Playing a VERY large part Swedish company Bumax is playing its part in the construction of the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), which will be the world’s largest telescope when it goes into operation in 2024. The company is providing more than 11,000 Bumax 109 fasteners for the project, which is based in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. The ELT is a reflector telescope, collecting universal light using a massive curved mirror, which is 39m across – three times the area of the next largest telescope. The mirror cannot be made from a single piece of glass and will consist of 798 individual hexagonal segments, each measuring 1.4m across and driven by electrical motors for fine tuning. The Bumax fasteners are being used to fix the mirrors to the segment supports. Twelve 10mm-long Bumax 109 M6 bolts will be used on each of the 798 segments, as well as on an additional 133 segments for a continuous swapping process to allow the mirrors to be cleaned and coated while the ELT remains operational.
