Together with the high quality of the sheared surface, which is typical for the Coldmatic, this results in a cut-off quality that allows forming from the first station,” explained Mr Buehrer. The centrepiece of the Coldmatic is the newly designed transfer system, on which the grippers for the part transfer are mounted. All grippers are individually driven by servomotors, and can be individually opened and closed as well as programmed. “This programmability brings enormous advantages when it comes to changeover times. Instead of changing all the parameters manually, all previously saved settings can be applied in just a few seconds.”

By investing in technology, talent and engineering skills, in partnership with some of the world’s leading producers and institutions, Holton Crest has already seen success with many different machine configurations being installed all over the world. At wire 2018, Holton Crest will showcase these different machine configurations, along with its latest technology developments to demonstrate how the continuous rotary extrusion industry has progressed over the last two years. As a specialist in continuous rotary extrusion, Holton Crest currently offers three different extruders: HC1100, HC2200 and HC4000. With installations in Europe and North and South America, for both aluminium and copper processing (with some machines capable of transforming both metals), Holton Crest has delivered on major projects where reliability, productivity and efficiency are important. Managing director Malcolm Ladd said: “The fruits of our labours have been realised over the last two years, during which we have supplied multiples of five different configurations of our dual axis ‘next generation’ HC machines, including two large systems, several small ones, and one with particle feed. The recent configurations include one wire in one product out, one in two out, two in one out, and two in two out. The one in two out machine for aluminium in Europe we believe to be the largest single-machine CRE contract to date, which really demonstrates our capacity to deliver at the highest level, with many different applications.”

developing artificial intelligence, which will automatically try alternative settings when running the process in order to learn the optimum settings for a particular material. This makes the process up to 50 per cent more efficient, which could be game-changing for many of our customers.” This technology is not exclusively available on new machines – Holton Crest has also been working on a comprehensive future-proofing and modernisation programme of older machines. For example, by introducing digital controls and modernising certain components on a ten-year-old line, customers could see improvements in production processes by increasing functionality, productivity, efficiencies, coil quality and running speeds. This new range of TPU products will raise standards for the protection of wires and cables in an increasingly automated world, where the quality and reliability of connections is critical. Further details about the new products, which are targeted for use in automation, transportation, energy and consumer electronics applications, will be announced at the show. Huntsman is a long-standing partner to the global wire and cable industry and has a team of material experts working specifically in this sector. With a track record dating back decades, Huntsman has developed a comprehensive portfolio of Irogran® TPU grades that covers almost every imaginable cable jacketing application. Halogen-free, flame-retardant, and easy to colour and process, Huntsman’s specialist wire and cable Irogran TPU products can be used to make highly protective wire and cable covers with excellent physical properties and good haptics – meaning they feel pleasant to touch. ▲ New range of TPU products from Huntsman Huntsman Stand: 14G17

The new Hatebur Coldmatic CM 725

Because of the servomotors, the Coldmatic CM 725 uses fewer mechanical parts than previous machines, reducing the overall costs by almost 20 per cent. The fast changing system allows operators to lift out all seven punches and dies at once and exchange them with prepared units. All tools can be exchanged in only ten to 15 minutes. In addition to the Coldmatic CM 725, the Hatebur & Carlo Salvi booth will highlight the Carlo Salvi CS 001, which can be seen in operation. The CS 001 is designed for very thin wires from 0.6 to 3mm. With one die and two punches, it can form 660 parts per minute. The CS 001 needs minimal set-up time and is easy to change-over and to operate. It is suitable for the production of screw blanks and solid parts. Even small quantities, as low as 5,000 parts, are profitable due to the minimised set-up time. Holton machines have been in existence for over 30 years with some still going today, a testament to the build quality. However, Holton Crest is committed to continual improvement, specifically focused on the CRE process. The company has designed, built and put into production a new generation of machines with new technology and digital controls that open up new process improvements. Mr Ladd added: “A lot of our research has been put into the software, user interface and control system, which has enabled us to launch a new software and adaptive control system.
