Loop hanger and tube garden take the prizes
Valerie Geyer and Laura Göttsch, students at Hanover Technical University, Germany, won the ‘polyvanced Design und Media Award 2010’ in January. The ‘loop hanger’ was their contribution to the issue of what tubing can add to interior architecture. A total of 30 ideas were submitted. Originality, suitability for implementation and the design quality of the objects were the winning criteria on which the jury made their decision. In addition to cash prizes the winners will also share in profits generated by their ideas. “We were fired with enthusiasm when we saw the sheer quality of the ideas that poured in,” commented Dr Robert Mayr, CEO of polyvanced. “Many of them explore creative new uses and applications for the flexibility and individuality of tubing.” Valerie Geyer, 21, of Nuremberg and 20 year old Laura Göttsch from Hamburg hatched the winning idea in their loop hanger: a tube, loop and hanger rolled into one. The object consists of a wood frame construction with insertion holes and tubing fixtures. This provides the possibility for hanging, wrapping, placing or inserting objects of various kinds. “This construction is simple, practical, it can be used on an individual basis and it looks interesting,” commented Dr Mayr.

The polyvanced Design und Media Award demonstrated how versatile tubing can be with applications ranging from construction elements for use in interior architecture to decorative accessories. Pia Luise Gattke and Abija Holtkamp took second place with their tube garden design element, which transforms a corrugated tube into a house plant. The designs ‘my brain’ by Dschulietta Zeray and ‘knit a tube’ by Katharina Stünkel shared third place. Ms Stünkel created a multi-functional element as a giant piece of knitwear.
