PWM: pioneer in cold-weld technology

WintWire acquires key customer and £1m tool room WintWire Ltd, a leading speciality wire manufacturer based in Sheffield, UK, has acquired one of its key customers in a deal that will secure its continued growth in the profile wire market. WintWire, which can trace its history back more than 150 years, has experienced huge growth in recent years due to rising demands for its round and profile wires in stainless steel, nickel alloys, and non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Managing director Ben Turner said: “Our high quality wires are in demand worldwide and our ability to manufacture these quickly to exact customer specifications is helping us to grow year on year.” The acquisition will see WintWire install four new rolling lines, which will produce the 850-strong catalogue of patterned wire for the global silverware market. These patterned wires will be available in all malleable metals, including brass, copper, silver and gold. WintWire Ltd – UK Website : www.wintwire.co.uk

The ST40 cold welder from PWM

PWM Ltd, based in Kent, UK, has been at the forefront of cold welding technology for more than three decades, designing and manufacturing high-performance cold welding machines and dies, and is a global supplier to the international wire and cable industry. Cold pressure welding enables manufacturers to permanently join non-ferrous metals and their alloys without heat, fillers or fluxes. PWM’s cold welding technology produces consistent welds that are stronger than the parent material, helping manufacturers avoid downtime, save materials and improve productivity. Most non-ferrous metals can be cold welded, including alloys such as Aldrey, Constantan, 70/30 brass, zinc, silver and silver alloys, nickel and gold. Plated wires, such as tinned copper, sliver-plated and nickel-plated, can all be welded to themselves or to plain copper. PWM’s comprehensive selection of cold welding machines ranges from small handheld, manually operated welders for joining fine wire from 0.1mm diameter up to heavy-duty powered rod welders with capacities of up to 30mm diameter. All PWM products are clean, quiet and safe to operate, and the powered machines in the range are designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Even the largest model in PWM’s range, the P1500 rod welder for material from 15mm to 30mm, requires only a small electrical current to drive the hydraulic pump motor. PWM machines are also low-maintenance and easy to use, enabling even untrained operatives to produce consistent high-quality welds. Recent innovations from PWM include a cold welding machine designed specifically for joining non-ferrous strip. The ST40 can cold-weld material as wide as 45mm and as thin as 0.2mm, depending on the material properties. PWM makes cold welding dies and can also produce custom-made dies for round or profile wire and rod to suit customers’ requirements. All dies are precision-engineered in-house by the company’s engineers. It can also custom-make dies for welding two different sizes of wire or rod, enabling manufacturers to weld different wire sizes together quickly when changing reels. Customer service has always been a priority at PWM and it offers a personal technical advice and support service. PWM’s specialist staff have over 35 years’ experience of cold welding techniques and applications and are happy to advise customers and help them find the most cost-effective cold welding solution for their project. Thanks to its ongoing research and development programme, PWM is able to offer wire and cable manufacturers a wide range of technically advanced products. To explain the cold weld process and show the capability of the individual machines, PWM has developed a series of videos demonstrating the technique, available on its website. PWM’s worldwide network of experienced agents, supported by the UK team, provide fast on-site support with full back-up and after-sales service for all products.
