Offshore project benefits from valve innovation Valve engineering specialist Severn Glocon Group is supplying 17 high- performance triple offset butterfly valves on an offshore gas compression platform located off Trinidad and Tobago.

Two free guides detailing the steps for electrofusing joints and couplings for HDPE pipelines have been published by the Municipal Advisory Board (MAB). The guides, ‘MAB Generic Electrofusion Procedure for Field Joining of 12" and Small Polyethylene (PE) Pipe’ and ‘MAB Generic Electrofusion Procedure for Field Joining of 14" to 30" Polyethylene (PE) Pipe’, are available for download from the Plastics Pipe Institute Inc (PPI) website. Camille George Rubeiz, co-chair, Municipal Advisory Board and senior director of engineering, Municipal and Industrial Division of PPI, said: “These MAB publications are extremely important for the owners and installers. “The sections on pipe preparation, while simple, are among the most important steps to follow when electrofusing pipe sections with The new valve technology is needed to control seawater in the fire safety system and is addressing extreme technical demands associated with a critical safety system. According to Severn, increased risk of galvanic corrosion in seawater applications is an ongoing concern for offshore operators, and avoiding contact between graphite components and the line media without compromising fire safety credentials or overall valve performance presented a significant technical challenge. Simon Walker, Severn’s technical authority – butterfly valves, led the development process. He said applying a logical, methodical approach helped

user specification required avoidance of wetted graphite inside the valves. To address this, the engineering team devised an innovative adaptation of Severn’s patented Oblique Cone Technology (OCT ® ). Introducing a hybrid valve seal eradicated the need for graphite, whilst retaining all the inherent advantages of a triple offset valve.

resolve the application problems: “Standard, catalogue valve products couldn’t satisfy the specification for these valves, so we were enlisted to solve the issue for our client. However, there is also an enduring industry need to overcome the galvanic corrosion problem.” The bi-directional isolation valves needed to achieve repeatable zero leakage and meet stringent fire safety testing standards. coupling or adding a tapping tee, service saddle, branch saddle, flex restraint or other fitting. The HDPE fused joints create leak-free, self- restraint, monolithic piping systems. Also, the fused joints will eliminate infiltration into the pipe as well as exfiltration into the environment.” Both documents provide the proper procedures, equipment, installers’ training, testing, inspection and qualification for electrofusing HDPE pipe.
