Globe valves are used for pressure and flow regulation as well as shut off. The tyre-actuated globe valve is particularly beneficial to cryogenic transport trailers, as its rubber actuator weighs significantly less than stainless steel linear actuators. The valve features a longer, stronger spring to assure a robust seal on closure – an essential safety consideration. Remote control allows emergency operation; the valve can also be integrated into an automated system, or installed in inaccessible locations. Manual override is provided to perform an

International agents from 25 countries meet at Schroeder Valves HQ The German manufacturer Schroeder Valves recently hosted a meeting of its 40 international sales partners. The agents came from a total of 25 countries – from A for Australia to U for the USA – to the headquarters of Schroeder Valves in the picturesque countryside east of Cologne, Germany. Since the company generates more than 70 per cent of its sales abroad, it used the four-day presence of its international sales representatives to thank them for their commitment and to deepen their expertise as well as to bond as a team. “It is important to us that our colleagues from Chile, India or South Korea get to know each other personally and can exchange ideas with their colleagues from Egypt, Turkey or Canada,” explained head of sales Martin Treibel. They had plenty of opportunity to do so at various joint meals and in several workshops on strategic and sales related topics. The summer party was attended not only by the international agents, but also by the local employees and their families. They enjoyed the good food and the performance of the Cologne rock band Dave Zwieback. Singer Eddie Leo Schruff even got the Americans and Italians to sing a few lines in Kölsch, the dialect spoken in Cologne.

Forty sales partners from all over the world came to the headquarters of Schroeder Valves in Germany

On Sunday, the agents were bused to Oberhausen, where they put their tee-off skills to the test on the Topgolf course – a sweaty affair in the high summer temperatures. In the evening, they replenished their fluids with a locally brewed beer. The next day, everyone returned to their five different continents. Schroeder Valves are specialists for pump protection valves. For more than 70 years, the company has been offering its customers high levels of precision technology. Civils Store brings StormTech into stock to help customers meet sustainable drainage deadline

Combining arch-shaped chambers with an innovative, integrated water quality treatment system, StormTech has been used successfully in over 50,000 projects worldwide employing in excess of three million units. Featuring a range of chamber sizes and its unique isolator row, providing ‘first flush’ cleansing and treatment of storm water run-off, StormTech is especially suited to applications requiring minimum cover, installation under trafficked areas and fast construction. As units are stackable, minimal space is required for storage and transport. StormTech fully complies with the recently updated design and construction guidance for foul and surface water sewers, meaning that water companies in England can accept StormTech when offered for adoption by developers under Section 104 Agreements in accordance with the Water Industry Act 1991. Additionally, structural modelling to Eurocodes has demonstrated that StormTech SuDS attenuation chambers can be installed to the minimum and maximum cover depths detailed within the standard ADS installation guidelines, originally based on US standards. Kevin Hancock, Civils Store managing director, said: “We have enjoyed great success with StormTech on a buy to-order basis, and with the huge increase in interest in StormTech and with Schedule 3 just round the corner, it makes perfect sense for us to bring StormTech into stock at our depots. Our first shipment is to Kent in the UK, then into Somerset, with other branches to follow.” Advanced Drainage Systems www.adspipe.co.uk

Groundworks and drainage supply specialist Civils Store is the latest infrastructure materials distributor to register interest in StormTech, the stormwater management system from Advanced Drainage Systems Inc (ADS). With Schedule 3 of the Flood & Water Management Act 2010, requiring developers to seek adoption of all their sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), expected to be implemented next year, the importance and accessibility of effective stormwater storage and attenuation systems is only set to increase. Precise on-site gas analyser from WITT

TechnipFMC wins gas development contract TechnipFMC has been awarded a significant integrated engineering, procurement, construction and installation (iEPCI™) contract by OMV (Norge) AS for its Berling gas development project. It will be OMV’s first iEPCI™ project in Norway as operator. TechnipFMC will design and install the subsea production systems, controls, pipelines and umbilicals for the development on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The award follows a six-month integrated front end engineering and design (iFEED™) study, which optimised the field layout and improved the project’s economics by confirming the suitability of thermally insulated pipe-in-pipe technology for the flowline used in this tieback. TechnipFMC www.technipfmc.com Thanks to its compact dimensions, low weight and integrated handle, the new MFA 10.0 with its robust stainless steel housing can be used as a mobile unit. However, it is also suitable as a stationary unit for continuous monitoring of gas mixtures. An RJ45 network connection, an analogue output and three potential-free relay contacts are available for signal transmission. The input pressure may be in the range of 1.5 to 10 barg, the temperature range in the range of -5°C to 50°C. 100 to 230V are required for operation. WITT www.wittgas.com THE new MFA 10.0 from WITT is a multi-gas analyser that can determine the composition of 15 different gas mixtures precisely and rapidly. This makes the compact, lightweight device ideal for on-site service purposes, although it can also be used for continuous analysis. The MFA 10.0 analyses various two-gas mixtures of argon, helium, carbon dioxide, methane, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. The reading is carried out in a matter of seconds, applying the thermal conductivity measurement principle. The advantage of this technology is that the measuring cell enjoys a long service life. The new WITT analyser is particularly user-friendly. It is operated via a 7" touch screen with password protection. Gas combinations can be selected and alarm limits defined quite intuitively. If the limits are exceeded, an acoustic and/ or visual alarm is triggered, and (where specified) an alarm acknowledgement requirement. All measurements can be viewed and exported via the measurement history function. Unlike competitor devices, the MFA 10.0 does not have to be recalibrated when the gas combination is changed. This simplifies handling and saves valuable working time.

Mitigating the potential risks of low quality products with steel pipe certifications By Greg Maurer, director of technical services and quality assurance, Wheatland Tube and Western Tube, Zekelman Industries

What could go wrong? The range of what could go wrong spans from the presence of rust to threading challenges to catastrophic failure of the pipe a few years from now. A common scenario is that the lower-quality pipe is installed, the rest of the building is constructed, and then the problem is discovered in final testing and walk throughs. Now, a contractor doesn’t just have to replace the pipe, but they must rip out walls, floors, or ceilings to get to the faulty material. In this situation, the “cheaper alternative” has now cost thousands of dollars in repairs, replacements and delays. The project will not finish on time, and the contractor’s reputation is damaged. And yet, even that last scenario is better than one in which the faulty pipe is carrying natural gas or is part of a fire sprinkler system, where any sort of performance malfunction could be a life safety issue. It’s a concerning scenario, and one that should be avoided at all costs. You simply can’t take someone’s word when it comes to the health and safety of customers, employees or the surrounding community. Certifications that mean more Instead of relying on someone’s claim that their pipe meets the standards, contractors should seek out pipe that meets certification requirements that are verified by a third party. Some of the more common certifications are: • API – American Petroleum Institute . API certified pipe is used in petrochemical applications. It is the most stringent manufacturing certification process. • NSF – National Sanitation Foundation . NSF-61 is for materials or products that come into contact with drinking water. • UL ® and FM – Underwriters Laboratories and Factory Mutual . These organisations evaluate the components in a fire protection system. • UPC – Uniform Plumbing Code . This code governs the installation and inspection of plumbing systems as a means of promoting the public’s health, safety and welfare. This is not a requirement for steel pipes.

With the influx of steel pipes being imported from around the world, contractors have never had more choices than they do today. With mounting pressure to get a job done for less, some contractors are opting for a quick fix that may save them a few dollars. Besides, the pipes are often hidden behind walls and ceilings, so it’s not as if anyone is going to see a difference, right? And contractors are told they meet ASTM standards, so what could go wrong? Understanding ASTM standards ASTM is a wonderful organisation that develops standards that enhance the performance of products we use every day. In the steel pipe world, the A53 standard is the one that manufacturers strive to meet throughout their entire process. ASTM A53 specifies the steel must be open-hearth, basic oxygen or electric-furnace processed, and recommends the tests that should be performed to ensure the steel pipe adheres to the standard. Many contractors are not aware that compliance with ASTM standards relies solely on self-certification processes by various manufacturers from around the world. There is no ASTM representative that visits the factory and observes the processes to ensure the standard is being met. As such, when someone offers an inexpensive pipe that they claim is ASTM approved, the only way to truly verify it is for the distributor or your team to perform all the necessary tests. A contractor may even find themselves wondering how consistent the pipe’s performance will be from pipe to pipe and over time after the installation is complete. Contractors face various challenges when managing construction projects, from weather delays to staffing issues. While many of these challenges may be unavoidable, some contractors are taking unnecessary risks by selecting lower-quality steel pipes and tubes. This article highlights the potential dangers of these choices and emphasises the importance of certified pipe solutions.

Wheatland’s SureThread, contractor preferred standard pipe

• A53 Grades A and B – Grade A pipe has lower yield and tensile strength, making it a bit softer and more malleable. Grade B has higher yield and tensile strength and is required for many governmental applications. Grade B, in addition to the higher mechanical properties, has some additional testing requirements that must be met versus Grade A. One pipe for many applications Contractors and distributors may look at the above list and worry about the amount of pipe they might need to have in stock, but the good news is that problem has been solved as well. With recent manufacturing advancements, contractors can now get SureThread™ Standard Pipe from Wheatland Tube, which is ASTM A53, Type F, Grade B continuous weld (CW) pipe ranging from half-inch to four-inch that meets all these standards: Uniform Plumbing Code, UL ® and C-UL Listed, FM Approved and NSF-61. Contractors have enough to worry about. Adding unnecessary risks on top of everything else just to save a few dollars is not worth it. Don’t jeopardise your business or the lives of others – seek out third-party certified pipe for your next project and rest comfortably knowing that it will be a job well done.
