construction, rail, energy, agriculture and manufacturing industries. Factors such as the impact of the pandemic, poor economic growth and high input costs continue to have a significant impact on the performance of the metal fasteners manufacturing and wholesale industry. The imposition of safeguard duties on imports of various types of metal fasteners in recent years has increased demand for locally manufactured fasteners, according to the industry. During 2020 and 2021, safeguard duties were imposed on imported iron or steel bolts with hexagon heads and fully threaded screws with hexagon heads. As countries begin to recover from the impact of the pandemic, demand for fasteners is growing in most industries, but there are problems on the supply side. Steel plants have been slow to come back online, causing a global deficit that led to ongoing higher steel prices. As

Marine fasteners and fixings Leyton Fasteners, based in Cheshire, UK, offers a range of marine fasteners and fixings, including A4-316 marine grade stainless steel fasteners suitable for general use in marine structural applications, andgradeA2–304 for internal marine applications. The company states that it understands the importance of having fixings that are highly resistant to corrosion above and below the waterline. Customers may also call in to the trade counter to place an order or collect in person. The standard A4–316 stainless steel alloy that Leyton Fasteners offers in its marine fasteners has been specifically manufactured so that it will not rust when exposed to harsh environments such as the ocean.

of electrolyte saltwater. The best way to avoid this is to match stainless steel components, which will “literally last a lifetime”, according to Leyton Fasteners. The range of marine products includes fasteners and fixings, chain, wire rope, hinges, pins and rings. In addition to the standard off-the-shelf range, Leyton Fasteners offers a bespoke service to supply almost any fastener or fixing (or other part, if possible) to the customer’s specification, in a large variety of specialist materials specifically available for marine and offshore applications. These items can be produced to customer drawings using any material specification available from an extensive range of alloys, brass, composites, etc. Leyton Fasteners https://leytonfasteners.co.uk

Stainless steel bolts, screws and nuts provide long-term corrosion resistance. For above the water line, grade A2–304 is sufficient, but anything that is to be submerged will require at least 6 per cent molybdenum in the alloy: A4-316. The company recommends not coupling stainless steel marine fasteners with aluminium, because a galvanic corrosion process starts when stainless steel is in contact with aluminium in the presence

The team has many years of expertise and experience in the world of fasteners, covering marine, engineering and associated industries, and has access to an extensive range of contacts, resources, suppliers and manufacturers to ensure that it supplies quality products. Alcomex expands product range with flat strip springs Coil springs, such as clock springs, constant force springs and power springs, are made using flat tape – most often rolled carbon steel or high-strength stainless steel. They are used in applications including spring hinges, self-retracting devices, seat belts, fall arresters, seat tippers, cable retractors and timers. The construction of the different types of coil spring is visually similar, but the springs are fundamentally different in terms of functionality and application. Clock springs with space between the individual turns work without any contact between the threads. The developed force increases during winding and decreases during unwinding. Often the working range is only within one coil turn. Conversely, constant force springs and power springs are tightly wound on each other and the force is created by partial or complete unrolling.

Few companies can produce these springs. Not only is the production itself demanding, but the manufacturer must also have strong technical know-how and the ability to provide the customer with the necessary technical support, often starting at an early stage of development. This support can go beyond the production of the coil spring: part of the development, production and delivery is the assembly into the various types of housing in which the springs are located. One of Alcomex Springs’ new production plants focuses on the production of these flat coil springs. The production technologies are complemented by a large R&D team, and the logistics capabilities within the Lesjöfors group allow the springs to be delivered worldwide. Fastener coatings for global infrastructure boom

With the Infrastructure and Jobs Act becoming law late last year, the USA is set to invest $1.2 trillion to upgrade roads, bridges, railways and airports. Other countries may follow suit, heralding a global infrastructure boom. This massive investment in infrastructure, combined with a construction industry experiencing a post-Covid rebound, is creating high demand for fasteners built for longevity. PPG is a single-source provider of complete fastener solutions – pre-treatment, electro-coat, liquid and powder coatings – that are engineered to optimise fastener reliability, efficiency and lasting performance. For installations on land or at sea, PPG coatings are formulated with technologies designed to prevent corrosion and chemical attack, even in the toughest conditions. The company’s fastener coatings offer a range of benefits that include an extensive colour palette for easy identification, RoHS- and REACH-compliant protection from abrasion and impact through to load resistance and low friction for torque tension and release. PPG products such as Xylan® 1000 and Electropolyseal® Electrocoat ensure the performance and durability of fasteners in a wide range of applications and environments, and are backed by PPG’s support and technical service. Xylan 1000 is a solvent-borne, resin-bonded, high-temperature resistant dry filmformulated todeliver awide range of performance characteristics when used in multiple industrial applications. Electropolyseal Electrocoat is designed specifically for bulk applications, offering corrosion protection, adhesion and precise torque control in a range of performance options. New concealed fastener clip for building facades Metl-Span is expanding its range of clips for concealed fasteners with the introduction of the patent-pending V6 X-Span Clip. Providing an alternative to back fastening, the V6 X-Span Clip allows crews to install longer spans without the need to access the interior of the panel, for a more efficient installation and a stronger panel. The V-shaped fastener is designed to fit the joinery of Metl-Span CF insulated metal panels to increase the stiffness of the panel and better distribute the shear load at fastening locations. This distribution helps to delay panel disengagement under negative loads – a failure point of thicker panels at longer spans. “The V6 X-Span Clip introduces material, labour and time savings for installation crews for long span building envelopes utilising Metl-Span insulated metal panels,” said Jennifer Franz, product manager at Metl-Span. “This clip advances efficient design to better serve the industry and delivers greater long-term durability.” The clip can be combined with face-to-clip fasteners at end supports to further delay disengagement and allow for larger negative wind loads or longer spans.

The same clip and face-to-clip fastener are used regardless of panel thickness, minimising the number and variability of components. The V6 X-Span Clip is also reversible, with holes at the ends of the clip and at the centre for intermediate supports, removing the need for two different clips to be used at different areas or for the field-drilling of holes in the clip.
