Capital connections In the UK, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a £10mn investment fund to upgrade large parts of the city from copper cable to full fibre by utilising the Tube transport network. The plans will see use of TfL’s tunnels to create a fibre backbone across London. The funding will cover the installation costs of linking the fibre optic cables to public buildings, such as community centres and libraries. The project is also set to reduce the cost of laying cables for providers. At present, around 90 per cent of London is served by fibre that only reaches local exchanges: most homes are still connected with copper cabling, with much lower speeds. Only 11 per cent of UK properties can order full fibre connections, compared with 70 per cent in Spain and Sweden. The cabling will form the foundation for 5G mobile connectivity, which requires a full fibre network. You can learn about ABZ’s product range when it exhibits at wire Düsseldorf on Stand 11 A41.
