Second route for South Pacific

OPT-NC of New Caledonia (Office des Postes et Télécommunications de Nouvelle-Calédonie) has selected Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to build and deploy its second submarine cable. ASN will work with Orange Marine and Axians. Orange Marine will be responsible for the deep-sea survey and submarine cable installation, while Axians’ work will include environmental studies, shallow water surveys and land cable pulling.

The new system, complementing the existing Gondwana cable between Noumea in New Caledonia and Sydney, Australia, is designed to avoid service interruption or Internet disruption by securing New Caledonia’s international and domestic communications. ASN’s design ensures resilience in case of an outage by introducing route diversity, together with the greater reliability provided by a new domestic loop.

The international section of the system will be deployed between New Caledonia and Fiji. The connection to Fiji will enable New Caledonia’s integration into a meshed regional network with direct access to other countries in the region: Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, Wallis and Futuna, the USA (Hawaii) and Australia.
