Welcome to the latest Tube Products INTERNATIONAL magazine. In this issue you will find features on plastic & composite tubes & pipes as well as OCTG, gas & pipeline products. The technical article this issue is from the experts at Valve World and looks at recent advances in the design of valves (page 56). Much of what is predicted in the article will be relevant to other areas of the industry and it offers an interesting insight into the future of design. As also mentioned in the article it will not be long before valve and tube samples are able to be 3D printed in factories and offices anywhere around the world or even while out in the field – for example on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean. The more remote the destination, the more this process makes sense. How long will it be before robots are printing spare tube parts on a space station, rather than sending up supply rockets to perform more simple tasks? The magazine team will be at both FABTECH Canada and Guangzhou trade shows in June so please do come and say hello if you are visiting the shows. Canada is a relatively new area for us so it is good to meet those involved in the industry from a country with so many natural resources that require tubes, valves and associated products to transport oil, gas and water across the vast country – and of course also to the US. Next up we have the July issue of the magazine and it will have features on valves, fittings, flanges & connectors as well as steel & stainless steel tubes, copper & aluminium tubes, and corrosion repair & replacement.

Conex Bänninger grows turnover from OEM solutions

of our processes and systems, alongside product tests and measurements. Both aspects are essential to us delivering the best possible products and services to our customers, ensuring our high standards are always met. “Our test procedures are thorough, with pressure, thermal, tensile, resistance and pneumatic tests all carried out, alongside other more specialist tests depending on the product in question. We have nine dedicated members of staff in the quality control team, with the machinery operators on the factory floor also playing an important role, as they constantly carry out quality tests as part of their daily remit. “Looking at our OEM service specifical- ly, having an in-house team enables us to eliminate problems before they reach the customer. We can identify potential issues and propose solutions to rectify them very quickly. This includes production process improvements, staff training and tooling performance monitoring.” Conex Bänninger – UK www.conexbanninger.com In addition to the local impact, other businesses will see benefits, including Italian company Marcegaglia, which supplies the unbent tubing material. UKF/JPC managing director Simon Greenhill commented, “This is a very exciting time for the company and local businesses. Being able to keep skilled manufacturing in the area was a real bonus for us when we agreed the takeover.” The Joint Perforating Company – UK

Conex Bänninger, a manu- facturer of pipe fittings and valves, has grown its OEM tube solutions revenue within the last five years, highlighting the company’s expertise and manufacturing skill within this discipline. The business supplies bespoke tube components and pipe fittings, with OEM customer end products ranging from boilers to industrial heat pumps, and the company servicing sectors such as ACR, domestic and industrial heating, medical and industrial gases. The company has the ability to under- take processes of tube manipulation as well as tube fabrication on tube diameters ranging from 54 to 219mm. Piotr Matykiewicz, OEM cell manager at Conex Bänninger, said, “Thanks to recent investments in our world class machinery, we are able to produce complex products to high quality standards for our customers. The modern technologies at our disposal also mean that we can offer our industry-leading functions such as tube manipulation at a competitive premium, with high reliability.

“The machinery performance is matched by our in-house engineers’ technical expertise, who work with the customer to provide the product design, bespoke tooling designs and technical support to achieve the required solution. This includes constantly refining the designs, with any modifications to existing products made to minimise cost for our clients.” Conex Bänninger’s quality control function ensures that the solutions provided are of a high standard – an increasingly important function with the complex nature of the work and the rise in volume of OEM orders. Ewa Szymańska, quality manager at Conex Bänninger, explained, “The key to our quality control is the repeated review operation to outside the UK. JPC was able to step in, already being a supplier of tubular components to EET. Rather than seeing the loss of the manufacturing site, JPC agreed that it would take over the EET bending cells and keep the jobs in Coventry. With six sophisticated bending machines that it says rival any other firm in the country, JPC offers job security for at least the next five years, producing and supplying a complete range of original equipment bend and manipulated exhaust pipes direct to EET’s remaining facility in Cowley.

Boost to local economy The Joint Perforating Company (JPC), based in Bromsgrove, UK, plans to save local jobs by taking over a pipe bending business and preventing the loss of employment.

JPC, part of the UKF Stainless Holdings Group, said it expects to save at least 12 of the existing workforce and has plans for further expansion. Previous owner Eberspaecher (EET) had planned to move its automatic welding cells from Coventry to Cowley, where it has warehouse facilities next door to its customer, but was considering moving the tube bending

indometal 2018 indometal – the international metal and steel trade fair for Southeast Asia – is scheduled to take place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 17 to 19 October 2018 at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran. More than 75 per cent of exhibitors are expected to come from outside Indonesia, together with international representation from national pavilions and country groups such as China, Germany, Italy and Taiwan.

demand is driving efforts in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam to build more modern plants to better compete with China’s enormous mills.” Efforts are already underway to improve local processing and smelting industries to reduce the nation’s dependence on imports. With domestic manufacturers only able to produce a fraction of Indonesia’s steel needs, the country imports nearly half of its steel demands. The Indonesian government aims to see domestic steel production capacity rise to 12 million tons by 2019, followed by 17 million tons by 2024, and to 25 million tons by 2035. However, this target, set in the National Industry Development Masterplan by Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry, will require private investor involvement. “Against this backdrop, Indonesia is a model location for a specialised trade fair such as indometal which presents a comprehensive spectrum of products and solutions in the metal and steel value chain which will be critical for domestic producers looking to upgrade their technology and to remain competitive in the industry, as well as provide a one-stop platform for international companies looking to invest and enlarge their footprint in Indonesia and the region,” added Ms Ho. Jointly organised by Messe Düsseldorf Asia and PT Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur (WAKENI), indometal has gained recognition as an exhibition focused on the synergistic interrelations of foundry technology, castingproducts, metallurgy and thermoprocess technology. indometal showcases new solutions for better production and processing efficiency and new market innovations reflecting market trends, and changes and demands of the metal and steels industries. In 2018, the exhibition will focus on machinery and equipment optimisation, retooling and steelmaking technology, and resource- and cost-efficient solutions and applications. Messe Düsseldorf Asia Pte Ltd – Singapore indometal@mda.com.sg www.indometal.net

According to Beattrice J Ho, project director of indometal, co-organised by Messe Düsseldorf Asia, Indonesia is a growing hotspot for the export market as steel production is shifting from mature to emerging economies: “This bodes well for Indonesia and the region as the industry prepares for growth and development. Although steel from China is still expected to dominate for many years, strong global

Many towns and cities across the UK have experienced flooding, sometimes with devastating consequences. While we cannot control the weather, flooding is a problem that can be prevented with an effective modern drainage system. Water management specialist Asset International delivers flood alleviation schemes using Weholite HDPE pipes including, most recently, a waste water storage upgrade in Rutherglen, just outside Glasgow, UK. In recent years, areas of Rutherglen, including six properties in the Viewpark Drive residential development, have been affected by issues with recurrent flooding. To tackle this problem, as part of a wider £250mn five-year programme of work, Scottish Water undertook a £3.2mn project to reduce the risk of flooding by improving its waste water infrastructure, increasing the capacity of the sewer network responsible for the Viewpark area. Having previously worked on attenuation systems with Asset International, including projects in Meadowhead, Lossiemouth, the Ness-Dollar and most recently Mingulay Crescent, Scottish Water opted to again utilise Asset’s expertise in flood alleviation systems for this project.

The tank includes seven 1,500mm internal diameter Weholite pipes

To help achieve this, Asset supplied a new 260m 3 attenuation tank to provide additional capacity for the area’s waste water. After completing the initial design, Asset manufactured and supplied a double manifold pipe tank consisting of seven 33.5m-long, 1,500mm internal diameter Weholite pipes and integral 1,200mm internal diameter access shafts. Due to the site’s location within a built- up residential area, the project was subject to a number of environmental constraints that required the tank’s components to be delivered in lengths no longer than 8.8m. The versatile nature of Weholite allowed these limitations to be easily accommodated, enabling Asset and FPP to deliver bespoke short sections of pipework that were welded internally on-site following their placement and installation. The product’s light weight combined with the shorter length of the pipes selected for the project meant that less plant and equipment was required, minimising disruption and inconvenience for both residents and road users, while enabling the pipes to be laid and installed quicker than would have otherwise been possible.

Delivered in collaboration with FPP Scotland, the Scottish Water framework supplier based in Hillington, Glasgow, the project at Viewpark Drive is set to bring environmental improvements to the local area by ensuring the sewer network is capable of storing more water during periods of heavy rainfall, when the system becomes overburdened.

IOS secures two new contracts valued at £12.5mn Storage and inspection firm

IOS’s new inspection facility will give it additional capacity to handle the requirements of the Sumitomo contract. The OCTG inspection and preparation resource will prepare and inspect up to 300 joints per day – triple the current capacity. The key factors in Sumitomo’s selection of the facility were the close proximity to the Peterhead port, the range of services provided and the potential for future expansion. Donald MacKay, VP for European business

Independent Oilfield Services (IOS) has secured two major new contracts, worth more than £12.5mn. The Sumitomo Corporation Europe has awarded IOS an eight-year, £10mn contract to carry out OCTG management and inspection services, while Odfjell Drilling has agreed a £2.5mn contract for the management and inspection of drill pipe. IOS is now proceeding with a £3mn expansion to its Longside Supply Base near Peterhead, UK, in order to significantly expand its capacity to service the two new clients as well as its existing customer base. This represents the second phase of a new £5.5mn investment by IOS in the region. Late last year IOS announced that it had purchased its previously leased 32-acre site at the former Longside airfield for £2.5mn. The company retains a 15-year option to lease additional sites at Longside, with potential to extend its facility to 100 acres. Following the granting of planning permission at the end of last year to create an additional 35 acres of storage, work has now begun on the construction of new warehousing, an inspection facility and a machine shop. The expansion will create around 20 additional jobs with the company, which has already doubled its workforce in recent years.

IOS managing director Glynn Geddie

at Odfjell Well Services, said, “We awarded this contract to IOS because the size of the facility and the range of equipment they have available enables quick and efficient loading and offloading, which allows us to meet our very tight deadlines and deliver a reliable service to our growing client base.” Also included in the expansion is a new machine shop and an additional 2,000m 2 of warehousing, which will add to IOS’s existing indoor storage capacity of 4,000m 2 . Glynn Geddie, managing director at

IOS, commented, “We are delighted to have won these two important new contracts. We have already made major investments in our Longside site to ensure that we provide a first-class service in a state-of-the-art facility for our customers. Our expansion will significantly increase our capacity to meet the operational requirement of all our clients. “We chose the site at Longside because of its prime location only four miles from the quayside at Peterhead. The proximity to the port provides a very competitive alternative through reduced transport and fleet costs for oil and gas operators and service companies who berth at Peterhead’s deep water quays.” IOS opened its Longside base when the company was set up in 2014. It incorporates both hard-standing outdoor storage and internal warehouse storage. Services include OCTG, drill pipe and offshore inspection, equipment rental, transportation and tubular management. The establishment of Victaulic’s new facility doesn’t simply continue the company’s 40-year tradition of commitment to growth here in the Commonwealth – it will also create jobs and help develop the Lehigh Valley’s manufacturing workforce.” In addition to housing the company’s current light assembly operation, which has been conducted in partnership with Cast-Pac Inc for 20 years, the new facilitywill include several million dollars’ worth of new equipment to modernise its manufacturing operations.

Victaulic, a manufacturer of mechani- cal pipe joining solutions, has unveiled plans to build an additional manufac- turing centre in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, USA. The facility is the result of increased domestic demand for the company’s products. It is expected to break ground later this year and be fully operational in 2019. “This new facility will play an important role in meeting increased customer demand, while also producing the highest quality products in the industry – something our customers have come to expect from us since our first innovation nearly 100 years ago,” said John F Malloy, CEO of Victaulic. “Amajor aspect of our business strategy has always been to manufacture products in close proximity to our cus- tomers.
