Complete reporting and networking capabilities are included and customers often use a portable monitor and keyboard for setup and then allow the tester to run unmonitored. MAC’s experienced engineers can also provide solutions to applications such as testing Nitinol wire for cracks and inclusions. Nitinol, a shape memory alloy, is often used in critical surgical applications such as stents and heart valves, having the essential ability to be deformed at one temperature, then recover its original, un-deformed shape when it is heated above its transformation temperature after exposure to typical body temperatures of 98.6°F (37°C). Using a Multimac® eddy current instrument, with its phase sector output gate, and MAC’s Wiretester test coils for small-diameter applications, cracks and inclusions can be detected and separate counts for both conditions can be provided while rejecting only the wire with cracks. MAC can supply test coils as small as 0.013" inside diameter. Information on the 20mm Rotomac® eddy current rotary for detecting longitudinal seam-type defects in wire and bar between 2mm and 20mm diameter will also be available.

Capable of rotating at speeds up to 18,000rpm while testing, the Rotomac operates with MAC’s Multimac eddy current instrumentation to complete the system. For producers of black bar, MAC is introducing the Roto ux® AC ux leakage system. Designed to test hot rolled bar from 20 to 180mm in diameter, the new Roto ux AC is based on MAC Roto ux technology, incorporating the latest multiplexing and wireless signal transfer features to minimise noise while maximising sensitivity. The system detects longitudinal aws as small as 0.1mm deep on hot rolled bars and rods, and provides full quadrature detection to preserve phase selectability, and choice of all phase and chord gates, similar to a conventional eddy current tester. A new probe screen includes sensitivity and phase adjustment for each individual channel. Two surface ride probe arrays, consisting of eight elements, each cover 160mm per rotation. The system operates up to 900rpm, depending on product diameter, and throughput speed of 2.4m per minute (480rpm) with larger diameters requiring slower rpm.

The Minimac 55

Designed for ease of use and performance the Rotomac can be installed in-line with straighteners, or o -line in a separate test station. Applications include continuous wire lines such as drawing, spring making and parts forming, as well as straight and cut operations. Rotomac features include highly sensitive non-contact testing with improved distance compensation, a critical factor in testing ovate wire. A dial-in diameter guide operates with simple adjustment tools to adjust both probes simultaneously, to the desired diameter. Probes that are easily centred on the product centre of rotation, and quick twist-on bushing holders, add to the convenient operation of this rotary.
