TAIWAN MANUFACTURERS OFWIRE INDUSTRY

Taiwan full support toward smart metalworking manufacture

Over the past 10 years, with the joint efforts of government and industry, Taiwan’s metalworking industry has earned a place in international markets through outstanding manufacturing quality and performance. Taiwan’s machinery manufacturers continue to express the spirit of “High- tech, precision, innovation, global service, advancement and flexibility” in international markets. In these uncertain times of the global pandemic, Taiwan’s manufacturers are demonstrating that they can adapt to this challenging new environment, while still delivering efficient solutions that incorporate the latest technologies. Current status of Taiwan’s metalworking Imports/Exports Taiwan’s total machinery and equipment exports in September 2020 amounted to US$30.71 billion, an increase of US$2.63 billion or 9.4% from the same month of the previous year. The cumulative total export value from January to September was US$248.09 billion, an increase of US$5.93 billion or 2.4% from the same

period last year. Machinery exports in September were US$2.1 billion, an increase of 0.8% from US$2.084 billion in September last year. The export value of machinery from January to September was US$18.74 billion, a decrease of 8.0% from the same period last year. The top three machinery export values from January to September were: inspection and measurement equipment (US$2.667 billion/14.2%/9.3%year-on-yeargrowth), electronic equipment (US$ 2.485 billion/13.3% (Growing 3.9% over the same period last year), and machine tools (US$1.584 billion/account for 8.5%/ decrease 32.4% from the same period last year). The top 3 machinery export destinations from January to September were China (US$5.530 billion/29.5%), the United States (US$4.156 billion/22.2%), and Japan (US$1.303 billion/7.0%). Affected by the US-China trade conflict and the epidemic, Taiwan’s overall machinery exports for single months in 2020 have declined for six consecutive months since March (compared to the same period last year), and finally showed positive growth in September, showing that Taiwan’s machinery industry is recovering signs of export value; a number of sub-industries in the top 10 export value have double-

digit growth, including: inspection and measurement equipment (+27%), power transmission parts (+14.2%), power hand tools (+12.8%) and woodworking machines (+24/7%). Machine tools (-36.9%) still maintain a decline of about 30%. The exchange rate is still the key to the competitiveness of machinery exports; although machinery exports in September increased by 0.8% in US dollars, they fell by 5% in New Taiwan dollars.
