application, the market is segmented

Transparency Market Research (TMR) has released a report titled ‘In-Pipe Hydro Systems Market: Global Industry, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast, 2017-2025.’ According to the report, the global in-pipe hydro systems market was valued at US$8.83mn in 2016 and is projected to reach $16.13mn by 2025 at a CAGR of 7.2 per cent from 2017 to 2025. The renewable energy generation industry in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America has been expanding significantly over the last few years. This has fuelled demand for innovative, cost- effective and hassle-free technologies that can generate significant amounts of energy to be utilised on a larger scale. Though renewable energy generation with wind turbines and solar panels is common, these techniques require large amount of infrastructure. In-pipe hydro technology requires no additional

Bespoke sealing solution for seaport Trelleborg’s pipe seals operation has supplied the largest single order of its flexible Pipe-to-Manhole Connectors for the new $2bn International Türkmenbaşı Seaport in Turkmenistan. clamp on the connector directly against the inside walls of the pipe corrugations, creating a watertight seal up to 24".

Sanharib Mirza, Trelleborg business development manager for the Middle East and Africa, added, “With its unique design, Trelleborg’s pipe adaptor provides an excellent sealing surface on corrugated HDPE pipes. The Kor-N-Seal I 106/406 series comes with a patented Waveband technology which creates a more effective seal by concentrating the compressive force of the expansion band and capturing the rubber between the band and the concrete, making it 100 per cent leak-free and the perfect solution to meet the needs of the Türkmenbaşı Seaport project and ensure long-term performance.” Due for completion in December 2017, the new seaport will be used to export oil products, liquefied gas and textiles, and will boost import and export cargo transport as well as traffic capacity across the region.

Ahmet Gökdemir, procurement chief at GAP Insaat, said, “Launched in 2014, the new Türkmenbaşı Seaport consists of a ferry, passenger and cargo terminal including a state-of-the-art shipyard. To deliver the best services possible within the port, we needed a reliable supplier that could deliver thousands of connector seals for the water and wastewater management operations across the entirety of the project that would remain watertight for 25 years. “The main challenge for the supplier was to be able to provide a product capable of fitting three different types of corrugated pipes and therefore three different sizes of ribs. Trelleborg was chosen for this project as the only supplier capable of bridging all types of corrugated pipes as they manufacture their own bespoke corrugated pipe adaptors.”

With adaptable solutions and a long- term 25-year+ watertight seal warranty, Trelleborg was able to provide bespoke seal connectors in the required volume for the three different types of corrugated pipes used across the 1.2mn-square- metre port. Turkish construction firm GAP Insaat specifically chose the Kor-N-Seal ® for the 8.8kmof wastewater plastic pipelines and 48.4km of storm water pipeline across the four terminals because of the long-term sealing performance provided by its patented Waveband technology. Easy to install, and in line with specification for connectors between reinforced concrete manhole structures (ASTM C923), the Pipe-to- Manhole Connector uses an adapter that distributes the force from the pipe
