Setting a new benchmark for welder safety The Gamma product range of products for the personal protection of welders is now available from Kemppi safety products dealers. Offering protection for the eyes, face and respiratory system, Gamma also integrates work lights for clear vision and safety in low- light working conditions. This reduces work fatigue, increases comfort and protects from welding-related health hazards. “However, it is important to remember that hazard- ous materials only present a health hazard when they come into contact with your body,” said John Frost, product manager for personal protection equipment at Kemppi Oy. “Our new

and gouging, as well as in grinding and inspection work. Powered from either a battery-powered filter pack or airline breathing source, the Gamma GTH3 welder’s respirators work on the ‘positive air pressure’ principle. This means that positive air pressure excludes dangerous welding fumes, supplying clean and fresh breathing air into the breathing zone, making it safe, cool and comfortable throughout the working day. Meeting the highest filtration perfor- mance for respiratory protection, the belt-mounted, battery-powered PFU 210e filter pack offers freedom of movement around the worksite, and the supplied air models can be con- nected to a breathing air system meet- ing the local breathing air standards. Gamma is said to provide excellent optical quality and large view areas. LiFE+ Color auto-darkening welding filter technology enables greater clarity of vision, while lifting the welding visor reveals a 198cm 2 clear impact- protection shield. These combined features improve work accuracy, increase safety, reduce eye strain and lower work-based fatigue. Gamma helmets featuring auto- darkening welding filters (ADF) include the ‘Remote-RC’ feature, allowing easy adjustment of the ADF while wearing the helmet. own level in terms of overall protection. When used together with the new powered filter unit, Gamma meets the highest European total inward leakage (TIL) classification for respiratory performance, class TH3. This means that it protects users from 99.8 per cent of airborne fumes and particulate.” Gamma products are designed by welding professionals. Model options range from standard face and eye protection to advanced high-class respiratory solutions, including a model with integrated LED work-lights. The equipment can be used in all arc-based processes, including welding, cutting

Health hazards in welding workshops are a concern for both employers and employees. Intense light and heat from the welding and cutting arcs are obvious known hazards, but less acknowledged is the contamination of the surrounding breathing air. Welding and cutting fumes are composed of elements dangerous to human health and are not necessarily visible to the naked eye. Welders can typically breathe 4,000 litres of air per eight-hour work shift, and if the respiratory system is unprotected, the contaminated air presents serious health risks, through both long- and short-term exposure.
