A constant buzz at busy exhibition stands Lesjöfors, a frequent exhibitor at trade shows, has reported that the Scandinavian industrial event Elmia Subcontractor and Valve World Expo in Düsseldorf, Germany, in mid-November were both very successful. The company states that meeting customers and partners in person and discussing challenges and opportunities is an important key to the group’s success. To listen to the industry’s top topics helps to understand where the market is heading, so exhibiting at trade shows is something the Lesjöfors companies do on a regular basis. The Elmia Subcontractor trade show – an annual event held in Jönköping, Sweden – continues to be the largest marketing activity within the whole Lesjöfors group. At the latest show, four themes were in focus: smart industry, sustainability, competence and collaboration. Anna Haesert, the group’s sustainability manager, gave a talk on how Lesjöfors is accelerating its sustainability work. Henrik Berner, business development manager and Lesjöfors’ coordinator for Elmia Subcontractor, commented, “Elmia Subcontractor is a very important arena for the Nordic subcontractor industry – the place to demonstrate new springs and pressings, discuss solutions and the obvious hub to meet potentially new customers. Several long-term customer relationships have their origin at Elmia over the years. One of the major cases we could bring back home for further discussions this year is a multi-million case if we can find a partnership.” The exhibiting teams at Elmia and Valve World considered both shows very successful. Experienced staff from several Lesjöfors companies at both shows invited visitors to experience a wide range of spring knowledge, including products from specialised companies within the group.

Marine-grade 316 stainless steel fasteners for corrosive environments

Mr Lehmann added, “Most people assume that all stainless screws are the same – it’s a common misconception. But stainless steel is not impervious to corrosion. It can still stain and rust just like iron, given the right environment, like in or near water, especially salt water. There are different grades of steel depending on the metals used in the alloy. 316 stainless steel fasteners are harder to find – ‘big box’ stores usually carry the corrosion prone 304 stainless, also known as 18 8. Fair Wind Fasteners only carries 316 stainless when it comes to stainless steel, again, because it’s a high-quality product and it’s the only grade of stainless that I’d be comfortable with on my own boat.” Officially established in 2020, Fair Wind Fasteners got its start back in 2010, when Robert Lehmann needed a few screws to help repair his vintage wooden boat. After a lot of stripped silicon bronze screws, Mr Lehmann learnt that cheaper is not always better. In Newport, Rhode Island, USA, he opened a shop and built a reputation for silicon bronze fasteners.

Fair Wind Fasteners has added marine- grade 316 stainless steel fasteners to its growing boat-repair inventory. Curated by owner and career seaman Robert Lehmann, Fair Wind Fasteners carries a corrosion-resistant range that includes nuts, bolts, wood screws, machine screws, carriage bolts, hex bolts, lag bolts, washers, nails and wood plugs. All Fair Wind fasteners are available directly from the company’s website in the exact quantities needed, with discounts for buying in bulk. “We started up just two years ago, but we’re growing fast and already well known for our high-quality silicon bronze fasteners,” said Mr Lehmann. “I started the business after recognising a need in the industry for high quality silicon bronze fasteners, and I personally checked tolerances, had alloy testing done and visited manufacturers before even considering putting them on my shelf. Living and working here in Newport, the ‘sailing capital of the world’ and home to many fine boat builders, it’s important to me that I only sell fasteners I would personally use on my own boat.”

Corundum thin film coating technology for 30 years of life for fasteners and metal hardware as per ISO10683/ASTMF3393: up to 6,000 hours SST

By Kalyan Dhakane, Effco Finishes & Technologies Pvt Ltd Co-author PP Deshpande, Dept of Metallurgy and Material Science, College of Engineering, University of Pune, India

Corrosion performance of the coated samples was assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy over a frequency range of 100 kHz to 0.1 Hz using amplitude signal 10 mV rms (ASTM G106 and ASTM 2005b). For all of the electrochemical experiments, 3.5 wt % NaCl aqueous solution was used. All measurements were carried out five times to obtain good reproducibility of the results, and these results are reported in this work. Results and discussion Scanning electron microscopic images and XRD of the 0.5mm, 1mm and 1.5 2mm cut sectioned Ecomet corundum samples are shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 , respectively.

Ecomet corundum-coated bolts having 0.5mm and 1mm cuts in the coating do not show sign of corrosion, even in the scratch. The Ecomet corundum-coated bolt having a 1.5 to 2mm cut shows rusting in the cut section within one to two days after the scratch is made in the coating. At the cut edges, zinc corrodes preferentially, providing sacrificial protection to the base steel. The resulting product then fills the cavities in the coating and inhibits further corrosion. However, as the size of cut gets increased beyond critical value, there is reduction in Zn content in the surface layer of the scratched portion of the coating. This leads to the corrosion in the scratched region.

Introduction Low-carbon steels corrode in most atmospheric environments when the relative humidity exceeds 60 per cent. Effective coatings used to prevent corrosion contain environmentally hazardous pigments. Effco Finishes and Technologies Pvt Ltd (Pune, India) introduced a non-toxic and environmentally friendly paint formulation under the trade name Ecomet corundum. It is found that the Ecomet corundum-painted bolts having 0.5 and 1mm scratches do not corrode, whereas a bolt having a 1.5mm scratch corrodes within one to two days after the scratch is made. The aim of these investigations is to find out reasons of corrosion in the scratched region of the coated steel bolt.

Ecomet corundum + Ecomet Top Clear sol gel technology coated, with five times torqueing test as per ISO16047, followed by SST as per ASTM117 for 1,200 hours. No metal rust observed

Experimental characterisation Scanning electron microscopy using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM, Sigma IV Carl Zeiss UK) was conducted at 3,000 X to examine the morphology of the coating. X-ray diffraction (Bruker AXS DS Advance, Germany) was carried out to study the composition of the compound formation at the scratch. Corrosion studies A corrosion cell having three-electrode geometry of coated steel bolt as working electrode, platinum as counter electrode and saturated calomel electrode (SCE; pH Products, Hyderabad, India) as a reference electrode was used. The cell related to Gamry reference system 1000 (Wilmington, USA) for electrochemical measurements.

Electro chemical investigations

Corrosion protection mechanism It is suggested that corundum coating functions by three mechanisms – barrier protection, galvanic protection and the formation of corrosion-inhibiting products. The coating, being barrier, precludes water and oxygen from reaching the metal substrate. Al-oxide imparts dielectric properties to the coating, opposes the passage of corrosive species and improves the barrier action. The barrier mechanism is effective as long as the coating is intact. When the scratch is made, at the cut edges, zinc corrodes preferentially providing sacrificial protection to the steel. The resulting product then fills the cavities in the coating and inhibits further corrosion. As the exchange current density of zinc dissolution (10-7A/cm 2 ) is lower than that of the steel (10-6A/cm 2 ), it begins to corrode first in the case of the damage of the coating, and it corrodes more slowly than the steel, thereby protecting the steel for a longer period. This is the basis of galvanic protection of steel. It should be noted that Zn is sufficient in the surface layer on the bolt to provide electrical contact up to a certain scratch size only. As the scratch size increases beyond the critical value, Zn is not adequate to impart sacrificial protection to the base steel ( Table 3 ). The underlying steel gets exposed due to the increased scratch size. Since Al is in oxide form, it works as a cathode with respect to the steel. Hence, steel begins to corrode and thereby leads to the formation of iron oxide, ie red rust. Coating thickness should be increased to impart corrosion protection to the bolt if the scratch size is 1.5 to 2mm.

Table 4 the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic investigations just after immersion and open circuit potential measurements in 3.5 % NaCl. Table 4 reveals a decrease in impedance values of the coating with the increase in the size of the cut section. This points out the corrosion tendency of the coated bolt as a function of scratch size. Negative shift in open circuit potential confirms cathodic protection of the bolt steel. contains results of
